DE: Music, none stop

[personal profile] death_gone_mad  asks:

I was wondering how other muns decided what their pup's musical preferences were. Especially if their pup is not modernish or not of this world at all.

I ask because I still have no idea what Amascut would listen to, despite the playlist I have compiled for her.

[Also, if you have any ideas for DEs, feel free to leave them here.]

Gordon is quietly fond of country music and will not admit it to anyone other than very close friends because whenever I travel for more than a few days I have a hard time adapting to most local radio stations- except the country ones. I have fond memories of some of the XM Satellite Radio country stations from my last visit to Seattle. Also, people like to make fun of country music and don't expect somebody like a theoretical physicist to take an interest in it even though it's the most popular style of music in the United States, so screw them, Gordon likes country.

Adrian likes Metallica, Motorhead (I can't type umlauts), and other similar metal. It's not that he doesn't like the prevailing style of music you hear on the radio in his part of West Virginia, it's that that's sort of... you know, just plain generic music to him. It's just there. I know a number of RL Marines who're fond of heavy metal, so it seemed reasonable enough that it might appeal to him demographically, and I picked a couple of bands he started off with based on what albums they had around the time his musical tastes would've been forming and the likelihood he might've had of running across one of their records.

Ellen has kind of a limited music selection thanks to her world's current condition but is very very fond of the classical violin played by Old Lady Agatha, the current owner of the last Stradivarius violin in the world and operator of one of two canonical radio stations in the Capital Wasteland. She's rather put off by the sound of electric guitar, as there isn't any in the recordings she's heard all her life, but she does like acoustic guitar- I've said that in her world Jimi Hendrix was known as James Hendrix, father of the classical guitar renaissance and (following his mid-life crisis) of a startling but revolutionary resurgence in jazz guitar.

Haven't really put much thought into the music the others would like or why they might like it.

Claudia has some overlap with my own musical tastes, per canon; apparently her preferred way of being taken down if she becomes a threat involves David Bowie. (In person, that is. All that's actually said about it is that Artie knows dhow to get hold of him. XD)
Also per canon, I think Claudia does know some newer stuff that I bypassed, but she leans toward harder rock than the pop stuff regardless.
(I threw in Andrew Bird, back when I gave her a psychic playlist during the Allpocalypse, because his... aesthetic? themes? wossname? Sweeney help me out here? ties into the show so well that I have four songs of his on my W13 playlist and I keep considering adding more.)

There's a scene in Alera where Tavi is around music, and really doesn't seem to care. He knows when something's just terrible, but he doesn't have strong feelings any which way. He'd probably go in for classical, though, and maybe some folk/traditional.

Lois likes Whitesnake. Also 80s hair metal in general. After that she has a predilection towards older or harder rock. Most of her friends and family think her musical taste is hilarious and highly questionable.

Hobbits are great lovers of music, as they are of all things that make life enjoyable, and sing and dance whenever possible. Howard Shore's interpretation is folk-music tinged, which works for me.

Music doesn't play a big part of life in the Merlin universe, so it's hard to say if any particular kind is more important to Merlin than any other. I imagine he'd like acoustic more than electric, since that's what he's used to.

Steve likes the music of his time. My headcanon is he's been exposed to a lot of different kinds from growing up in New York and from his travels around the country, so he can reference everything from Glenn Miller to Robert Johnson.

The History Boys is scored to 80s alternative with some standards thrown in, so that's what Stuart listens to.

I have an iPod Shuffle I listen to while I'm at work. As I go along, my headvoices will latch on to certain songs, and I develop a musical profile from there.

At the moment, the only one of my pups with well-defined musical tastes is Alyx. She's into Paul Simon, gospel, and the Rat Pack.

Canon helped to influence Mike and Raph's musical tastes. Raph is all about guitar rock and old school heavy metal.

Mike loves just about anything, but is particularly fond of music best described as "Stoned in a Field Jam Bands." Think Phish, Jimmy Buffet, Dave Matthews, and of course The Greatful Dead.

Aang likes all kinds of music, though mostly it's all kinds of music from his world. I have no doubt he'll quickly take to this jazz music the kids of Republic City like these days.

Splinter likes classical, big band, traditional Japanese music, and Elvis.

Ida is an MP3 player on shuffle, but her favorite tune is In the Mood.

The Rogue Loompas love classic rock.

Elle doesn't really have any music preferences. Sometimes she doesn't have the patience for music at all, but right now it also sometimes acts as a tool to help her focus (or depending on how you look at it, de-focus) her mind. And she'll listen to what X listens to. But otherwise it seems like something... very apart from her.

In one very brief scene, Asami is showing records to Mako, so presumably she does have a particular taste in music. And given what was playing, it seems to be the more modern-style of music popular in the Avatarworld in LoK, which I think the creators described as "jazz if invented in China in the 20s." Which seems to be pretty popular generally in Republic City.

Leslie canonically really likes Sarah McLachlan. Like, if she gives you a playlist, it will be mostly Sarah McLachlan.

Manny's canon has a great soundtrack, which I assume is the generally like what he would listen to, given that it's used so extensively to set the mood. Wikipedia describes it mostly as a mix of South American folk music, jazz, and swing.

Tommy's musical tastes are occasionally referenced in canon. He's generally a classic rock fan, since he grew up during the '60s and '70s. References off the top of my head include having sung Beatles songs to his children when they were babies, and wearing a Who concert t-shirt from their 1989 The Kids Are Alright Tour. Though I think he also has an appreciation for jazz standards (influenced either by his parents or his wife) because he was pretty stoked to get tickets to a Tony Bennett concert.

Voodoo's adolescence was split between South Boston and Dorchester in the late 80s and early 90s, and he says 'yo' during gameplay.

THEREFORE HE LIKES HIP-HOP. IT MAKES PERFECT SENSE.

(He fucking hates folk music, though.)

About the only music there is for John to listen to is folk music - most of which he likes, so long as the lyrics aren't too whiny.

Nikola for me likes classical music more than anything, and a bit of jazz. He definitely, canonically, doesn't think much of rock n' roll. Much less French Canadian rock n' roll.

Alcide...I think he's a little bit country, a little bit rock n' roll. I could see him liking blues, though, and probably some jazz.

Darius...I have no idea. We don't see much music in Hunger Games other than the songs Katniss' dad used to sing. I'd guess that he likes just about anything, though. As long as it's well-played.

Posner's canon, as Jenna said, is all 80s alternative and standards. I think he leans more toward the standards, but he likes the other as well.

Orpheus... He doesn't play other people's music, but he will listen to it sometimes. He has very picky taste, though. He likes music that is doing something new. He hates pop. The Beatles were okay, though, as far as he's concerned. He can see the appeal of Elvis. And at the moment, he quite likes Mumford & Sons.

Music for most of my pups is era appropriate though they enjoy things outside of their eras.

Will's got a fondness for cowboy songs, classical music and some rock thanks to Milliways.

William, Jane and Charles all enjoy the music of their times though Charles does keep getting other era and wordly earworms due to this telepathy.

Sameth has odd tastes as he liked the music in Ancelstierre which is fantasy 1920s English and then his own world is more generic fantasy. Music is a big part of how some Charter spells work so he has an ear for music but I think doesn't focus too much on it.

Tumnus plays music and what he likes could best be called folk or traditional just traditional Narnian. I know he adores discovering new musicians in Milliways.

Demeter loves many sorts of music but songs connected to life and harvests and that are meant for dancing make her happiest.

The Pirate King is from an operetta so I don't think there's a better answer for him other than what he sings.

Kara has no reason to be familiar with modern-day Earth music, but in canon she finds some kind of comfort in listening to her father's piano concerts. So I tend to think of her as mostly a rock fan with a soft spot for classical piano. I imagine her as the kind of person who occasionally finds herself belting songs out at the top of her lungs and tapping her hands against her steering wheel while she's listening to the radio in the car.

Canonically, Kate's a Patsy Cline fan. I think of her as liking country and "oldies" and classic rock and stuff from her preteen/teen years in the 90s. Given a diner jukebox, it'd be hard for her not to find something she'd enjoy.

Faye's from the future, but Bebop is so jazz-influenced that I think of her as enjoying jazz on a very casual level: not knowing many song titles or artist names, but liking what she hears. On a ship with a radio, she'd listen to pop music stations during her own time, and it's my personal canon for her that she likes the Rolling Stones.

Generally it's best to go off personality. And if they don't come from a music society, there's always ways to have others introduce them to it. Especially in Milliways.

Since Joan is a goth, there's a lot of 80s/90s alternative stuff. Especially bands like The Cure, Joy Division, and Siouxsie and the Banshees. And lots of alternative stuff

I like to give my characters theme songs or sometimes entire playlists, which leads into a shortcut I stole from an elsegame player: base the character's musical tastes on the songs that represent them.

This does not especially help me with Aradia. It's more useful for modernish Earthish types. And, being a shortcut, it's basically what I do when I have no better ideas, so as to avoid passing my own musical tastes on to every single character of mine.

Now for the OCs: Gareth has wide-ranging musical tastes but is fond of Queen. (This applies to his clone as well. Despite having only been exposed to modern music for a year or two.) Tamsyn was raised on the Beatles and still likes them, but she prefers hard rock, industrial, and goth music. Clone Gareth has a friend who tries very hard to get him into Bon Jovi and Whitesnake, also; it's not working especially well so far.

Clementine is a total pop music fiend. She loves Madonna and considers Lady Gaga her "soul sister."

Dixie is immersed in the music of her day, specifically dancehall. Bar has introduced her to big band and she specifically adores Peggy Lee.

I believe Jules is canonically a modern rock fan, and I think she loves 80's pop.

Pinkie makes her own music wherever she goes!
