DE: I talk to the trees, but they don't listen to me

One of my own today...what music is making you smile? Is making you dance in you chair? New and old? What about your pups, canonically or not?

In other words, share the tunes people!

I've been feeling overwhelmed lately at work so that means lots of comfort music, which for me is country and alternative.
-Mary Chapin Carpenter, Kathey Mattea, Rosanne Cash, Tim McGraw, Tim O'Brien for the country
-Jakob Dylan, The Mountain Goats, Seanan McGuire's Wicked Girls for alternative
-Also musical and movie soundtracks-Seabiscuit is good for making me feel hopeful, same with Into the Woods

There's other stuff, but these are the ones that I keep picking out as they help.

In terms of my pups, I'm not sure. I feel like the only one who might be able to answer the question is Charles and I think his music is greatly influenced by Raven.

*shrug* I still seem to be on a Kidneythieves and Poe thing. Neither are dance-able.

Well, no, Kidneythieves sometimes gets shoved under the industrial umbrella, and I have seen folks dance the smoking crab to those sorts of songs at the goff-ish clubs.

Kidneythieves does the most awesome cover of "Crazy" known to man, God, or Willie Nelson. (I exaggerate, of course; it would be the very essence of hubris to presume on the opinions of Willie Nelson.)

The office I'm working from at the moment has a spectacular view of Boston Harbor, Logan Airport, and some power generation plant that happens to include a few really gorgeous wind turbines. This makes me smile because I've mentally associated the wind turbine project in Ellen's world with Nero, by Two Steps From Hell, which is just kind of magnificent no matter what reminds you of it.

Lately I've been feeling rather introspective and hurty - I'm not feeling well, and my dad is going through strenuous cancer treatement - so I've been going to folk and alternative stand-bys for comfort. Iron and Wine, the Mountain Goats, Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer, Storyhill, Dar Williams, and some more abstract pieces like those by E.S. Posthumus, Ludovico Einaudi, and Rachel Currea.

Also, "Trip the Light," from the 2012 Where the hell is Matt? video. It makes me happy and gives me hope.

The Mountain Goats are good at comfort music, its a particular type of music, but they know how to do that life will get better.

*makes you tea* I hope things get a little easier.

For about six months, my upbeat music of choice has been Movits!, a Swedish band that blends Big Band instruments with hip-hop lyrics (my sources call it Electro Swing). I don't speak a word of Swedish, but I like the energy of the songs. Here's an example:

EDIT: Well... damn. YouTube embed code doesn't seem to be working. Go here to see the video.

The title translates as "The Wrong Side of the Garden." Lyrics in English can be found here.

MOVITS. Awesomeness personified, it's true.

Have you seen their youtube videos of their American tour, "First We Take Manhattan"?

I'm particularly fond of Äppelknyckarjazz and Tom Jones.

"Oh, for crying out loud, Tommy, now what are you doing? Thanks a lot for all your help. I really appreciate it. Thank you for not coming in."
"I wasn't supposed to come in."
"I know you weren't supposed to come in. But you didn't!"

(I honestly know I Talk to the Trees only from the Smothers Brothers.)

Right, so because of the 3yo, we listen a lot to Hr. Skæg (Mr. beard, Mr. Fun). Danish children's telly in the good, old fashioned educational vein.

Hr. Skæg looks a little bit like Rasputin, which makes it slightly surreal at times. Here's the The Alphabet Song.

When I am on the computer, I am listening to Hoven Droven, Hedningarna, and Sorten Muld. So, Swedish and Danish folk-fusion-rock-electro stuff?

There is a song that actually made me dance on the street, out in public, because you MUST DANCE TO IT only I didn't have a partner so I used a pillar to take some of my weight. Iiiii'm sure people thought I was insane.

Vast unwanted and deeply disappointing changes of plan for the rest of my life this week mean I'm walking around listening to live tapes of the Mountain Goats, including and especially this.

However, to read for class, I am alternating between my Leo Kottke playlist and the greatest mixtape forever and ever amen, Chicks With Hits, which is 3+ hours' worth of ladies from the 80s and 90s, and it is AMAZING.

I'm moving at the end of October, which means I have ~40 days to clean out the accumulated clutter of eight years, so I'm listening to a lot of pump-me-up type stuff right now.

Specifically, right now it's 500 Miles by the Proclaimers; and next up on the playlist are things like the Black-eyed Peas, Blondie, AC/DC and Salt-n-Pepa.

I'd love to say it was something cool, but nope. Right now it's Genesis.

Phil Collins era Genesis.

Though a couple nights ago I dusted off the old John Martyn for the first time in...nearly a month. Ye gads, that's an eternity.

Here's a song about people showing each other their packages.

All I can think of musically at the moment is what's been intermittently stuck in my head since Tuesday noon:

He fiddles in the tavern
where there's barely room to stand,
he fiddles on the stage
with the Forward Marching Band,
he dons his knitted halfgloves
and he fiddles best of all
when he fiddles for the singers
who assemble on the mall.

Sung to the tune of 'turkey in the straw', only a bit slower. That's from the singalong held in our capitol rotunda (out on the steps on Friday's), and there really is a fiddler in the bunch. His name is Daithi, and he is marvelous. The Forward Marching Band is real, too.

And that bit about there being barely room to stand in the tavern? I've been to singalong parties at a local. It's true. What a crowd! :)

"Why Me?" by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy

"Irish Whiskey" by the Cherry Poppin' Daddies -- I'm a drunk and a sentimental man so / dust us off a bottle of your best Irish whiskey and drink with me / to departed friends

"Equus" by the Cherry Poppin' Daddies

"Drink Drank Drunk" by the Atomic Fireballs (basically the entire album Torch This Place, which takes me back to my road-tripping-to-concerts days)

I love tons of different kinds of music, but Indigo Girls primarily.

This is what the inside of my brain's sounded like for the past couple of weeks. Thanks inner Pinkie!

Clem is canonically into tons of musicians, mostly acid and garage rock. Jones lists the bands she loves during the in-character commentary for Reno911!Miami. Primary among them is Steely Dan. She adores Lady Gaga and Madonna and Katy Perry in my headcanon.

Dixie's had her taste broadened by Milliway - popular music was in its infancy in her time, with wax recordings just coming into popular use.

Juliet loves all sorts of rock musica - headcanoned to be mostly 80's music.

Pinkie WRITES her own music.
