Impressive.

Quite so.

"I am a moderately resourceful man with a talent for making the best out of risky situations." Thief and likely a gambler too.

And she doesn't even try!

"A thief and a highwayman?" Her mother wouldn't approve of her shooting with such a man. This is possibly why she hasn't left.

"My lady, you offend me." But the wide grin says otherwise. "I am likely the most honest, hard-working man you ever met."

"And I much prefer to work in cities. Roads are useful when you need to move from place to place, but it's a terrible hassle for all involved to perform a reasonable job in the wilds of Sanctuary." No no, too many dangers out there.

She knows what that grin means. Even the most regal and well-mannered young lady of the court would recognize it - and Merida is anything but a well-mannered lass. She shifts slightly in her saddle to give him better regard, eyebrow rising upward in mock-surprise. "Aye, I suppose it's hard work cutting throats and snipping purse strings." She's heard wild tales - in fact, she's practically sought them out. "Where is your Sanctuary?"

He does not comment on her assumptions: sometimes it's better if people don't know. "Sanctuary? Sanctuary is the whole World, my lady." He shakes head. "The Matrons at the orphanage told us stories about how Sanctuary hangs in the void between the High Heavens and the Burning Hells, and considering the demonic invasions and angelic interventions, well..."

"...the tales must have some truth to them at least." He fires another arrow, hitting the target midway to center.

She's got a well-developed sense of justice - it comes from being treated as a pawn, a word that would devastate her parents if she used it aloud yet one that she feels suits it well. "Ahh. No home of your own, then?" she understands well - and she had been innately curious, for surely even thieves have a place to call home? And when he speaks about the orphanage her eyebrow quirks upward. "And you've chosen to tempt fate?"

Merida plucks up an arrow from her quiver and spins it between her fingers, quiet, contemplatively.

"I was raised in Kingsport, the mighty city by the sea: home to the Royal fleet and endless nets reeking of fish." He smiles some, and turns to her. "I'd rather and sooner say, fate chose to tempt me."

She outright smiles at that. "dun Broch is richer - and cut off from the rest of the world. It takes days to reach us. I suppose I've been locked in by the sea my whole life."

She would have been a fine pirate, if not a fine thief, had she more options.

[personal profile] unrepentantrogue 2012-12-08 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
"I... somehow doubt the sea alone would be able to lock you in, m'lady." Lyndon raises a brow, regarding her.

[personal profile] boghadair 2012-12-08 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
Merida's laugh is a sad one. "There are ties enough to bind me in my world - or ties that will try." She fights them - sometimes she's wily enough to win. "But I know why I love to shoot and climb so often." She shoulders her bow and notches her arrow, slowly pulling back the string."I'm lucky enough to have this place to run to."

"We all have out bonds and ties, to whatever fate we take or forge ourselves," Lyndon quietly says, looking up at the sky. "It's more a matter of facing our choices and dealing with the consequences."
boghadair: (misneachail (courageous))

[personal profile] boghadair 2012-12-24 04:32 pm (UTC)(link)
"Aye." This is true for Merida, sadly, as hard as she's struggled against what holds her down and what holds her back. "I know I'll have to do that, but it's a sight better than living a whole life filled with regret."
unrepentantrogue: (Default)

[personal profile] unrepentantrogue 2013-02-12 04:13 pm (UTC)(link)
"We all have our regrets, our shadows and our sins." The man nods somberly, then smiles. "So, what am I doing wrong? I can hit a man-sized target easily, but sometimes a bit more... finesse, would be useful."

Serious talks can be interesting, for a while. Just for a while.
boghadair: (sor (hesitant))

[personal profile] boghadair 2013-03-01 11:19 am (UTC)(link)
Merida's eyebrow forks. She can't, won't, ever consider regretting what she's considering doing.

"Steady yourself," she suggests. "You're quivering the shaft when you notch it."

"...I imagine that would demand more standing-still than I'm used to." Which might be a hard feat for a thief. "I wonder if I should practice shooting while moving, to get over it."

Lyndon shifts his stance to a more balanced (and less appropriate to a quick dash) one, and fires, hitting closer to center. "Hm. Good idea, just need a way to make it work in situations where I don't have the luxury of standing still."

"Straight and true," Merida says, unwittingly quoting Ferugus' long-ago primary instructions to her. The result is, indeed, properly impressive, and earnshim a mile.

"That takes focus," she warns. Intense focus.

"Focus, concentration, seriousness...? I say, all things I am far from the best at, m'lady." Lyndon is... careless. "But, I'll have to keep it all in mind."
boghadair: (glionder (joy))

[personal profile] boghadair 2013-04-09 06:50 am (UTC)(link)
There's a frustrated grump. "Maybe not SERIOUS, but concentration is important." Merida is less serious than completely rash.

"Concentration, I will try very hard for it."

Maybe.

Possibly.

"Thank you very much for the advice, m'lady."

She's a lady, still; a curtsy is bobbed for him. "Sir."
