DE: What's In A Name?

From [personal profile] minkhollow :
Another oldie but goodie: Where did your characters' user names come from?

And how about your journal name?

My user name is one I've been working with on various forums dating back to the days when I had a 1200 bps modem and dialed the local BBSes. It's a background character in the histories of Elizabeth Moon's Deed of Paksenarrion and Legacy of Gird books.

[personal profile] acts_of_gord is taken from a Web site of the same name, but has nothing to do with Half-Life- the Acts of Gord site is about a video game store owner in British Columbia and how he says he deals with horrible customers. Fun, though, and it sounded good for Gordon.

[personal profile] gone_byebye is taken from the end of Ghostbusters. "Ray has gone bye-bye, Egon. What've you got left?"

[personal profile] hecu_marine - Adrian's original username on LJ was a reference to something the G-Man said, but I changed it when we moved to DW because I wanted something that more directly spoke of who Shephard was and what he did. HECU was his old unit, the Hazardous Environment Combat Unit.

[personal profile] hands_of_blu is because Medic has about as much regard for human life and dignity as the Hands of Blue in the Firefly 'verse.

[personal profile] pattersongs is because Mordin notes that he performed small parts in community theater for cultural exploration purposes and they mostly had him perform the patter songs in Gilbert and Sullivan. Journal names referring to his most famous singing number, "Scientist Salarian", were already taken.

[personal profile] igetthatalot for Varric is because of a line where someone claims that oh, they're just maaadly in love with him (or something along those lines), and he responds with "Yeah, I get that a lot."

[personal profile] chimpan_a is because I was a little stuck for a suitable name for Zira, and then thought of the Simpsons episode where Troy McClure performed in the Planet of the Apes musical. "I hate every ape I see / From Chimpan-A to Chimpan-Z!"

[personal profile] covert_bandage is because if you crouch and go into stealth mode while playing Fallout New Vegas and you have Arcade Gannon as your follower at the time, he often notes that 'okay, but my covert bandaging skills are a little rusty'.

[personal profile] aaaaaaaagh_sky is because Ellen grew up underground and on my first Fallout 3 playthrough I kept thinking that I was controlling a nineteen year old agoraphobe, who probably did a lot of looking straight up and spinning in circles and screaming at the top of her lungs in panic.

It's a background character in the histories of Elizabeth Moon's Deed of Paksenarrion and Legacy of Gird books.

And reappears in the new series that picks up where the Deed of Paksenarrion left off, just so you know... :)

[personal profile] cameoflage 2012-10-18 01:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been Cameo since I was thirteen (picked it out of one of the weirder sections of a baby name book), but by itself it was usually taken or occasionally too short. So I came up with a couple of puns on it: Cameoflage and CameoAppearance.

[personal profile] death_fangirl is named that because the first time all the surviving trolls and two of the humans met up, Terezi described Aradia's enthusiasm for having a funeral for the dead trolls as a 'death fangirl thing'.

My username is my ham radio callsign. Effectively unique and easy for me to remember.

[personal profile] venusadept_2 is very simple: Felix is the second playable Venus Adept in his canon.

[personal profile] baron_dragoon is likewise simple (I'm not really all that creative, name-wise): Kain's a Dragoon - the Dragoon, more or less - of the kingdom of Baron.

[personal profile] needs_fern is a little more intricate: Fluttershy, when I was first watching her canon, reminded me quite a lot of Dorothy, from the video game Rune Factory 2. Now, Dorothy is able to deal with people - as long as she has her stuffed kangaroo-thing, Fern. (I was amused, a couple of days after making the journal, to realize that Leesha and I had quite independently picked usernames that were references to other canons. Sadly, the pattern has not continued with subsequent ponies.)

[personal profile] magnetic_hair is kind of a möbius reference, in that it references what Youtube Autocaptioner inspired fans to call an earlier MLP character. (Specifically, Steven Magnet.)

Incidentally, if anyone who's familiar with the G1 pony cartoon wants to help me pick a username for my Wind Whistler voice, I'd appreciate it.

[personal profile] psyched_you_out is a legacy name from LJ, where two different people gave me Shawn journals with nearly identical usernames. I tweaked the spelling when I brought him over to DW. It's a reference to the theme song, of course.

[personal profile] spaceboy3000 has a few different layers to it. It sums up his life as an intergalactic delivery boy, and "Space Boy" is also the name of the comic he reads at a few points in the series. It's also a vague reference to the show's pilot episode.

[personal profile] harvard_bounty is pretty straightforward. I wanted something that would encompass both his well-educated book-smart side and his rougher trail-savvy side.

And future pups. Because I can.

[personal profile] doing_science - because of this. (Major earworm alert.)
[personal profile] eagle_shredder - a combination of his name and the nickname on his official website bio. (I also find it strangely amusing that the official site spells his name about four different ways.)
[personal profile] venturedean is solely because I couldn't think of anything wittier. :/

My own name is the screenname I've used since I first started going online in the days of Prodigy and AOL. It's a reference to Gypsy, the big purple robot on MST3K.

Mine: it's a line from Superman: Earth One about Lois and why he cut a paragraph. And then I decided I liked it and hijacked it. (For that matter, my comics!Lois journal is also a line from that, but 'where the story is' is just too universally Lois.)

[personal profile] operates_cobra - Henry Mills and his Operation COBRA.

[personal profile] presspasskey - I am not always pleased with it, but it sticks in my mind. Steph via Kati is to blame for this. Combo press pass and a Dr. Fate line in SV S9 about with reference to her in Clark's life ("She is the key").

(side trip into MM and SR!verse:
[personal profile] rememberswhy - Perry says no one will remember why Lois won a Pulitzer, just that she did; she can't forget. Also, either she doesn't remember and later does about how Jason's half-alien, or she remembers and doesn't say. Possibly mildly ironic, but possibly not.
[personal profile] solisfilium - A) pretty, I like the sound in Latin; B) Jason was born under our yellow sun and, well, his dad's almost like a sun god?)

[personal profile] student_of_impossibility - I am least happy with this one. It's Tavi's post-canon name, approximately. Ditto my Des journal. I want a new one.

My own is from 2004, when I wanted to move away from having a fandom-specific username (which was, at the time, [livejournal.com profile] brandybuck -- people who didn't know LotR kept assuming my name was Brandy Buck). My favorite color is red, and I'm a shoe fiend, and there's nothing quite so dandy as having a new pair of red shoes, is there.

[personal profile] valiantrebel is something Hal calls Hotspur in their final showdown (which you can watch here, though I can't, because it breaks my heart and makes me angry!).Paraphrased:
Hotspur: If I mistake not, thou art Harry Monmouth.
Prince Hal: You speak as if I would deny my name.
Hotspur: My name is Harry Percy.
Prince Hal: Why then, I see a very valiant rebel of that name!
Some other discarded possibilities were icannotchoose (he's always going on about how he can't choose not to be angry at someone who says something stupid), andtoconclude (he ends a lot of rants this way, and I find it kind of endearing) and whoshallsaymenay (because dang, he's just that good).

My handle is my RL nickname. I'm so used to everybody calling me Aura that I find it funny that my coworkers always call me by my full name. XD;

[personal profile] gorgonfondness came from the part in SSSC when Alex and company are in Damon's Spire. They have to pass a series of tests and the final one is to sculpt a huge piece of clay into a treasure. Since the clay's so big, they decide to take turns with one person directing the efforts of the others. When it's Mia's turn, she has them sculpt a gorgon, apparently her favorite animal. This prompts Nash to say, "I never knew you had such a fondness for monsters." Her journal was originally going to be fond_of_monsters but I screwed that up. I like what I've got better now, anyway.

[personal profile] pullsneedles is all about Lucas's goal and ability throughout canon. Only two people in the whole world can pull the Needles keeping the Dark Dragon asleep: Lucas and the Masked Man. It's become a race between the two to see who can pull all seven first.

[personal profile] knightoftheswan is from Lohengrin's adopted backstory based on Arthurian legend. There's trouble in some far off land and a lady is in need of a champion. Lohengrin arrives on the scene in a boat drawn by a giant swan. His one condition to his service is that his lady is not permitted to ask his name, so he's called the Knight of the Swan instead.

Mine are TERRIBLY CLEVER. *lies*

[personal profile] the_lioness: Alanna's war name is 'The Lioness.' It will take me a while to get Alan to that point in canon, but I pounced on the name while it was available. Also, I wanted to differentiate a little from LJ!Alanna, who was a_lioness. Conveniently, a_lioness was already taken on DW!

[personal profile] peerless_thayet: Renowned for her beauty, Thayet is known throughout Tortall as Thayet the Peerless. In truth, the name makes her mildly embarrassed, so she pretends it's extolling her other, more useful virtues.

[personal profile] snowy_river_man: Um. He's The Man From Snowy River. See? Clever. :)

[personal profile] doc_evil: He is proud of his evil medical degree, ok?

[personal profile] try_corsets: This username doesn't really fit Elizabeth anymore, but I'm rather attached to it. Anyway, it's a result of her "Try wearing a corset!" line in PotC: CotBP.

[personal profile] headed4hell: Earl tells Grace she is headed for Hell if she doesn't turn her life around, so the username is both literal and a feisty "Up yours, Earl."

[personal profile] truckasaurus_mitts: It is a running gag in canon that Lana has ENORMOUS hands. Archer himself is to blame for the name. My other option was danger_zone. For reasons.

[personal profile] a_mad_hope: There are actual layers to Karou's username! Layers which are extremely spoilery. Er... how do you do white text again?

As for others:

[personal profile] becareful_boyo: It's something Abigail says a lot, especially to Raph.

[personal profile] cantkill_truth: You can't kill the truth is one of George's mantras. And there are other reasons I love this name. Yup.

My own journal name comes from "genuine artificial," which was an oxymoron I picked out of a short story because it amused me. That was my nick on a BBS about... oh lordy, twelve or so years ago now, and over time there it got shortened into Genarti.

[personal profile] river_meimei is because mèimei means "little sister" in Chinese, and is something River gets called as an endearment a lot in canon -- mostly by Simon, but other members of the crew call her that too. And being a little sister is pretty fundamental to River's personality. (Plus Batya and I wanted to match in format, so it was and is [personal profile] river_meimei and [personal profile] simon_doctor.)

[personal profile] regan_tam... is her name. Because I couldn't think of anything more clever for a one-scene character. Next!

[personal profile] 3nanashi is the name I inherited from when Ji played Trowa, but I like it! I'd've changed it to 03nanashi when we moved to DW if I'd thought of it, but I didn't. "Nanashi" means "nameless" in Japanese, and it's what Trowa used to be called as a kid, and he was Gundam Pilot 03, from colony L3. It's a name that's very tied into his canon and pre-canon life and issues, but I like having a callback to his history inherent in his journal name. Even if he's grown and changed a lot, that past is still very influential on who he is.

[personal profile] demisemidemon is because all Claymores are part demon. But Clare is (spoiler!) only a quarter demon, not half. (I only wish I could have justified naming her demisemihemidemon, because I am really easily amused.) Also I like the reminder that Clare isn't exactly human anymore, and that that yoma part of her is always there and relevant, no matter what else is going on.

[personal profile] mjolnir_retriever is [personal profile] varadia's fault. Mjölnir is, of course, Thor's hammer, and regaining it is a major part of the plot and his character arc in his first movie. Also, Thor gets compared a lot to a giant dog. It's easy to overstate that (thanks, a lot of fandom), but there's also a lot of truth in it: he's big and energetic and full of bounding self-confidence and loyalty, and he makes friends fast, and if he loves you he'll love you forever even if he stops trusting you, and also he's a wall of muscle who could kill you if he felt like it. Also, he's got floppy blond hair and the comparison's funny.

I've had the same journal name since 2001 (!!), back when I was a high schooler completely in love with phoenix mythology. Somebody on LJ had already nabbed the same username sans the "e" at the end, so: add an "e," poof, game on! When I first joined Milliways, [livejournal.com profile] avariel_wings introduced me to crackchat as "Phoenix," and the rest is history.

(And I do still love the phoenix story, to the point where I have a phoenix tattoo that I designed myself. Fire and rebirth, baby. It gets me right where I live.)

The only pup I haven't put through this meme yet is [personal profile] a_bolin_stone. I have no excuse for that username besides liking really, really terrible rock-based puns. >.> I have a feeling Bolin would appreciate an awful pun like that, though! Just be glad somebody had already registered bolin_in_the_deep.

In the original Conan Doyle stories, Moriarty is given tenure at the age of 21 after writing a treatise on the binomial theorem that was very popular in Europe.

Since we know his later work, Dynamics of an Asteroid, exists in the universe of A Study in Emerald, presumably that one does too. Hence the username.

My own is what I am. (I'm moderately goth, anyway. I had just gotten into it when I came up with the screen name for AIM use, and Demigoth was already taken.) It tended to amuse people from the start, so it's my default screen name now, 'cause if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

[personal profile] a1enzo: The "a1" is short for "alphanumeric," Enzo's catchphrase which means "awesome" for no very good reason. (Although the A-1 actually makes it make sense, in a backwards kind of way!) On LJ, alphanumeric was taken and alphanumericenzo was over the character limit and just plain unwieldy.

Pups I never play and really should:

[personal profile] justiceoverlaw: From his original short story:
The Nightmare Detective looked at each of the AJC members in turn as he spoke. "I understand why you draw the line at the law, because to move past it is to move into an arena with no restraints, no boundaries. I have chosen, unlike you, to live in that region outside the law, because that's where you have to go to hunt down the people who would destroy the world encompassed by the law."

"So," Constitution sneered, "you're admitting you're a criminal."

"No, I admit I am an outlaw, and there is a difference. I do have a guide out there: justice."

[personal profile] anxietycloset: It's where he lives, or at least where he appears and operates from.
minkhollow: (here at the end of all things)

[personal profile] minkhollow 2012-10-18 02:33 pm (UTC)(link)
My first online handle was Cimorene, by way of the Enchanted Forest Chronicles, but by the time I got my hands on an LJ invite code (coming up on 10 years ago!) I figured that would be long gone and I didn't feel like tacking any numbers onto it. So I started trying to come up with something, and my eyes lit on a copy of Hermit of Mink Hollow that I'd just got, and I went 'YES.' In my book, you can never go wrong with Todd Rundgren. (This, incidentally, is why my sandbox journal is [personal profile] hermit_of.)

[personal profile] dark_dancer: Originally post_whitewash, because... I was feeling very uncreative when I made Cata's journal. I took advantage of the move to rename it; now it's a reference to Sam waxing poetic about her at one point in canon (since that's about all the canon she actually has).

[personal profile] never_misses: Sam mentions at one point that, before the Assassins' Guild completely disintegrated, people would ask for 'the blade that never misses,' meaning him (there's a certain amount of magic involved in that ability, but he ignores that, considering). I couldn't get it on LJ, so that one was doesnotmiss, but the permutation I wanted in the first place was free here, so!

[personal profile] claudiometer: "Oh no no no, you do NOT shut down the Claudiometer." Couldn't go wrong with words out of Claud's own mouth.

[personal profile] iamso_awesome: After some bandying about over syllables, this is the last line of Apollo's first terrible haiku in The Titan's Curse. Sums him up, fit the character limit, boom, done.

[personal profile] not_elvish: HOW DID I NOT THINK OF THIS ONE NINE YEARS AGO, SERIOUSLY. Throughout Soul Music people keep asking Imp if he's elvish and he has no idea where they get this idea. (Incidentally, that's why I use Orlando Bloom for Imp's icons. He's got the right look, and what with Legolas, adds an extra layer to the joke.)

[personal profile] no_martyr: I have... Issues with Regulus' fate in canon. Let's just say.

[personal profile] itrunsinthefamily: This is easily the most convoluted of my set.

I knew I wanted a journal for Red and I knew I wanted one that'd work for Ruby as well, but I could not for the life of me think of anything. People made suggestions (WHY NO REGINA 'MANEATER' IS NOT HELPING), none of them really clicked, I sat on it...

...the show announced Roger Daltrey was doing what amounted to a very hilarious cameo, and I went 'hey in light of that do I get bonus points for a Who reference?'...

...and then it hit me. The journal name is indeed a Who reference; it's a line from "The Real Me." (Added irony, what with the curse.) It's slightly too long for an LJ name, but hey, we're not on LJ anymore!

(For bonus points, [personal profile] abetter_shot: In last season's '60s flashback, Rebecca tells Jack she's a better shot than he is. There's also the fact that devoting her entire life to the Warehouse was never her plan.)
aberration: NASA Webb image of the Carina nebula (not very sporting)

[personal profile] aberration 2012-10-18 02:58 pm (UTC)(link)
[personal profile] aberration is sort of left over from very long ago days when I was more into anime (really, I think this was something I chose when I was 12 or 13), but it doesn't really mean anything. I've thought about changing it, especially now I'm more over at DW and my tumblrs have different names anyway, but I'm not sure what I'd change it to.

[personal profile] ellectrical is a play on Elle's name with the word 'electrical.' It's probably still my favorite username - I did deliberately choose the word 'electrical' to make a pun of instead of something like ellectric or ellectricity or something, I think because I wanted the word to be an adjective, and I guess I thought this form of the adjective more encompassed the idea of her being like electrically connected/charged/full, whatever. Or maybe I just wanted it to have four syllables instead of three, I don't know.

[personal profile] friendswaffleswork - I'll just let Leslie say it: We need to remember what's important in life: Friends, waffles, and work. Or waffles, friends, and work. It doesn't matter. But work is third.

[personal profile] thisgrimfandango - Obviously includes the title of the canon in the username, but it also comes from a poem that you can choose to hear during the game if you bug Olivia Ofrenda enough. The last two lines, I think, make the words "grim fandango" a metaphor for the story of the game itself: But now we dance this grim fandango/And will four years before we rest.

[personal profile] mix_it_up - This is from a line in canon, in which Asami tells Korra that "You can't be afraid to mix it up sometimes." I also think of it as a play on the fact that Asami's the non-bender of the group, so she's more often the one who has to think outside the box when it comes to how she acts and handles herself. And as she's someone who's been fortunate to both be talented and exposed to the processes that develop new technology, she's pretty good in that role.

And for to-be-apped:

[personal profile] notsweetenough - This is Marceline from Adventure Time. The username comes from her song "Just Your Problem," in which she sings to Princess Bubblegum, Sorry I'm not made of sugar/And I'm not sweet enough for you.

My personal username is a portmanteau of my first and middle names. I use it, or a variation thereof, as my username pretty much everywhere.

[personal profile] vance_prime - In canon, the Combine refers to Alyx as "Vance Subprime," but she's been "promoted" now that her father's dead.

[personal profile] g00d_d0ggie -Pretty self-explanatory.

[personal profile] no_vampires_plz - When you have a character named Twilight Sparkle, Stephanie Meyer jokes are kind of inevitable. This was my attempt to head them off at the pass.

[personal profile] always_the_moon - Title of a Jonathan Coulton song.

[personal profile] with_his_tail_high - A quote from his canon.

I've easily had a dozen of online handles since I started on the internet 15 (!) years ago, so when I created my DW account I figured it was time to use something I wouldn't get tired of: my real name (or at least the version of it that I like and use) and middle name.

...but I'm having name-change jonzes anyway.

[personal profile] dragons_emrys is my least favorite name: Emrys is what the Druids calls Merlin, he's a dragonlord...yeah, there's got to be something better. Unfortunately just "Emrys" is taken. I will take suggestions.

[personal profile] jack_inthegreen is one of the Green Man's names/identities/related mythologies.

[personal profile] dont_turn_around is because he's standing right behind you. Don't look. Run.

My others are lines from canon.

[personal profile] bagginsofbagend: "I'm a Baggins of Bag End, we don't go on adventures."

[personal profile] pushtheboatout "So I thought I'd push the boat out, so to speak."

[personal profile] thekidfrombrooklyn: "What makes you so special?" "Nothing. I'm just a kid from Brooklyn." akidfrombrooklyn was already taken, though, so he became the kid from Brooklyn.

I got to sleep in today and will have a short day as I go check in on the conferences but don't have much to do there. I'm going to try and answer these in general order of creation.

[personal profile] ceitfianna comes from two things. Ceit is the Scots Gaelic spelling of Kate, one of the few languages that has plain Kate as a name in it. Fianna is the name of some mythical Irish warriors and a Werewolf: The Apocalypse tribe and a word I just liked. Its become one of my main online identities.

[personal profile] will_scarlett was my first character journal and his name is his name. I didn't realize I could do more complicated names until I actually got into Milliways. Then I went ooh look at all those interesting names. I'm still surprised that no one had grabbed this username before I started playing him.

[personal profile] agloriousthing is fairly obvious, his most famous line of song, "For it is a glorious thing to be a pirate king."

[personal profile] wheatencrown Demeter is associated with wheat and sometimes shown with a crown of wheat. It fit and I like the symbolism of it.

[personal profile] friend_of_lucy Chat helped me create this one, Bethan in particular as I had no idea of a good username. Then she said this one and I went yes, because Tumnus defines himself through his friendship with Lucy as does a lot of canon.

[personal profile] janebecomes The movie is called Becoming Jane and this was the combination that wasn't taken.

[profile] makesthing This comes from a canon quote and is another username that I'm surprised wasn't taken before. The quote is "that's all I'm good at, making things."

[personal profile] morethanprops I had a hard time coming up with this one as I couldn't find the right way to show who he was in a few words. In canon, he talks a lot about his props as furniture that help sell a new identity and I hit upon this one. I like it but it doesn't click as well as some others do.

[personal profile] not_his_pa William defines himself against his father throughout his entire canon and this was the name that came together.

[personal profile] balancingminds This is one of those cases of I couldn't get any of the names I first had an idea for and ended up stumbling on the perfect one. Charles is all about balance and deals constantly with minds.

Bonus: [personal profile] piwakawaka is the Maori name for a fantail, the name of the type of bird that Tiwa is.
gondolin_noble: (Orcs. Dancing orcs.)

[personal profile] nitro_is_ace: This is, actually, something she'd say, and a holdover from when I was first signing up and miss-read the 'naming your pup journal' instructions, and thought that the pup's actual name had to be in the journal name. Yeaaaah. Some days, my brain, it has problems.

[personal profile] gondolin_noble: Because there's only one Glorfindel. Really. And he's refusing to say if Balrogs have wings or not.

[personal profile] katyafeline: Is an echo off of Olga's username - the diminutive form of her name (Yekaterina) and her common shifted form.

[profile] pickled_tribute: Haymitch was a tribute in the 50th Hunger Games, and came out of it through a whole lot of determination, orneriness, and sheer luck. He has since turned to liquor as a coping mechanism when he realized that the really lucky ones died in the arena.

[personal profile] notabricklayer: Stolen from the very frequent repetition of the complaint of "I'm a doctor, not a...", this one coming from an episode where Kirk decides Bones is the best one to put together a creature that better resembles someone's abandoned pottery project.

[personal profile] properpolice: Shazza just wants to be a proper policeman, do proper police work, not this everlovingly idiotic 'care in the community' or, more predictably, filing and fetching tea.

[personal profile] 777thdegree: Is Balthazar's ranking, and one assumes something no one else is going to get to for a while, since he's technically the sorcerer longest in practice, even out of the three of Merlin's apprentices.

[personal profile] souffle_girlek: When the Doctor finds Oswin, he calls her 'Souffle Girl' and she retorts with 'Chin Boy' because wow, that thing probably registers as its own area code. Also spoilers: And seeing as Oswin is now a Dalek, or at least stuck in a Dalek form (and I honestly have no idea how Moffet is getting her out of this) she gets the 'girlek' added on. Poor Oswin.

Now I'm wondering how the rankings work in that world's sorcery. Is there a specific qualifier for each rank, or is it just a matter of XP, as it were?

agoodmusekickin: (Bing)

[personal profile] agoodmusekickin 2012-10-18 04:00 pm (UTC)(link)
My original LJ name was ms_ntropy, which was a nick name a friend gave me in college based upon my fascination with how cancer develops. Somewhere along the line that changed to agoodshinkickin. With the logic there being: No matter how nice or helpful or awesome someone is, at some point they're going to deserve a good kick to the shins.

I made a new journal at LJ for fic and other such nerdy writings, and named that agoodmusekickin.

That's the journal on DW that I've brought over for similar reasons.
Gamewise:

[personal profile] mnt_raph, [personal profile] mnt_mike, and [personal profile] mnr_splinter are pretty self explanatory. Mutant Ninja Turtle or Rat depending. When Raph made his first entrance he was 20, so...the teenage wasn't really relevant.

[personal profile] split_your_lip is from one of my favorite Ida lines from "The Middleman".

"Don't get fresh with me missy, I'll split your lip."
Fun fact, her name was almost donttellmeitsraining.

[personal profile] v_knidh8er The Loompas don't like Vermicious Knids. They just don't. Wicked bad, those Knids.

[personal profile] 12goingon113 I'm kind of proud of this username for Aang. Not quite sure why, but I totally am. It, like most of my username choices, is pretty self explanatory, but on the off chance you're not familiar with the canon:

Aang gets frozen in a block of ice for 100 years at the age of twelve.
Yeah, you read that right: One Hundred Years.
Suck it, Cap!

[personal profile] abitofawildman Is the first description we get of adult Bumi in canon. "Bit of a wild man, but the bravest commander you'll ever meet."

For those who haven't seen Korra: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYd9Tbei1FM Here, have Bumi's first....and only to date, appearance. BROTHERLY LOVE!

For this journal: At the time I joined LJ, I was (I still am, technically, though the associated game is dormant) playing a green dragonrider a la Anne McCaffrey's Pern series on a MU*. One of this lady's nicknames courtesy her then-weyrmate was greenie. Chanter is a name I've been using online since 1998 or 1999 or so, intended as a world music reference - it's still valid today, bigtime world music geek here. Combine the two, and bingo! As far as the MU* being dormant, Alina and hers are still in my life, as they're still in my head, so I keep the name as is.

For Sariel: [personal profile] visible_sariel is a reference to the fact that throughout canon, she's all but invisible to most people, even when she's abducted and rescued. It's also intended to show that through Milliways, she gets the opportunity to have a further life and story of her own.
newredshoes: possum, "How embarrassing!" (<3 | modern communication)

Aw, Chanter, I love your answers!

'I got low. I put a bullet in my mouth, and the Other Guy spit it out.'

I will admit, the word-nerd in me twitches that he didn't say 'spat it out', but it was still a great moment in the movie.
not_my_sandbox: Cthulu's little brother? (gatekeeper)

[personal profile] not_my_sandbox 2012-10-18 04:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a long convoluted history with personal internet handles. I never was a chatty person, and I still am not, so there was no need for me to keep a persistent identity. The ones that have stuck with me the longest are the email that my first university stuck me with and "not_me". It wasn't on LJ or anything, it was on a chaotic little html and css enabled chatroom, which incidentally is where I started learning html from as people started to aggressively find ways to cover up each other's text by overlaying things with like goatse or abusing font size property and putting !important everywhere possible.

So much stupid fun.

So inspired by that and also my problems with maintaining a persistent identity (and also because I was playing around with the idea of throwing pups into sandboxes with this account), [personal profile] not_my_sandbox was created.

[personal profile] death_gone_mad is inspired by a song by Garbage that resonated for Amascut. It is also inspired by some headcanon that say the destruction caused by the other gods and their followers will guarantee the world will never be free of her influence. AmascutCares, which started out as a secondary AIM account and is now my primary, was inspired by a friend online who tended toward the trollish/chaotic evil, mostly because her own life was so full of chaos. I don't really know why I attract those types of people, but it's fun. sometimes. heartbreaking, too.

[personal profile] fowl_beast got his name because he is a beastly chicken, but mostly it is a reference to Warcraft III and Prince Arthas constant shouts of "FOUL BEAST!" during battle. The AIM handle Bragolcoireion is a fuax-elvish name that resulted from typing in Evil Chicken or something like that in the Barrow-Downs Name generator

My account for runescape NPC's [personal profile] myriadbeautiful came from a line in the game about the state of the would in the Early Second Age, before everything fell to pieces (incidentally, before Amascut was driven insane, too).
Myriad and beautiful were the creatures and civilizations of the early ages of the world. Gielinor was a work of art, shaped lovingly over the millennia by the creative mind of Guthix. Only the sturdiest races survived the Godwars, and even then only by abandoning their high culture and gearing their societies towards war. Of the more delicate races there is now no trace, and almost no memory.
sdelmonte: (DC Fanboy)

My name...has a long story. Once upon a time, when comic books all had letter columns, I had a letter published in pages of the second Firestorm series. That was cool. What was not cool was the phone call I got from a black sheep cousin congratulating me. My mom freaked. And said I couldn't have any more letters published. So I came up with a pseudonym, Simon DelMonte, derived from the name of a girl I knew (don't ask me why - I thought her name was cool, I guess), and starting using it on myriad letters to the comics. A lot which were printed. (BTW, DC and Marvel really didn't like pseudonyms, even though the most famous letterhack of the 70s and 80s was the late, great TM Maple.)

When the Internet arrived, my first objective was to interact with other DC Comics fans in the AOL-managed chatrooms. And it only made sense to use the name that I was known under. By and large, I still use my Simon DelMonte name for postings pretty much everywhere, in part because I've used it since the 80s, in part to maintain a bit of anonymity. The fact that social media sites are idiotic about such things is why I don't use Facebook (and why I am nor surprised how undersuccessful Google+ has been).

As for my pups...

Gibbs is pirate_gibbs in part because it's obvious, in part because Aspen called Jack Sparrow pirate_jack.

Cyborg is says_the_booyah as a reference to a slightly misquoted line from Starfire on the cartoon: "who will shout the booyah?"

Kirk once famously said "I'm from Iowa. I only work in space." Thus works_in_space.

Knox is gotham_knocking because he's from Gotham and his name is Knox. (I was not good at naming my pups back then.)

Howard Stark is thefirststark since he's from Captain America: The First Avenger.

And CharlieQuestion died in the course of the DC comic 52. So instead of being in a game of 52 Pick-Up, he was a 52_dropoff. (Honestly, I should have changed that one when we moved to DW.)

(Oh, and I have a Mixed Muses name I like. The Doctor from Star Trek: Voyager is notadoorstep, a reference to his McCoy-like lament of being used to stall the Borg in Star Trek: First Contact.)

[personal profile] waco_jim is simple. His name's Jim and he's the Waco Kid. If I were apping him now, I'd probably go with something like "letsplaychess" or something like that.

[personal profile] fromtheoldcountry is another easy one. Borgel comes from the Old Country. After he left, he used to live in the Old Apartment in the Old Building, in the Old Neighborhood. But then the Old Building burned down, and he moved in with the Spellbound family.

[personal profile] janisthorn is named after one of Leela's weapons of choice, which she fires out of a blowgun. In her words, a janis thorn paralyzes, then kills. And that's exactly what she'll do to you if you're not careful.

[personal profile] closesecond is named after a line of dialogue from Tiberian Sun. "You're not God, Kane!" "No, I'm not God. But I'm a close second."

[personal profile] notyetwritten is also taken from a line of dialogue in canon ("...perhaps the ending has not yet been written"). Specifically, it's from the intro to the first Myst game. The screenname pretty much had to reference writing, given the importance of writing to the D'niverse.

My retired pup John McCabe had the user name [personal profile] gotpoetryinme. This is taken from another line in canon, which he mutters to himself while talking about how he feels about Constance. It was one that pretty much encapsulated the "He's secretly a pathetic romantic" aspect of his character pretty well.

There's another pup I might be apping next month with the user name of [personal profile] el_feo. See if you can guess who this is supposed to be without peeking.
