DE: Understudies

It's Friday people! We made it through another week despite work and Slender Man's best efforts! Loving all the plots btw.

Anyway a couple of questions of my own today. First, who have you thought of playing but never did? And second, do you have any actors or models or whatever that you've seen icons for that made you wish you had the right character, just so you could use them?

Two pups I've never played, even in a sandbox, are Captain Beka Rosslin-Metadi who is from a space opera series (It starts with, not!Alderran having been trashed in the prequels, not!Jedi with quarterstaffs and not!Wookies being played by lizards instead of mammals) and Joe Buckley from a harder work of science fiction (He also hasn't died yet in the first two books, a special situation for a character named Joe Buckley in a series published by Baen).

I apped Doc Brown but never played him. I have dabbled with the Doctor from ST: Voyager in Mixed Muses for quite some time. I toyed with Jim Gordon, the Riddler and Alfred from the old comics continuity.

Thought of playing but never did:

Commissar Ciaphas Cain, HERO OF THE IMPERIUM (Warhammer 40k)
Trooper Ferik Jurgen, the filthiest, smelliest soldier in the Imperium of Man (NB: the Imperium has a population of trillions, so this is a Stench of Legend) and a psychic blank powerful enough to cause artifacts and Daemon Princes of Chaos to stop working in any way whatsoever merely by his presence- also 40k
Aeriel or Erin from Meredith Ann Pierce's Darkangel trilogy (the first book is technically a vampire novel about a girl who falls in love with an inhumanly beautiful and marble-like vampire from a family of vampires, but it was written back when I was in grade school and based on the dreams of one of Carl Jung's patients, no sparkles here)
Doctor Adoullah Makhslood from Throne of the Crescent Moon (I'd never be able to do it without fearing it was Cultural Appropriation By A White Chick territory)
Roger Maxson, from Fallout (I've RPed him elsewhere, but not at Milliways)
Constable Fuse from Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade
El Santo

Well, I apped-but-never-actually-played Karis, from Golden Sun: Dark Dawn. Technically I did give her an EP, which got tagged once and I never tagged back. And then I dropped her. (She can call up the wind, so she was able to land safely.)

Beyond that, at various times I've considered Kopaka (LEGO Bionicle), Arkantos (Age of Mythology), and Spock (Star Trek (the old one, between TNG-era and the new movie)).

...It occurs to me that my Kain Highwind voice is in some ways a combination of Kopaka and Arkantos.

Just popping in briefly before I go to clean the apartment and turn in the keys.

Like Camwyn, I considered a few Warhammer characters, in particular Commissar-Colonel Ibram Gaunt of the Tanith First and Only (also known as Gaunt's Ghosts), or his Master Sniper, "Mad" Larkin. I also have considered Felix Jaeger of the Trollslayer series; he's actually a possibility, except that where goes Felix, so goes Gotrek Gurnisson, and the Bar probably would take kindly to a psychotic Dwarf who wields a magical battle axe and is engaged in a form of ritual suicide where he tries to get killed fighting the biggest nasty he can find (he's very bad at it; he keeps winning).

Characters I've thought of but never apped: Ariana Dumbledore (darn right she'd come in pre-attack if I were going there), Captain Morgan Bateson from TNG's episode Cause and Effect, Geordi La Forge (I still <3 Gabby's Geordi), Moe Alley from Band of Brothers, the Whistler from the radio series of the same name, but that one would be a logistical headache, much as he kicks butt.

Thought of Playing:

- Simba (The Lion King)
- Lord John Roxton from Arthur Conan Doyle's The Lost World (book, not TV.) I played him a little in another game some years back, but not nearly enough.
- Rapunzel (Tangled)
- Sabrino (Harry Turtledove's Darkness
- Roza (Red Star)

I've sandboxed Dick Grayson enough that I've seriously considered cleaning out my roster to make room for him.

The question, as always with a character as heavily rebuilt and long running as Dick, is which one you would play.

Sansa Stark. I love her but her canon is far, far too bleak for me.
The Hanging Man from Tarot. Do I really need another cryptic more-symbol-than-person?
Vince Noir from The Mighty Boosh. I'm not very good at crack characters.
Smaug from The Hobbit. I'm sure you see the inherent difficulties.
Henry V. I even created a journal at one point, but decided I couldn't keep up the iambic pentameter and never apped him.
A slew of characters from Adventure Time. Though since others are going to apped soon, perhaps I'll reconsider...just have decide on who...

As for question 2, I want to use Patrick Stump for a PB at some point (I was even thinking he might make a good Hanging Man) but eh...dunno.

This entry may get edited or added to as I remember people. There's been a lot over the years.

Iambic pentameter is easy, trust me there!
Tis not so much a question of its use
But more of knowing how to stop with it
When 'tis no longer needed. It feels strange
To forcibly make Teja or tall Urq
Speak prose when for a longish round of tags
Blank verse came flowing in all eloquence
As I was playing Poins. So if you'd please
To bring Prince Hal, from any point in life,
My love, oh lady fair, would e'er be yours!

I am not actually playing my favorite character from Villains By Necessity. That would be Blackmail, and it wasn't even the fact that he doesn't talk for most of the book that tripped me up - it was my other headvoice. Cata didn't like the idea of sharing headspace with him, and then I felt like things necessitated apping Sam instead.
(That said, I would looooooove canonmates, if anyone who's actually read the thing is so inclined.)

Otherwise: I will app Rebecca one of these days... if I can find a good, consistent Jack to come along. She refuses to go anywhere without him, and I don't really blame her.

I tried to read it! I got... I'm not sure, I remember the swamp part... before the interlibrary loan people wanted it back. And then the next time I tried to get it, it turned out the library I had access to had a fee for ILLs. Now, me, I figure, I'd rather not pay for a book if I don't know I'll like it. And if I am paying, then I should have the right to keep it as long as I want.

I don't know so much about the second question, but I do have an answer for the first.

Characters I Wanted to Play at One Point, by Bing.

- Yorick Brown (Y The Last Man)

- Calamity Jane (Deadwood; Fun fact, I did play her briefly in an OOM. It's surprisingly difficult to swear that much, even for me.)

- Ursula (The Little Mermaid; There was talk one day of everyone playing a villain, and she's one of my favorites.)

- Dolores Umbridge (Harry Potter; Speaking of favorite villains. I still maintain that she's worse than Voldemort.)

- Cheery Littlebottom (Discworld; Trying to nail down dwarf culture scared me too much, so I backed off.)

- Josie McCay (Josie and the Pussycats)

- John McClane (Die Hard; His first entrance would be him falling from the ceiling.)

- Either Thelma or Louise (Thelma & Louise; their first entrance would be their car landing out by the Lake)

- Phil or Lem (Better Off Ted)

- Troy (Community)

- Chandler Bing (Friends, this was more people begging me to do so, rather than something I would have come up with on my own)

- John Rambo (First Blood; My roommate was going to come in as the General, and try to convince people that they shouldn't do things because, "John Rambo doesn't like that.")

- Bruce Banner (The Avengers; SO GLAD I never app'd him, because our Bruce Banner is too awesome for words.)

- Tenzin (Legend of Korra; Same thing as above. What the hell was I thinking?)

Other characters I have considered:

Erronius, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum: Actually apped him, hardest app I've ever written, and then I could never figure out what to do with him.

Oblio, The Point: First, I'd need Arrow. Second, I've never been able to picture it beyond "Is this still the Pointless Forest?"

For some I picked up another pup from canon; some were/are being played, and it's probably good. I wouldn't have been terribly good at them. Some I sandboxed, I am not keeping track right now.

- Garion, Poledra, Eriond (Belgariad cycle; the latter may happen)
- Sextus, Septimus, Araris (Alera)
- Arwen, Samwise, Faramir, Aragorn (LotR)
- Sam Vimes (Sr.), Susan Sto Helit (Discworld)
- Morwen, Cimorene, Mendanbar, Daystar
- Selina Kyle, Kara Zor-El (DCU)
- Aqua, Xion, Roxas, Ventus (Kingdom Hearts)
- Susan Ivanova (Babylon 5)
- Elizabeth Bennet, Fitzwilliam Darcy (P&P)
- Uther Pendragon (Merlin)
- Merlin, mebbe Arthur (Mary Stewart's cycle)
- George Cooper, Bekah Cooper, Keladry of Mindelan (Tortall - I swear the latter will happen one day)
- Evie (Circle of Magic--well, The Circle Opens)
- Zelda - probably Twilight Princess incarnation, though at the time Skyward wasn't out
- Luffy (One Piece)
- Karrin Murphy (Dresden Files)
- Bob Howard, Angleton (Stross' Laundry Files)
- Lightning (Final Fantasy XIII/XIII-2)
- Stephen Bartowski (Chuck - Then canon Jossed me)
- Wash (Firefly)
- Takua/Takanuva, Hahli, Jaller, the Toa Mata/Nuva (Bionicle)

I'm sure I'm forgetting some.

There aren't too many I've set my mind to apping but then didn't.

The first was Rael from Genesis's incomprehensible concept album The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. My thought process was - hey, it's cracky enough, why not do it? Then I realized there are about a million billion reasons why not.

I also thought about apping Harmonica from Once Upon a Time in the West. Nearly did it, too. Thing is, though, there isn't really that much to his character apart from "stoic badass."

I also keep vacillating on whether or not to app Caius Cosades from Morrowind. I may or may not do this.

I'm not sure! I mean, I know I have pondered characters and not apped them. I've even pondered some seriously and eventually regretfully decided I didn't have the time or couldn't do justice to them or didn't want the headaches of an ongoing canon or that it'd only be fun with a good [canonmate] or whatever. It's just that, after I've set the idea firmly aside, I never remember what it was. At least not on cue.

A couple that I can think of:

- Ael i-Mheissan t'Rllaillieu from Diane Duane's Rihannsu series, and a more Diane Duane name I defy you to find. [Edited because, oops, I switched her second and third names. That puts a dent in my pride for remembering how to spell them...] I opted against it because a) I wasn't sure I could do justice to her, and b) there are Star Trek characters who aren't from her AU in the bar and that would be problematic levels of weird for her, and c) I would have had to do a lot of juggling to safeguard against changing canon. (And I didn't want to go AU from canon, or to play her post-canon.) But mostly I wasn't sure I could do justice to her.

- Cable/Nathan Summers/etc, in the way where I have sandboxed him against Jo's Deadpool and it was WAY TOO MUCH FUN. But a) we already have a Cable, so obviously no, and b) even if we didn't, playing him in anything but a sandbox requires waaaaay more complicated continuity and ongoing canon than I am willing or able to deal with. The only way I could do it in sandbox was because Cable & Deadpool allows for a vague lampshade-y attitude towards outside continuity anyway.

- Spock. Again, I think we already have one, or did when I was pondering it (do we still?), but in any case I decided that my roster of Stoic Inscrutable Observant People was already awfully full, and didn't really need the redundancy of yet another addition.

I can think of a couple of others I've sandboxed or NPCed with no desire to play them for more than a specific thread or two, but that's it for the serious ponderment I can recall. Though I know there have been others.

Similarly, I don't tend to notice actors or models or whatever, but I have a couple of times noticed someone and thought "Wow, great expressions! They'd make a great PB for someone, but I don't know who!" And then promptly forgot them, so... unhelpful!

I have never, for whatever it may be worth, been aware of us having a Spock in the present tense. He seems like the kind of character who would have been around at some point, and I may have even seen something from one of the other Trekpups alluding to him being around, but as far as I recall he's never there when I've been paying attention.

I know I've occasionally made no secret of contemplating playing a Spock; possibly that's a thing that put you off?

I did have Samuel Beckett from Quantum Leap in for a while, but I never quite got the hang of him. Likewise with Remus, sort of. He comes and goes. And Todd Anderson (Dead Poet's Society), though I might still app him. I just haven't gotten around to it.

I can't think of any more right now, but that's mostly because allergies are messing with me.

Reverend Hale, The Crucible

... And, perhaps taking the cake of "Merc loves random obscure ladies," I really love Penny from The Singles' Club: Pull Shapes in the Phonogram series. She makes magic! By dancing! Do we see why I dig it??
