Weekend Entertainment

And to think four hours ago I was totally committed to going to bed at a decent hour for once.

THAT WAS BEFORE MY OTPS ATTACKED.

This weekend's DE is brought to you by [personal profile] max_epper:

Icons, where do people find them? Share your resources, people!

Depending on subject, I usually just make them, Which explains why the bulk of my icons are just "shrink-crop" jobs. I'll hit up Google Images or Getty Images and do a bulk search for Breckin Meyer/Jason Statham/Dominick Lombardozzi/Michael Chiklis/George Takei/Mary Pat Gleason and just kind of go from there.

The Loompas are a still from the animated music video of Korn's "Freak On A Leash" done by comic artist Todd McFarlane...and random shots of children that I've painted orange and green.
Why no, I do not in fact have shame. Why do you ask?

Bumi and Aang are mostly borrowed from either fan art that I ask permission to "shrink-crop" or from other players, who I then give credit to.

I either make them from existing images from google or getty, in the shrink-crop way (often with some recoloring for Yrael), or find them online at icon journals or places like Hollow Art.

I think I need to check out this Getty folks are talking about.

For myself, if I am coming from a visual canon (comic, tv, movie etc.), I'll usually look for fan groups on LJ or DW or hit Tumblr. Tumblr is dangerous though as you can end up with so many images to work from.

For PBs, I like Hollow Art though they can be a challenge as they have so many icon of people. Their attribute tags are helpful but I have yet to figure out how to search with more than one.

I also like embargo and pb_updates on insane journal though they tend to have younger faces so for older, past 30, I hit up Hollow Art. Embargo and pb_updates are nice as they have directories with thumbnails that aren't 20+ pages long. = ]

I know I have more icon groups bookmarked but they are on my work machine and I am at home.

Fan comms or I make them myself, from screencaps or pictures I snag from Google Images.

Hollow Art, Google Image search if I'm looking for images of a thing versus a person but I've also found good images of PBs out there as well. Sometimes I search for movie screencaps and make icons from them when the fan comms aren't iconning what I need. I did that for Jane and William.

[profile] iconaddicts sometimes has good stuff. They tend to have popular fandoms and pretty stuff.

[personal profile] sunlitdays makes beautiful stock icons and coupley icons and a few fan comms as well.

Google is my friend, though for novalized characters it's a little harder. I'm still not %100, not even $50 happy with Skysong's icons. I wish I could've found a dragon that looks the same, just has different colored scales.

www.deviantart.com/ is my other go-to. When I'm thinking about it I put the creator somewhere in the info if I use them though.

I make most of my icons myself because I'm stupidly finicky about coloring and because it's usually easier than tracking down the perfect icon of whatever specific scene I have in mind.

For Mary, I've mostly been using caps from Grande-Caps or official promo images, which are readily available from Google Images.

Carol's are mostly from my own scans or from other people's scans posted on Tumblr. At least one is from [livejournal.com profile] icons_of_isis who makes nice Marvel and other fandom icons.

I usually screencap and make my own, unless I don't have access to canon or am in a hurry, in which case I use Hallow Art or dig around various LJ icon makers. I'll very occasionally make icons from stock photos, but not that often.
cameoflage: Ozymandias from Watchmen, as a chibi, singing "Never Gonna Give You Up". Bubastis is there too. (Ozymandias rickroll)

I have a massive array of Insanejournal icon journals and communities that I hit up for PB-icons. Some of them are flocked, but I'm a member of basically all of them. If I'm browsing for a PB, I'll go to Hollow Art, [insanejournal.com profile] embargo (a flocked community, but I believe they have open membership?), or [insanejournal.com profile] pb_updates (which has the best selection I've seen). If I have one in mind already, I go directly to [insanejournal.com profile] find_icons and [insanejournal.com profile] wikicon. If I don't know where to start and/or want somebody with an uncommon combination of common attributes (since most places can't search for multiple tags at once and only a handful of places use tags for combinations of attributes) I take it to [insanejournal.com profile] find_a_pb. They're often helpful, though their success rate is not 100%.

Sometimes I end up modifying the icons, because my character has some odd but photoshoppable feature (weird hair colours, weird eye colours, the occasional Homestuck troll). Once in a while I make my own due to scarce coverage by the rest of the icon-o-sphere. (This is how I ended up churning out large batches of Neil Gaiman icons on an irregular but recurring basis.) The best way to get material seems to be finding a fan Tumblr for the person in question and ganking all their photos. Or at least that's the best method I know, it seems uncommon among dedicated iconmakers.

I have no goddamned clue where to find good icons of anything other than live-action stuff. Honestly I would like some pointers on this. I do tend to make my own icons of webcomic characters, though, because I am a dab hand with GIMP's cropping and resizing capacities and the pictures are right there.

I've had to make a number of mine (that's what happens when you play some vaguely obscure pups). Your best bet is to either go to hollow-art, pb_updates, or to search livejournal with (name of your canon) COMMA icons.
