Sunday Indulgences

Hooray for the weekend!

I can't tell if I'm up far too early or way too late.
At least I can count on you guys to bring the awesome, night or day.
So, hit me.
What have you been up to, Milliways?

OMG IT'S A FINISHED SLOWTIME, GET IN THE CAR: Kate and Tommy have a snowball fight.

Who knew Tommy and General Ackbar had so much in common?

(This thread was so much fun, thank you!)

Poins was so much fun this week!

I did an happy hour with him last Thursday (the threads of which extended well into this week, so I feel justified pimping it now) which had some priceless threads -- especially the ones with Shufti and the Author. Shufti tried to explain why he should wear condoms, which went down extremely not well and had an aftermath.

Then, Prince Hal arrived at Milliways, with Poins following right behind, and they were as boisterous as could expected.

Furthermore, it turns out Poins as a Shakespearean character has reference points for the idea of 'fool' that the Fool can really relate to...

Also, Poins was hungover and made lengthy war metaphors at the Author.

Finally, Loki confuses Poins with bare feet and a hidden snake -- not what you think!!

I snorted tea at the mention of "prick stockings". That whole thread was hilarious. Well played, both of you.
yakalskovich: (We are being dramatic)

Oh, I am sorry for ruining your tea; that wasn't my intention!

Oh good!

I don't know if it's finished, but in the thread that never ends (<3), Autor and the Fool discuss subjective language and the symbolic uses of napkins, perform a Tarot reading, and over-think the meaning of friendship. Then, to top it all off, the Fool ambushes Autor with a puppy. The poor kid will never be the same.

After that (or perhaps before; time is tricky when dealing with the Fool), Autor--despite knowing nothing of women and even less of innuendo--offers (unsolicited) advice to Prince Hal on how to woo high-born ladies. Specifically, the future king's future wife, the French princess Catherine of Valois.

The Fool likes him. This is a good thing.

Possibly.

Autor is still surprised by this, even after all of Alexander's pretty turns of phrase.

The Fool knows this due to his built-in lie detector.

I like to say that part of being the Fool requires him to have no taste. Make of that as you will, dear Autor.

[personal profile] herr_bookman 2013-01-21 07:19 am (UTC)(link)
Oh? If that's the case, then wouldn't his part require him to have all tastes as well?

I must say I'm a bit surprised. I would have thought that, as a knowledge-seeker, he wouldn't dream of allowing himself the luxury of a limited palette.

By having no taste he doesn't bar himself from trying anything because nothing is below him. Everything's a good idea.

Touché. Though it does deconstruct the 0 of his nature. Beginnings and endings, everything and nothing.

Knowledge and not knowing any better, which I still haven't wrapped my head around.

From what I've always though the Tarot and their cards are all about dualities in a way. The cards embody two of the same things. Tower is about destruction, but destruction allows the way for a new beginning. The Fool is about seeking knowledge and every time you learn something, you realize there's even more you don't know. So, round and round and round you go.

[personal profile] herr_bookman 2013-01-21 07:41 am (UTC)(link)
That all makes quite a bit of sense.

Its been a strange but good week. Work as always is busy but slowly coming together and I'm finally getting some final moving stuff done. I also have a nice long weekend in which I hope to do more house set up.

Ficwise, I didn't write as much this week as I did last week, but I did write one fic. Being Respectable, a post-canon AU Becoming Jane fic.

In terms of RP, I haven't been too busy, but had some nice threads.

William and Ellen and Marie were sweet and sad. I love this friendship. He also met Enjorlas and discussed how being dead in Milliways is strange.

Charles and Raven are being adorable together. I've missed these two a lot. Its from the end of last week but I'm mentioning it because some of threads only just now have finished up; Charles had an EP. The strangest thread was the one with Urquhart, it took some mental bending to have Charles talk with Urquhart about Moist.

I had two interviews for graduate jobs! They went okay, I think, but I won't know until I get told whether I'm through to the second round of interviews or not.

In RP terms, Max Epper has an EP and OOM that's still open.

I think I'm also close to finishing up a bunch of Bean OOMs.

I've been rather slack on the slows recently, partially due to the aforementioned interviews.

On another note, I did this: http://ways-back-room.dreamwidth.org/5016605.html?thread=72740125#cmt72740125 In which I calculate the possibilities of a fan based jetpack.

[personal profile] herr_bookman 2013-01-21 07:21 am (UTC)(link)
That jetpack math is amazing. Good show.

A+ Bean OOMs as well.
jjprobert: (Avengers)

[personal profile] jjprobert 2013-01-21 12:39 pm (UTC)(link)
The next step on the Jetpack stuff, is to extend it to 'Helicarrier' sized stuff...

So, 4 fans, with blades ~pi meters deep, ~15 meters in radius (I'll call it 100/2pi to make the maths easier) then, at 3 rotations a second and 6 blades a propeller, we get:

Force produced by a fan = (pi x density of air/2) x (radius of propeller x depth of propeller x rotation speed x number of blades on the prop shaft)^2

Force from one of these fans = (pi x 0.6125) x ((100/2pi) x pi x 3 x 6)^2 = 1.56MN

So, 4 such fans could lift a 600 metric ton ship. Unfortunately, the USS Nimtz class, which appears to be the closest match I can find, is 100,000 metric tons

Okay, I'll stop doing this now!

Also, glad you liked the Bean OOMs. :)
