Danny Williams, haole_cop: A lot of Danny's character arc in the first season is about how he sticks out as a haole (non-native). He wears ties, loafers, hates the beach, and generally embraces looking like a mainlander. He's the "haole cop" to a bunch of the perps and his own precinct, so it's a neatly descriptive name.

Caspian X, the_seafarer: Caspian is known as "The Seafarer" or "The Navigator" in the same way Peter's known as "The Magnificent."

Emma Swan, notinthebook: In the pilot episode of OUaT, Mary Margaret asks Emma who Henry thinks she is, to which Emma responds "I'm not in the book." It fits her sense of skepticism and status as an outsider.

Jack Twist, jack_f_twist: Jack is referred to as "Jack fuckin' Twist" multiple times through the story/movie.

Nicholas D. Wolfwood, fullofmercy: Wolfwood always carries the Punisher, a metal cross wrapped in cloth. He carries it himself, but in his first appearance, it takes four men to hoist the thing. When asked why it's so heavy, his reply is: "Because it's so full of mercy."

Wherein here I guess 'mercy' means 'guns and rockets,' but close enough, right?

I always like this one and a good distraction as just seeing my main boss today sent my hackles up. I will find a better job, a place where they appreciate what I do. Sorry for all the edits.

Mine ceitfianna: I created this one about eleven years ago. Ceit is the Scots Gaelic spelling for Kate, one of the few languages that has Kate as a name on its own not just as a nickname. Fianna is the name of the legendary Irish warriors as well as related to the World of Darkness Werewolf tribe. I thought it sounded pretty and combined them. If I could think of something else I might end up changing it but I don't know. Its become an online identity for me.

Will Scarlett will_scarlett: His name, because I didn't realize that usernames could be more than that in RP.

Charles Xavier balancingminds: This was one of those happy accidents. I was having trouble finding a good username as most of the more well known ones for him were taken. So I started experimenting and this one happened and its perfect. He's a character who lives his life around the idea of balance. Balance of his thoughts and others, balance between mutants and the rest of humanity and just balance in general.

Demeter wheatencrown: In many pieces of ancient art, Demeter is portrayed as wearing a crown made out of wheat. That's where this one came from.

Sameth makesthings: This is from a canon quote where Sam says that all he's really good at is making things. I'm still surprised no one had taken this username.

William Evans not_his_pa: William defines himself around his father and this was one of the easier usernames for me to think of and it fully fits him.

Moist von Lipwig morethanprops: This was another case of I couldn't get the exact username I wanted but ended up finding something I liked. Moist refers to his props as furniture but he doesn't rely on them instead what he does is more than that. I keep debating trying to find another username for him, but this one fits.

Jane Austen janebecomes: Her canon is called Becoming Jane and I just fiddled with the title to get the username.

Tumnus friend_of_lucy: Chat helped me come up with this one as I was stuck for a username and Bethan suggested this one and I love it. Its really how he thinks of himself in terms of the Pevensies, he's Lucy's friend, he might become other things but he's that first.

The Pirate King agloriousthing: Another canon quotes, because its a glorious thing to be a pirate king.

Bonus Tiwa piwakawaka: Her username is the Maori name of the kind of bird she is a fantail. The name comes from what their song sounds like.

turned_captain he name is Turner! He is now a captain! His user name used to be Turning Pirate, but when his story reached his end it went to past tense, and technically Will is not currently doing piracy.

Personally, I've always tried to give characters user names that concievably they could choose for themselves. Ish. Maybe.

Joshua Donovan: damncompass: Well... his life completely changed because of that damn compass. For amusing bonus: There's a deleted scene on the W13 DVD with Claud saying to Artie "Now get over it and see the damn compass" or something like that. I feel vindicated.

Helena Wells: timelessinventor: For Helena, I wanted something that would work both for historical Helena and for modern Helena, because I knew I was going to be working with both. The timeless part is, well, she's a Victorian woman with her head in the future, but she's also a modern woman with her head in the past. She's more than both or either. Inventor came from Helena herself, because she invents both physical things, and the ideas that go into her books.

Orion Black: thequietblack: He's the quiet one. In actualfax Potter canon, you know shitall about him. He's just Sirius and Regulus' father. In my headcanon for him, he's much more apt to sit back and watch things happen than get involved.

Quinn: quinby: My own username comes originally from my first character in my first RPG: Quinby. We ended up going by our character names quite a lot in that game, so I was just Quinby to everyone and it stuck. Now, most of my usernames are Quiverby (a nickname from Quinby that I kinda like) but my journal's still just Quinby. (I think I somewhat got the name from the Ramona Quimby books. I've signed my name with a smiley face in the Q as long as I've legally signed things, and that came from that book.)

Jack West's, againsttherules is from a canon quote about a method some of his opponents are employing to bypass a major trap. It's a marker about how Jack does things the 'right' way, you don't just bypass the traps, you beat them by being sufficiently precise and fast enough to get through before the trap completes.

Max's, max_epper is just his name. Very boring.

Erik's, ask_the_right_questions is a slight bastardization of a canon quote from Thor: "It's not a bad thing, finding out you don't have all the answers. You start asking the right questions"

Bean's, aintwortha is another quote from canon about Bean as a very young kid: "He ain't worth a bean."

Alfred is the original battlebutler, so when I realized it was free, I couldn't not, could I?

acts_of_gord: I was having some trouble thinking of a decent journal name for Gordon back when I first wanted to play him. There's a web site called Acts of Gord about the adventures of a Canadian video game store owner who doesn't put up with crap from his customers. I was quite fond of it at the time and figured I'd borrow the name; it seems to have worked.

hecu_marine: Adrian's original journal name was remindmeof_me as a reference to something the G-Man says towards the end of HL: Opposing Force. 'remindmeofmyself', which would have quoted him accurately, didn't fit. When we moved to DW I didn't really like the reference any more, and figured that since Adrian had proven over the time I played him that the most important parts of his identity were his service affiliation and the unit whose actions he felt he had to atone for, his journal name should reflect that.

aaaaaaaagh_sky: The Vault Dweller spends the first nineteen years of his or her life underground, with a ceiling never more than thirty feet overhead (Vault 101's atrium is the biggest room in the Vault and I think it has three levels at most). When I first played Fallout 3 I realized that this character was going to be SEVERELY agoraphobic for a good while- and when I was getting used to the controls on my Xbox I liked to spin the camera around in circles and say the character was screaming in panic at how far away and huge everything was. Hence, aaaaaaaagh_sky.

igetthatalot: From a bit of banter Varric has in canon:

Anders: Are you sure you want to encourage me? I might be about to confess my undying love.
Varric: I get that a lot. So what's on your mind?

pattersongs: Ninety percent of Mordin Solus RP journals are some kind of reference to his performance of Gilbert and Sullivan's "Scientist Salarian" in ME2. I just stepped back a few paces during the conversation that gives rise to the musical number and reffed the line where he said that in G&S he tended to perform the patter songs.

hands_of_blu: Medic wears blue rubber gloves that go up to his elbows, and is about as ethical in his science and medicine as the Hands of Blue in Firefly. So, yeah.

el_enmascarado_de_plata: Santo's full wrestling name is Santo, el Enmascarado de Plata- Saint, the Man in the Silver Mask. Which he is.

camwyn: I've been using Camwyn as a form of user name since about two days after I got a dialup modem, as that's roughly how long it took me to find a BBS that asked you to create a user name rather than using your initials. Camwyn was a tertiary background character in the Deed of Paksenarrion novels who was affiliated with dragons, and the board had a dragon theme, so I went with that. It's worked pretty well as a user name for me ever since.

Mine (withherhands) is from Proverbs 31:13, She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands. Even though my religious beliefs are...undefined at the moment, I've always liked that section, particularly as it explicitly mentions the ideal woman using a spindle. It seemed appropriate as I love knitting, spinning and writing, and I do (or did, ugh life getting in the way) a lot of handwritten fic with my beloved fountain pens. I like descriptive usernames and that one seemed to fit. :D

Jack's (trigger_man) was actually created for an AU RPG ages ago, where it was probably more explicitly applicable, but when I wanted to reboot Jack, it came in handy and still seemed applicable in more than one way. It fits as Jack shoots a lot of people over the course of the series, but I also thought it fit as Jack's actions--sometimes his presence--provides a "trigger" for a number of events in the series.

M's (m_is_for) I decided on after some thought, because again, it works in more than one way. There's the part where the letter-title "M" is actually in her name (from Bond's line "I always thought M was a randomly assigned initial, I had no idea it stood for...") though we never learn her name in the movies. :D It also works as a reflection of the titles and the identities projected on her by others ("M", Bond and Silva calling her "bitch" and "mother", respectively, and there's "Evil Queen of Numbers" if you want to go back into the Brosnan years), and I knew that playing her was going to involve some exploration of identity. And then there's the idea of what she "stands for", what she supports and is willing to die for, namely Queen and country. :D

They are all the first usernames I seriously considered. (Like I offered in my journal a couple of days ago, if you want help coming up with a username and I know the canon, I'll be happy to tell you the first thing that comes to mind.)

venusadept_2 is the second playable Venus Adept in his canon. (Not actually the second one you see, assuming his father and Isaac's parents are also Venuses, but definitely the second you can play if you go through in order.)

needs_fern is, like (though independent of) no_vampires_plz, a reference to another canon. Specifically, it is a reference to Dorothy in Rune Factory 2, a shy girl who is never seen without her stuffed (probably)kangaroo, Fern. First-season Fluttershy reminded me quite a lot of Dorothy.

magnetic_hair is technically a recursive reference. His replacement toupee (the "Dreamboat Special") is strikingly similar to the hair of the river serpent that the fans named Steven Magnet.

baron_dragoon is, simply, the head of the Dragoon Corps of the Kingdom of Baron.

kd7sov is my amateur radio callsign. I don't actually use it for radio much.

And, for those that I'm considering but haven't made journals for:

no_slow_toe (G1 MLP: Wind Whistler) is a reference a couple of times removed. Specifically: Wind Whistler -> whistle up a wind -> Pecos Bill -> tornado travel -> the Golden Chief from Zelda: Phantom Hourglass -> Golden Chief's name for Link ("Slow-toe child").

the_final_coppermind (Mistborn: Sazed) follows Sanderson's original, abandoned naming scheme for the series. It also hearkens back to (SPOILER) the fact that come book 3 he's the last known Keeper (/SPOILER).

If the player gives Mia a chance to pick what they make, she chooses to sculpt a gorgon that she proceeds to coo over. Nash responds, "I never knew you had such a fondness for monsters."

pullsneedles: Lucas's main motivation in Mother 3 is to pull the seven Needles keeping the Dark Dragon asleep under the Nowhere Islands. Only one other person in the world can do this, making it a pretty significant ability.

knightoftheswan: When I got back into Princess Tutu, the name of the Knight's sword caught my attention, so I started looking up information on it. (This is what eventually motivated me to make a journal for him at all.) In Arthurian Legend and the opera sharing his name, Lohengrin makes his arrival in Brabant in a boat drawn by a swan. Because his powers come from the Holy Grail, he must keep his identity and connection to the Grail hidden from profane eyes. Since they can't call him by his name, he's given the title the Knight of the Swan.

rememberswhy: Superman Returns!Lois: A) she apparently doesn't remember the Super Secret (TM) and possibly not how Jason was conceived; B) Perry tells her no one will remember WHY she won her Pulitzer (editorial being an angry ex at Supes, basically), just that she won it--but she clearly disagrees and will always remember. Double meaning.
solisfilium: Jason, because born under Sol and also his dad is sun-powered alien Jesus. Also Latin is pretty.

Lastly, my own: back on LJ it was flytrue in reference to Zoe's line at the end of Serenity. My current one, inlovewithwords was originally intended for Superman: Earth One!Lois, because Perry remarks that he cut a paragraph from an article just because she liked it too much--she's too much in love with the words. ...And then I fell in love with that and appropriated it, because it just fits.

Ben Grimm, ever_lovin : It's one of Ben's self chosen epithets. Some others are "the idol of millions" (which I've used for a female version) and "Aunt Petunia's favorit nephew" but I really like ever lovin', blue-eyed Thing. It just has a nice ring to it.

Valeria von Doom, time_dancer : Val calls her teleportation ability time dancing so I figured I'd get away from her name which I had used over on LJ. It was only after I had made the new journal and paid the $15 that I remembered Tyler-mun's suggestion of quantum ballerina, which I likely will still use for a t-minus if I ever get to her having one.

Jessica Drew, justdyedit : Comes from Spider-Woman: Origins. After she singlehandedly destroys a HYDRA base, she disappears for two years. Neither HYDRA or S.H.E.I.L.D. can find her. When Fury finally does catch up to her, he mentions this and how impressed he is and how nothing impresses him anymore. She replies, "Yeah, well, I dyed my hair." The panel in questions is here.

Hank McCoy, no_more_hiding : I had first used to_be_proud for Hank to hint at the struggle he has/will have being a mutant but I felt that was too close to Raven/Mystique's, so I went for no_more_hiding as he will be forced out of hiding and need to either rise to the occasion or fold. It's also one of the last, truly tender things Raven said to him.

Thalia Grace, chameno_koritsi : It's modern Greek for lost girl which she and the Hunters really are, in the Neverland sense I mean.

Andrea Nash, masterofgunfu : In her canon, she is the best at guns.

Anton Gorodetsky, melomancer : One of the things I love about Anton is how he uses music as a divination tool. I had first thought of phonomancer but that of course was taken. Looking into Greek roots though I came across melo which is song and that fit much better.

Quinlan "Korvas" Vos, the_force_abides : When I first started looking into playing Quin I had trouble seeing the puzzle that was him. I'd read the books and loved the character but I just couldn't grok the person. Then I somehow connected him as the Star Wars Lebowski and it clicked, thus the_force_abides as a hint of the_dude_abides. I still haven't decided if he needs to discover white russian yet. I am sure Katya would be scandalized if he did.

And as to myself: bjornwilde Is both a reminder that while I live in a civilized world, I don't have to be so domesticated and is an aspiration to be like Oscar Wilde in writing.

ninjafrycook When we first meet Sam LaCroix, our young bumbling necromancer from Hold Me CLoser Necromancer, he works at a burger joint called Plumpy's and like most fast food employees, he ended up with something like a call sign to try and help him feel better about his job; thus ninja fry cook.

woman_of_valor I first created this account for Big Barda but decided I didn't really have her voice so it sat fallow until Mulan came around. I like it as it is simple and honest, which fits Mulan.

defiantsheriff Nolan's (from Syfy's Defiance) account. He becomes the sheriff of the town of Defiance which named itself after a multi-racial group of soldiers who were fighting during the Pale Wars but laid down their arms to help surivers of a disaster in San Francisco, despite direct orders. Nolan happened to be one of those who laid down his arms.

metaphysician Dr. Strange is a metaphysician, a play on both metaphysics and physician. To be honest he/she was a surgeon more than a physician but metasurgeon doesn't sound as nice.

me: Waaaaaaay back when I wrangled an LJ code, I figured my usual Internet standby (Cimorene) would be long gone without numbers and didn't feel like tacking numbers on it. So I looked around for something new - wisely, I now think, avoiding my fandoms of the moment - and my eyes lit on a CD copy of Hermit of Mink Hollow I'd just gotten. I love Todd Rundgren and that's pretty much never going to change, so I figured I couldn't go wrong with that. (This is why my sandbox journal is hermit_of.)

dark_dancer: From a canon line of Sam waxing poetic about Cata. Her journal was post_whitewash on LJ, because that was all I could think of at the time, but it lost its shine and I took advantage of the move to change it.

never_misses: Canon. Sam is so good with the projectiles that people used to ask, and probably do again now that Mizzamir's a non-factor, for 'the blade that never misses' when they put in contracts. His was doesnotmiss on LJ because my first choice was gone, but it was still free here, so I snapped it up.

claudiometer: "Oh no no no, you do NOT shut down the Claudiometer!" I can't do better than the girl herself did.

iamso_awesome: The last line of the bad haiku Apollo makes up on his first entrance into Percycanon. (After Artemis points out 'I am so cool' is only four syllables and suggests a six-syllable line to replace it - but whether it fit or not, he definitely wouldn't keep 'I am so thick-headed.')

not_elvish: WHY DID IT TAKE ME LIKE EIGHT YEARS TO THINK OF THIS JOURNAL NAME, SERIOUSLY. Throughout Soul Music, people keep asking Imp if he's elvish, which he's not. This joke even impacted my PB choice, since the Lord of the Rings movies were such a big thing waaaaaaaaaay back when I first played him. And yet, it took me forever to think of the obvious user name.

no_martyr: I never bought the 'Regulus sacrificed himself for the house elf' line and wanted my intention to take Regulus AU out in the open. That's pretty much it.

itrunsinthefamily: So after "Red-Handed," I knew I wanted to do something with Red, but I could not think of a good journal name to save my life. Those of us who were talking OUaT contingent at the time batted things around, word got out that Roger Daltrey was doing what turned out to be a very funny cameo (dear ABC: that is not guest starring), I went 'so if I come up with Who lyrics do I get bonus points?'... and the solution popped into my head. Even better, the song in question is "The Real Me."

Mine: I've had a number of handles online in the... dear lord, 17 years I've been around. Holy cow. Anyway, when DW opened I decided to use something that wouldn't change, so misslucyjane is my first name (or the version of it that I like, anyway) and my middle name. (Of course, I've been thinking about changing it to match LJ since people keep using that instead.)

Bilbo: bagginsofbagend. Canon line: "I am a Baggins, of Bag End!" Imagine my delight when I realized DW allows long usernames. I thought about using one of the epithets he gives himself in his conversations with Smaug, barrel-rider and so on, but ultimately, he's a Baggins of Bag End. It will always suit him.

Lydia: fivepointohgpa. Lydia is a very smart girl who hides her brilliance to protect her popularity, but that doesn't stop her from getting straight As, including AP classes, which gives her a higher GPA. My other thought was archaic_latin, which she studied because she got bored with classical.

Merlin: dragons_emrys: Emrys is a Welsh name for Merlin, and what the Druids call him in the show. Merlin is connected with dragons in the show, too, so I wanted a reference to that. I'm on the hunt for a better name, though. I've been keeping a list for a while now, but have yet to find something I'm really happy with.

The Ice King: ice_king: IT HADN'T BEEN USED YET. WHAT. WHAT. I thought about using a reference to his pre-Mushroom War identity, but decided, nah. And sometimes it's nice to have a straightforward username.

Steve: thekidfrombrooklyn: Canon :).
The Red Skull: What makes you so special?
Steve: Nothin'. I'm just a kid from Brooklyn.

Akidfrombrooklyn was taken, so the kid from Brooklyn he became.

My homeless/sandbox characters, because why not:
Castiel, holytaxaccountant: Canon line. In his first appearance Dean says, "So who are you wearing, the holy tax accountant?"

Sherlock Holmes, mightbeagoodone: Canon line, from Lestrade in the BBC series, "I do know that Sherlock Holmes is a great man, and someday, if we're very lucky, he might be a good one."

The Doctor, basically_run, is basically the moment I fell for Eleven. In The Eleventh Hour there's that moment when he steps through the projections of all the Doctors who've come before, and he says, "I'm the Doctor. Basically," and his eyes change from friendly to lethal, "run." Still gives me shivers. I knew at that moment we were in good hands.

Enzo's catchphrase in canon is "Alphanumeric!" (This is used to mean "awesome" for no very good reason.) alphanumericenzo exceeded the LJ character limit, plus it hurts my eyes, so a1enzo works as shorthand.

My own username basically came about because DemiGoth as an AIM handle was taken. (I got into the goth thing in college but have never taken it especially seriously. Mostly I like to wear black, sharpen my fingernails, and find skulls aesthetically pleasing.) People liked it, so I've been sticking with it since.

It's my belief that there isn't a person on earth who at one point or another hasn't needed a good swift kick to the shins for being a jerk to another person.

I changed "shin" to "muse" when I started playing in random sandbox'style games. When I moved to DW I decided that agoodmusekickin is where I'd put all my fandom stuffs.

So there's me, not_my_sandbox. Umm... I guess I wanted to play in the sandboxes but never really got around to it? Anyhow... ages ago I used to use the handle not_me in a chatroom that was killed to death. But not behore I changed my name a couple hundred times. I am not good with maintaining an online identity. Maybe its an extension of why, for whatever reason, I don't assume people are talking to me, even if they are saying my name.

... You know what, I have never really settled on a real life name either. I have many nicknames but not an actual name.

I suppose not_me and not_my_sandbox are the most appropriate names I have given myself *shug*

Ok, enough of my identity problems! Amascut was originally never_b_free after a Garbage song that I thought applied to her and her relation to the world. But it became irrelevant and sort of embarrassing, so I swapped it out for death_gone_mad, after a Doctor Who quote:

All over the world fools are poised, ready to let death fly. Machines of death, Morgaine, screaming from above. Light brighter than the sun. Not a war between armies, nor a war between nations, but just death. Death gone mad! A child looks up into the sky, his eyes turn to cinders. No more tears, only ashes. Is this honour? Is this war? Are these the weapons you would use?

Evil Chicken has remained fowl_beast after Prince Arthas' (from Warcraft) constant battlecries and because I still think it's punny.

And Fairy Fixit, who I finally apped after all this time, is boringly named fairy_fixit. I don't even know if that's her proper name or just a job title, canon won't tell. I suppose I could have been more creative and picked a username involving fizgogs and whosprangits, but it sounded cheesy at the time.

I've told the story of Aradia's username, death_fangirl, before; shortly after they met up for the first time after Aradia's resurrection, Terezi called her a D34TH F4NG1RL (in a nice way) because she was so thrilled about the chance to hold a funeral. Or a corpse party, as she put it. (Trolls don't really do the whole funeral thing, usually.)

Dr Thurlow's full character name on StoryNexus, from when I made the account, is Dr Cameo "Scary Teeth" Thurlow. It contracts well to doctorscaryteeth.

I picked the name Cameo out of a baby name book's list of wild-and-wacky, yet promising, names that were a dictionary word. It had a nice ring to it. However, it tends to be either already taken or too short for websites' username requirements, so I got into the habit of welding additional components onto it, to the point where it looks kind of naked if that's my whole username. I didn't want to just slap numbers on it when this happened, so I went with puns; the one I use the most is CameoAppearance, but at some point that was also taken so I coined "cameoflage". (Sometimes they're both taken, at which point I break out "CrankyCameo", because having to take several tries to sign up makes me cranky. This is the form from which all my AdjectiveCameo AIM names spawned.) I used this for my LJ username - don't remember if that was the first place I used it - and I wanted a minimal amount of fuss and change when I switched to Dreamwidth so I registered the exact same username. (It's also the name of my InsaneJournal account.)

Elle, ellectrical: A play on her name and the word 'electrical,' which describes her ability and the way it operates as generated by her body. It was the first thing I thought of and I snapped it up right away.

Asami, mix_it_up: References a canon quote, in which she tells Korra that "you can't be afraid to mix it up sometimes." I also think of it as reference that because she's a nonbender, and as a mechanic/driver, she needs to think outside the box and come up with more creative or inventive ideas.

Leslie, friendswaffleswork: Another canon quote – "We need to remember what's important in life: friends, waffles, and work. Or waffles, friends, and work. It doesn't matter. But work is third.">

Manny, thisgrimfandango: The title of his canon is Grim Fandango, but this in particular comes from the last lines of a poem one of the caracters recites: "But now we dance this grim fandango/And will four years before we rest."

Marceline, notsweetenough: Comes from a song she sings to Princess Bubblegum – "Sorry I'm not made of sugar/And I'm not sweet enough for you."

Katara, haventlosthope: From the little opening monologue Katara has at the beginning of every A:TLA episode. And the fact that she does make emotional speeches about hope. Occasionally.

Hiccup, first_to_ride: Another quote from canon – Hiccup bemoans the fact that he's the first Viking who wouldn't kill a dragon, to which Astrid responds, "First to ride one, though."

Autor's username has a couple of different components to it. He's German (ostensibly, that's never stated), so Herr suits. But that's also a homonym to heir, a word which is not just his obsession, but his downfall.

Next, Bookman. On the surface, it's a cute little nickname for a kid who lives in the library!

But it also references the Bookmen, a secret society whom Autor desperately wants acknowledgement from--even to the point of ignoring the fact that they'll cut off his hands.

My own (still over on LJ, despite my lack of use of it) is ebony14. Ebony is my old college nickname; most of my friends still call me by it. It came from an old RPG character, the Black Dragon trapped in a White Man's body. The 14 comes from a running gag in the college science fiction club, where it took the place of the number 23, showing up all over the place. Several friends of mine tagged 14 at the end of their LJ names, which made it easy to grab the journal names when we created them.
