"Eponine." He steps forward to take her hand. "What have you got in your pocket?"

Her features sharpen for a moment, then her fingers relax against the pocket of her pants. Reluctantly, she tucks her fingers into her pants pocket and pulls out a perfumed note.

She can't read a lick - and doesn't know if he can. But that is Cosette's educated hand, her perfumed page.

"It's not fair," she says. "Her having him."

"Oh, 'Ponine." There's an aching sorrow in his voice for her pain - and because he knows what her love for Marius will cause. "You kept this from him? Is that why he came?"

[rudderless]

This sends her into a near frenzy of sorrow. "It's always been her they wanted! She gotten everything - a pretty house, food, a father..." the last catches her throat. "I wanted one thing. One thing! Just Marius! And now..."

[street_sparrow]

"And now she gets him too", Gavroche says quietly, and steps forward in a move to put his arms around her. "But you'll always have me. You know I couldn't care less for Cosette."

[rudderless]

Eponine manages a nod. The hug is sweet but, "I can't run off to London with my brother. And I can't have babies with you."

It's not even about the money Marius might have provided - she just wants to be happy.

"Here is better than London", he says stoutly. "And... do you want to have babies? Now? Or just... the possibility of babies?"

[rudderless]

She shrugs. "Never really thot about it," she admits. "A long long time from now. When I'm a real lady." Here is generally better than anywhere else, in any event.

[street_sparrow]

"A real lady", he says a little sadly. "'Ponine, you know that's never going to happen in Paris. But I know a place you can make a whole new start."

[rudderless]

"And how do you know it can happen here?" It's not that she's had all of the hope beaten out of her; far from it. But she's afraid to wish for anything, beyond what she can touch.

[street_sparrow]

"Anything can happen here." He believes it, fiercely. "Look at me. I'm almost nobility, now."

[rudderless]

"...Nobility?" Now she raises an eyebrow. "How did that happen?"

[street_sparrow]

"Got myself adopted, didn't I?" He grins proudly. "They're good people. Just added a whole new wing just for me. You'd be made welcome."

[rudderless]

Well, this is merry news. She miiight actually let him have his wallet back.

Maybe.

She reaches to tickle his ribs. "Fancy one, you. Oughta know that they were royalty on top of it all."

[street_sparrow]

He squeaks and wriggles away.

"Not quite royalty, but close."

[rudderless]

"Might as well be, with how you're puffed up."

Dodge! Tickle!

[street_sparrow]

"I am not puffed up!" he says indignantly. "You make it sound like I've forgotten."

[rudderless]

"I didn't say that," she replies, elbowing him. "Never thought you would. No one survives hell and forgets it."

[street_sparrow]

He prods her back.

"No. But I'm out of that now, and I want you to be out with me."

[rudderless]

She shrugs. "I never liked doing it much."

Eponine always wanted to be a genteel, educated woman, holding court over her own parlor, in any event. Though the likelihood of her becoming a truly fine lady remains to be seen.

"I'll help you learn to read, too", he offers.

"If you want to," she says, rubbing her elbows self-consciously.

"'Course I do. I know you'd have learned sooner if you could."

"Well, now that I got the chance I'm gonna give it my all," she declares proudly.

"I know you will. You never did anything less."
