DE: Today we are canceling the Allpocalypse

So did everyone survive the heat waves? I certainly hope so. It's odd seeing folks with higher temps than my own to be honest. Anyway, let's get right to the DE.

Inspired by Pacific Rim, what would be the name of a jaeger (i.e. giant robot mech) that your pup pilots? Who would be their copilot*; within Milliways and without?

*Jaeger pilots control the robots via mental link that is a gestalt of the two pilot's minds. Both pilots need to work in sink and share their minds with each other.

Also, a link with several names of jaeger teams for your inspiration.

Alyx and Gordon, beyond a doubt; they've already got the mental link thanks to what the Vortigaunts did to save Alyx's life. Not sure about the jaeger's name, alas. There's a good chance Gordon would just suggest picking two letters from the NATO phonetic alphabet because he doesn't often have imagination that way.

My Alyx headvoice is telling me not to force it--a name will naturally suggest itself at some point in the process of building it. (Because you know she'll be building a significant chunk of the Jaeger herself.)

Names are going to need a little more thinking (or a little more coffee -- one of the two!), but as for copilots...

- As much as I want to say Gaeta and Hoshi, I think Gaeta and Dee would be a really good copilot match. That's mostly due to current Milliways events, though; maybe once things are better repaired between Felix and Louis -- and Gaeta isn't, y'know, desperately trying to hide some parts of himself from Louis -- they'll make a better pair.

- Bolin and Mako, without question.

- Ahahaaaaa I don't even want to think about what'd happen if the Trickster Drifted with somebody. *weak grin* Not to mention that he's got enough closely-guarded secrets to send him running way the hell away from that Vulcan mind-meld.

- Olivia's solitary enough that I'm actually having a lot of trouble thinking of a copilot, especially at this point in canon; the only potential candidate before then might have been Peter. Maybe Charlie McGee, if we're going in-Milliways?

Joshua with Claudia, without a doubt. Names: Joshua: Beta Protector, Claudia: Xi Caretaker. The Mech would be Univille.

Helena... I have no freaking clue, and Fantine is looking at me funny.

The Joshua-Claud combination would probably be something like Protector Caretaker. (if each one is the name of one of the pilots, if not, it would probably be something like Artifact Collection)

Mental link? Sorry, but anyone who gets paired with Amascut or one of her aliases is going to be mentally nommed. I think, especially since the gods of her canon have turned out to have Big McLargehuge giant forms, that Amascut would be a Jaeger rather than just a pilot, named Devourer's Mercy or Kaiju named Devourer's Wrath. Something like that.

Fairy Fixit would be paired with her sister, the MF'ing Tooth Fairy. Inside Milliways... I don't know if she is familiar enough with anyone yet. Warp Jaw would be the Jaeger name.

I won't even attempt to name the things, but:

Cata and Sam

Claudia and Joshua

Apollo and Artemis

Red and Snow BUT Ruby would end up with... possibly Dr. Whale, if it's past that point in canon. Pre-curse-breaking, probably Ashley.

Imp and Regulus are just making confused faces.

Trowa and Quatre, presumably. I did actually waffle about this a little, because the thing is that Trowa and Quatre have a strong mental link already, but their combat styles are very different. I think if they lived in a world where piloting giant robots was done in telepathic partnership rather than solo, though, that context plus the effect of the Drift would make their combat styles match up better.

Enjolras and Combeferre. No question.

River and... man. I think the only current candidate is Galadan, really. (She would drift well with Simon, but in combat they would fall apart, because Simon isn't a fighter or a killer. I don't think it would ever get to that point, because Simon's simulator scores would be down in the basement somewhere. Batya, any disagreement?) Although trying to think about the Academy in a Drift context is fascinating.

Clare and Teresa, presumably. (You can always find me in the Drift.) Raki wants to be a pilot, and specifically to be Clare's co-pilot, but he's not Drift-compatible. This is another canon where trying to AU the training context makes a lot of complicated, fascinating changes.

Thor is a jaeger. Uh. I'm not honestly sure! He's a good team player, but not a good blow-by-blow partner, really. He and Loki would be a disastrous jaeger team.

At Milliways, Wonder Woman is probably the best candidate.

I have no ideas for jaeger names, because all the canonical ones are great but they mostly read to me as Randomnoun Randomnoun, and I can't take the list seriously, and then I start thinking about Big McLargehuge and stuff, so... uh... suggestions welcome!

Enzo wants to copilot with Dani, but honestly, if we want a seamless mental link, Enzo and Matrix probably makes the most sense. A reconvergence of divergent selves would be interesting, certainly.

All the names I can think of make too much sense to be usable, from the looks of things.

Nita and Kit, obviously; they've been in each other's heads before, and with Kit's mechanical expertise informing the use of the Jaeger and Nita's biological expertise informing how to attack the Kaiju, they'd be a force to be reckoned with.

Epimetheus and Prometheus in the Olympos Sfyri, assuming Epimetheus wasn't running around like Newt going "OMG THE KAIJU ARE SO COOL OMG OMG HELLO WHO'S A CUTE LITTLE RAMPAGING MONSTER"

Kate and Harry Percy, naturally. In the Lioness Joust?

Clint I really don't see Clint as Drift-compatible, even though I have an AU in my head where he's Pentecost's dead partner. (IT'S ASHIE'S FAULT OK >.>)

Quatre is definitely Drift-compatible. As Gen pointed out about, and I commented on; I'm not sure he'd be allowed in a Jaeger (he has some psychic issues), but if he were Trowa's the most likely bet.

Legolas I want to say Demeter because it's funny. Otherwise I have no clue.

Rue ... Any of her close main character canon mates? Well, no, Tutu would just try to dance the Kaiju into peace. Of course, that'd probably work, given she is Tutu. Uh, she synchs better with Mytho, but she and Fakir are more similar, so it's kind of a draw there.

Darcy and NATASHA. She would be the newbie and she would go *_____* at Natasha constantly. I could also see her with Thor, injecting a little sneakiness into his combat but primarily following his lead. Otherwise she'd just not be in a Jaeger, and instead oversee something or another; be the Coulson-equivalent's assistant.

Will and Little John and their Jaeger would be Lockley's Staff.

I've actually started writing an AU of Charles and Erik as co-pilots but I don't know if I can make it works. Since I could see Charles being the one who helps the pilots keep it together mentally and then Erik comes in needing a co-pilot, they could work together but it would disrupt other things. The AU is growing on me.

William would be with Mark or his father.

Moist shouldn't be allowed in the drift but I could see him with Helena.

Demeter and Kore since neither of them trust anyone else the same way. Though they also wouldn't really need a Jaeger with their goddess powers.

Sameth is tricky, but I think in canon it would be Nick or Ellimere, in Bar, Kait. Though in the AU I started for him, he's a mechanic, genius one on the Jaegers, Sabriel and Touchstone were co-pilots, their Jaeger was Death Knell.

Jane would be with her sister Cassandra or Tom.

Tumnus wouldn't be a good pilot, but he would be great support staff.

The Pirate King and Ruth as they work the best of anyone in that cast.

So, it's like everyone in the game has seen this movie. It might be a commercial dud, but I can tell a cult classic in the making.

Anyway, I'm getting Howard telling me how he would build one with his era's technology. And also picturing a Science Bros Avengers/Pacific Rim crossover. I wonder who a natural Drift partner would be. Not Cap. Maybe Agent Carter or Col. Philips? He would call it Winged Victory. And it would fly, darn it. (Even though I am so glad the jaegers don't fly. A small concession to the fuel/mass ratio problem.)

Cyborg grew up watching mecha anime. His would be a giant version of himself, and he would call it the T-Bot. Or T-Jaeger. And hope that Robin or Aqualad or anyone but Beast Boy, really, is available for drifting. But Robin and Raven would be the best choices. Though I wonder if having a cyber-enhanced brain and a life as a cyborg would let Cy be a solo pilot without brain meltdown.

Kirk would name his the Christopher Pike or the Robert April, and obviously work with Spock. But his would have 23rd century tech like phasers.

Raph and Mike, of course.
And...part of me wants their jaeger to be: No Sleep Til Brooklyn.
Sure it doesn't match the naming convention, but it makes me laugh.
Maybe Gamera Retribution?

Bumi and Tenzin.
THINK ABOUT THAT!
BUMI AND TENZIN in a JAEGER!

It's like...one of the most glorious things ever.
Though, from what I've seen of Kya thus far, maybe Kya and Bumi would be a better fit.

Bumi would want to name the jaeger, Rutting Badgermoles, so...someone should stop him. (It's what he thinks every time he sees one.) And it's probably in poor tasted to call one The Avatar State.

Speaking of that:
I want Korra and Aang to be jaeger Pilots together.

Ida is her own Jaeger.

Do not, under any circumstances, give the Loompas a jaeger. Ever. Just don't do it.

Yugo, like all Kamen Riders in his series, pretty much already has a jaeger in the form of his Phantom's giant-and-mechanised-true-form.

But other than that, from his own canon he'd probably be partnered with Misa/Medusa, and they'd pilot - idk, Phantom Eclipse or something, and it'd be the jaeger personification of the 'More Dakka' principle.

Like a lot of people seem too, I only have half of the DE.
In my case, names.
Ako: Amber Integrate
Artemis: Aster Verdant
Tyler: Keeping Omega
Robo: Cyan Sighter
Janet: Nocturne Lancer

Janet and Tyler is actually fairly willing to Drift but mostly with people from home. Ako isn't at all, she has memory modification issues (but is OK with skill implants. Uh, thanks Milliways for helping make the shy Japanese schoolgirl a transhumanist?) Artemis isn't yet, in some sort of merged universe it'll probably be Wally. Prety sure Robo is on the tech side of things, or an uplink for semi-solo operation. Possibly he has a gunner instead of a co-pilot.

Sheba would, I imagine, be Felix's copilot; he loves her, and headcanonically has no problem letting her mind-read him - though reciprocation is somewhat more logistically difficult. But as for the name... I dunno, maybe Sandstorm? Honestly the thought of Felix trying to run a mech is somewhere between hilarious and horrifying anyway. Karis, sure, but Felix?

Mark needs no jaeger. He kills kaiju on his own. ("I can fly 800,000 miles per hour, survive in total vacuum, and I'm Invincible. Why do I need a giant robot to fight giant monsters?")

Aradia would team up with Sollux, naturally -- they're canonical quadrantmates even if it's never been very clear whether they're moirails or matesprits (I favour the former interpretation) -- and they would fly the Meteor Bombardier. Their combined psychic talents would be a considerable asset.

Dr Thurlow doesn't really have any friends, lovers, or siblings who they trust to drift with them* and their brain would be a pretty unpleasant place to visit what with all the mental scars and the occasional eldritch sanity-hazard trapped in there. (Searing the Correspondence onto your co-pilot's brain sounds like it wouldn't be fun for anyone.) I could see them filling Newt's role, though.

*At least not in this continuity -- in other RPs they have a thriving social circle of other OC player-characters, but that's not terribly relevant, now is it.

[personal profile] chanter1944 2013-07-23 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
I have not seen this movie. I clearly need to.

From what I'm reading so far, Sariel might not be drift compatible - memory modification gives her the combination creepy crawlies and righteous angries, and the skill upgrade idea is making her if not unwilling, then at least somewhat hesitant depending on circumstances. However, if she were... she and Gene Roe would probably do quite well as a jaeger team. Sariel and Will would be either really spectacular in spots or really awful, and I suspect the latter. Sariel and Leela Sevateem... hmm. Call that one a maybe? It might work.
moonandstar: (Default)

[personal profile] moonandstar 2013-07-23 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
Jim and Bart would obviously be copilots. And frankly, I can't think of a name much better for a jaeger than Blazing Saddle.

Leela and the Doctor could probably do in a pinch, if ever the TARDIS was out of reach or out of commission. Valiant Savage would do nicely for a name.

I suppose Garyn and Caius would need to be paired together. Although they're more in the business of destroying a giant stompy death robot rather than piloting one. The Thirty-Six Lessons of Vivec also suggests a link between the Nerevarine and Dagoth Ur ("Hortator and Sharmat, one and one, eleven, an inelegant number. Which of the ones is the more important? Could you ever tell if they switched places?"). This refers to a mystical link based on metaphysics that I only partially understand and am disinclined to explain. It should be noted, however, that Lord Dagoth toys with but ultimately rejects the idea of sharing the power of Akulakhan with anybody else. So that's a no go. In any case, the name of the "jaeger" is already given in canon. In fact, it has many names: Numidium. Akulakhan. Walk-Brass. The Brass God. The Brass Tower.

Don't really think my other pups would be the jaeger-piloting type. Kane doesn't really have an equal who would be fit to pilot one with him. He's content to send his troops out in their Avatar warmechs.
