Yes, this! Because the way Hugo writes, he has the characters do/say one thing, and then promptly wanders off in his own voice to point out that there are any number of other ways things can be taken. I do <3 him, even if he is random. He gives a lot to think about, and weaves a great story while he does it.

I also forgot to point out the obvious meta of Jean Valjean and Javert having been written as two sides of the same coin, and also inspired by one single man, which (to me at least) is fascinating in and of itself.
