charity update!
So I get home from the con (protip: if you're doing a costume people will want pictures of, especially one with heavy headgear, pick a default pose that doesn't involve leaning backward) to an inbox full of good news. Can you handle this? Got a firm grip on your socks?
Our Donors Choose charity drive has raised $320, and 6 of the projects we've contributed to are now fully funded, partly because of us.
115 middle-schoolers in North Carolina will have composition books to write in. 24 kindergarteners in Indiana will have a writing center to keep their supplies organized. 24 kids in the 3rd-6th grade gifted program in Mississippi will have printer ink so they can print out the stories they write. 45 first graders in Florida will have paper and supplies for a writing workshop. 180 ESOL students in Maryland will have writing journals and other school supplies. 18 ESOL students in Wisconsin will have books and supplies for their writing program. 6 teachers and 406 students will have a better year than they would've otherwise, thanks partly to us.
There are still four projects left on our page if you feel like paying your tab. 1.5 million thanks to everyone who has donated so far. You're saving the world, here.
"Thank you for all your help with my project! It really means a lot that you were willing to donate to something that really means a lot to me. It's amazing to see that you care about writing as much as I do!
The notebooks that you helped to provide are going to be used nearly daily in my room. I think that my sixth graders are going to be very eager to get the chance to free write and express themselves in their journals. Using this journal will help students work up to completing a variety of writing pieces.
I hope to get the rest of my colleagues in on using writer's notebooks! Thank you again for everything that you have helped me to accomplish."
"Thank you so much for your support to my students. I am excited to announce that my project is fully funded, and our writing workshop will soon be in place! In the first weeks of school, I have already seen how my students enjoy sharing their ideas through pictures and words, and also how much practice they'll need in order to be strong writers by the end of the year. The materials that you have donated will make a huge difference! Thank you again!"
"Today was amazing! It was the start to a new school year with my brand new group of students and I received notice that my project was fully funded just moments ago.
I am grateful for the support that you have shown to my classroom and myself. Many of you have stated your belief that writing is an important piece in a child's learning. I believe it is the skill that weaves together all the other subject areas that our students will experience in their school career and in life.
Your donation is going to support these new kindergarten students in their journey to become writers this year and those students who will follow in their footsteps in future years."
"This is just a small token of my gratitude for your generous donation to my classroom. Words cannot describe how excited my students will be when I bring in the new supplies. The chart paper, spiral notebooks, colored paper, color pencils, and markers will allow my students to continue practicing their writing next year. I will be wrapping all the supplies in a huge box to give my students the opportunities to unwrap the presents from people who truly care about their education.
Again, thank you so much for your kind donation. Without donors like you, thousands of classrooms across the nation would have difficulty providing an excellent education for all children."
"Thank you so much for your generous donation to our Donor's Choose project! My students and I were so excited when it was totally funded. I know they will enjoy writing more since they will be able to print their work.
It is awesome for my students to see people like yourselves helping others. This is a great life lesson for them. Many of them have said that when they grow up, they want to do something like this to help students. Thanks again for your kindness from the bottom of my heart."
"I can't fully express my joy, excitement, and thanks for your donation to my project. It is great to see that you share my vision for reaching children. Writing is one way to allow the students to shine through creativity.
The tools that you have funded will enable students to create, illustrate, and expand their writing. They will see that expository writing also allows for a creative side. The books will engage the students in language learning through word play and pictures.
My room is ready for the students and our new writing center."
