Shout Outs! Get your Shout Outs right here, folks!

Good afternoon (or morning, or evening), Milliways! My sincerest apologies for the delay; I'm still having some computer trouble*, and updating last night wasn't possible. But that just means more awesome, right?

I know there's so much more out there I just haven't had the chance to read yet, so now it's YOUR turn to shout out your favorites from the past week! Link us to the awesome, friends. And don't forget your wrapped and finished slowtimes!

There can never be enough pimping and shouting out for this brilliant series of OOMs: Dracula therapy for Inspector Javert! Flynn and Write are geniuses, and the whole plot sent me running for the respective canons.

And now I've poked around in the book version of Les Mis, and can't forget the pathetically ridiculous and bawlworthy thing that is Javert's "suicide note"...

Inorite!? It's a laundry list of Things That Should Be Fixed.

I get the sense that if he was a modern character, he'd be the local policeman that measured lawn lengths to make sure they met the local ordinances, or cited people for parking 19" from the curb instead of the required 18".

God, he and Nick Angel will get on like jam on toast!

ETA: Also, thank you for such high praise. :3

ETA2: Also, also, please remember when watching V's canon, it has Keanu Reeves & Winona Ryder in it. It is a glorious trainwreck. And yeah, just know that going in.

I am totally going to thread-stalk whenever Javert and Nick Angel meet!

And yes, that laundry list made me snerk at the computer with suppressed laughter (I was in my PM class) while at the same time breaking my poor heart in many little pieces. Speaking of characters and their legacies!
yakalskovich: (We are being dramatic)

[personal profile] yakalskovich 2013-09-05 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
As for your ETA2, I have already watched it again the other day, still thinking it's mostly about a) sexual repression and b) cinema. It is very 90s on top of that, so what? I was alive in 1992 and remember what it was like.

[personal profile] vojvode 2013-09-06 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
It's still one I love, and gloriously over the top, and it's given me one of the best charries I've ever written, so I can't complain.

It is fun! And the not-use of digital effects is remarkable. It looks so nicely old-fashioned that way.

Thank you!

And d'aww yes, that note is...well, it's entirely Javert, is what it is. *pats him*
yakalskovich: (Mummy smurf)

[personal profile] yakalskovich 2013-09-06 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
It made me realise that Javert isn't just that tragical character I see in the musical movie, he's also a satirical character who is slightly ridiculous and whom the narrator of the book subtly pokes fun at. There's a word in Bavarian dialect for a person like that -- Dipferlscheißer, which literally means somebody who shits small dots...

**ducks, hides**
never_shall_yield: (St Michael)

[personal profile] never_shall_yield 2013-09-06 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol, no need to duck and hide! He's one of Les Miserables just like everyone else, because he thinks he's just, and good, but he's not because he willingly upholds an unjust system. He's blind, and more to be pitied than anything else.
yakalskovich: (Reality is a rotten place to be)

[personal profile] yakalskovich 2013-09-06 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
The mixture of the ridiculous and the heartbreaking is what makes that note so especially memorable. Ouch. I was needing those feels and didn't want them randomly devastated...

Welcome to the world of Victor Hugo. The man does not pull his punches. *fistbump*
yakalskovich: (Lupus in fabula)

[personal profile] yakalskovich 2013-09-06 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
And he does natter on! Regularly (not poking ahead, that is) I am still stuck somewhere near the beginning where he spends chapter after chapter doing nothing but explain what kind of person that bishop is. I got it, thank you -- he's a bit of a saint. Now, story, please!
never_shall_yield: (Paris)

[personal profile] never_shall_yield 2013-09-06 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude, seriously. I laughed my arse off at that bit. Because he literally says, 'this guy has nothing to do with the story' and then talks about him for fourteen chapters.

But he is quite pivotal, so.

Just wait until you get to the bit about the sewers. *grin*

I want more tome to read so I get to the interesting parts before death! Luckily, there is only one week of my project management course left, and then I go back to work, which entails 20 minutes of tram ride each way. I get some serious reading done in those 40 minutes per working day.

Then, enjoy! You just have to...accept that you're not going to get anywhere quickly. But Great Works that explore the big problems of society are worth it, in the end. :)

Of course they are! And even the meandering beginning is quite entertaining by itself.

19th century writers thought that we needed to know all sorts of things that 20th and 21st century editors tend to mercilessly cut out.

I don't have much to pimp at the moment because my new job (!!!) limits my free time here, BUT I thought Autor's diary on raising demon bunnies was kind of hilarious.

I also managed to wrap up a few slowtimes, namely some shit between Tommy and Voodoo that went wildly out of control, mostly because I can't stop Tommy's IC habit of picking the wrong fights and not being able to walk away from them. Warnings for violence and language.

Tommy then cheered up Sunshine in the infirmary by giving her a romance novel that Bar recommended. And he just isn't having any luck making friends because he just got on Molly Hayes's shitlist. (Dunno if that one's wrapped or not yet.)

Thank you! I appreciate that. And congratulations on your new job!

The Sunshine thread made me cackle, Molly's is just as hilarious, and Tommy/Voodoo forever.

[personal profile] gavin62truck 2013-09-06 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you!

And who knew, but there is a whole subgenre of firefighter romance novels. It shouldn't have surprised me, but it did.

[personal profile] herr_bookman 2013-09-06 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)
It's the suspenders. *firm nod*

I'M REALLY SORRY MY BRAIN DIED THIS WEEK

I suck! (Not in that way, sry Tommy.) Tagging up now, promise. :D

Hah! Slowtime and braindeath are fine! I was just speculating over whether Molly would have something else to say, so I left the tag open ended.

TAG FINALLY.

Holy shit I am so sorry, I didn't write anything for like a week because my brain just marshmallowed on me.

Thank you so much for the thread! It isn't often Molly gets to shout at someone. XD

Thanks for the shout-out! I'm pretty sure I'm having way more fun with these threads than poor Mary is. :)

Thankee for the shoutout! :D I'm slower than a slow thing, but I'm around again! :D

Seconding the welcome for Nicholas Angel, by the way. Yay returned old friends!
