Wednesday Night Shout Outs!

Happy Talk Like a Pirate Day Eve! Anybody have plans for the morrow?

Listen, guys, you're going to have to stop being so awesome. It makes it hard for me to choose the Shout Outs. ;)

You know what the best part is? Now it's YOUR turn to tell me what you've been loving. So have at it, Milliways! Shout out your favorites, second something that's already been shared, bring us your finished slowtimes, and point us to your awesomeness in the sandboxes! Fly, my monkeys! Er.

:D?

I don't care if it's not officially part of Milliways but I loved everyone's two sentece fics. They were so awesome, I'm tempted to make it a weekly thing. = ]

Okay, so things aren't done yet but progress! Lucas's penultimate canon OOM is roughly halfway done!

So this is a special shout out to Cass, Val, and Debi for sticking with me on this so far and Autor, Enzo, and Dinah for sticking with Lucas. All three of you are wonderful and your pups are wonderful and thank you! ♥

Even though three of them were mine: ALL THE THREADS on the stoned!mopey!Drac EP. I especially recommend Autor's. Solid comedy gold with one or two painful twists, a lot of references to Millicanon, a dash of Bad Idea Theatre, and dea ex machina Sunshine to the rescue.

On the other (hopefully far away) margin of the same amazing plot (which I have been loving to bits, to the point of acquiring a new fandom), there is this lovely little quiet bit with Guppy, Javert, and the smoke detector, which has all the makings of a classic. Everybody go and read, if you haven't already!

Thank you! I really enjoyed that whole thread, and the ending was all Char. <3 her.

And yay, new fandom! \o/

Well, I had to do a bit of research to see who I was dealing with. 'Dracula' I knew -- I distinctly associate the movie with a lavish/garish display in the window of a video shop in Rovaniemi in 1993 or 1994, and I definitely saw it in the 90s, quite apart from the part where I read the book when I was a teenager and had a ghost story phase where I read all the classical ghost stories I could reach.

Les Mis, though, I had managed to have no contact with above the general knowledge that it exists, and that Gavroche in Milliways was from it. Then you came in with Javert, and the movie was to be had for free on the flight to Iceland (and my sister was watching it as well), and I thought to do a little research as well. Only, with Les Mis, there can't be just a little reasearch. There is too much material, too large a book to read, too many playlists on YouTube, masses of fanfic on AO3, what have you -- so I fell into a maelstrom or up an escalator, and whoops, I accidentally fandom'ed.

Lol, 'there can't be just a little research' - you are so, so, so right. Read a fic, hear a song and then you're sucked into the enormity of THE AWESOME.

I love it. Social politics, and angst, and fighting, all to catchy tunes!

And middle-aged virgins. Them too.

I love them all!! My mind fell in, and it's not coming out. There is more and more and more, and the songs all over again and again, and every time 'Stars' and 'Javert's Suicide' are SOO SAD!! And heartbreaking!

And so much fic. Including yours, and the ones you recced/publicly bookmarked. I just fell in and don't know when I will get back out...

On the other hand, I am On A Roll (I get these perfect storms of inspirations and opportunities from time to time; the last was in May 2012), and a new fandom definitely has to be involved in that state (the last time, it was Avengers) to be properly inspired with my life. So yes, I did that fascinating Project Management class, I am trying out new things at work, and there is Les Mis to properly suck at my brain from a non-work, non-RL direction.

Definitely not getting a Les Mis pup, though. My life is full. As is my roster. Definitely not considering either Eponine or Monseigneur Bienvenu, either. Totally not on. Nopeski!!

Have you heard Philip Quast's version of Stars? If not, run, don't walk, to YouTube. In fact the whole of the 10th Anniversary Concert is worth a listen - better than the 25th in my opinion, but obviously that's a matter of taste.

Fic - make sure you read Toil Until The Old Colours Fade by drcalvin: it's massively long, and massively perfect. Also, A Wolf in New Clothing by voksen, because gnnnnh. They're both in my bookmarks if you haven't got that far yet.

Sounds like life's going well! V. glad to hear it, mate. :)

For some reason, YouTube is being silly here at work today -- will go and find it at home. I think that concert has a playlist on YouTube as well. But I had a little peek at Amazon, and the 30 seconds soundbite suggests it's a properly trained singer for once...

I have the second fic downloaded to my iPad (fic and for-pay books and free stuff from Project Gutenberg happily mingle in my Kindle app), but the first seemed too massively massive; however, if you say it is THAT good, then I'll get it as well! Actually, I'll have a look now, as I'm in the WiFi here at work as well, and the window to call customers is over and the time to putter has begun...

((Pause))

Oh, it starts with the fourth iteration and not the first one -- original approach! I like!

Philip Quast is generally considered as the definitive Javert. And all the people in the 10AC have played the parts in the West End/Broadway, so yep, all properly trained. Colm Wilkinson as Valjean is the original - he played him for ages when the show was first staged.

Toil is, like, the fandom classic. And I just saw on Tumblr about half an hour ago that it just past 10k hits on A03 - it really is that good. Like...gah, now I want to go and read it again. Augh.

Enjoy!

Okay...

So starting to read that, then, as soon as I am out of here and sitting at the tram stop. And it seems if I do buy a version of the Les Mis musical so I can take it with me rather than just have the list on YouTube on repeat, I might pick that one. I had been listening to the 1987 Broadway version on YouTube. The music does stick to one's brain. Especially if one hears it sung by people who actually can sing.

Out of geeky interest, Colm Wilkinson, being too old to play Valjean now, was the good bishop in the film. And Samantha Barks has played Eponine and/or Fantine on stage, too.
yakalskovich: (Mummy smurf)

[personal profile] yakalskovich 2013-09-19 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, now I am going to research different versions of that musical and perhaps decide which version to buy...

I read a summary of that thing. It was QUITE ENOUGH.

[personal profile] yakalskovich 2013-09-19 01:51 pm (UTC)(link)
There is enough badfic online for free; no reason to buy badfic with actual money. I mean, both 'Dracula' and 'Les Mis' came to my trusty iPad and its Kindle app for utterly free. I am not going to pay for a bad sequel to either when AO3 is totally brimming with GOOD ones.

Sequel to what?
street_sparrow: (Default)

[personal profile] street_sparrow 2013-09-19 02:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Les Mis. It's awful.

...It's also Becca's fault I even know it exists, come to think of it.
yakalskovich: (Reality is a rotten place to be)

[personal profile] yakalskovich 2013-09-19 02:04 pm (UTC)(link)
As I said to Write upthread, there are enough GOOD sequels to be had for free on AO3. So why bother with an awful printed sequel. Just printing it doesn't make a badfic about a public domain source suddenly a necessary part of that canon.

Seconding Maru's recommendation of Dracula's entire EP. And also Nicholas Angel and Vyvyan, because HAHAHA. It is gold.

Adding Autor and Sunshine post-Autor's opium filled run-in with Dracula. It's really sweet. :)

[personal profile] herr_bookman 2013-09-19 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Aww, thanks for the love, you guys. I absolutely have to second everything Gabby highlighted today, especially Oswin and Clint's trip to Jurassic Park! Dracula's opium den was fabulous. Margolotta's thread was especially hilarious.

Kate Barlow's third therapy session with Dr. Lecter nearly made me throw something at a wall. (Appropriate warnings apply.)

And hie thee hence to Natasha's short cliffhanger of an OOM. Those just keep getting better and better.

I also threadstalked both 1. Stacker's time in the gym with Raph and Lohengrin, and 2. Gary's offering Karkat a Red Bull and Jäger.

Thank you! If you want to throw things at walls, then I am doing it right. Saph once said that with almost every new Hannibal tag she reads somewhere, she inwardly scream "YOU UTTER BASTARD!!" So, you are not alone.-

I want Gavroche to meet Autor, please. I have a feeling they could make Sunshine pull her hair out if they really tried.

Not finished yet, but I want to link it anyway, as it took a rather sudden turn off the deep end of the philosophical pool yesterday, and while I linked it in crackchat, most people probably didn't see that.

Anyway I present to you: Alfred meets Javert.
