Daily Entertainment: Housework Edition!

Happy Saturday, everyone! In the spirit of 'get things done', I present you with today's DE:

Chores! Does your character do any housework at home? If so, what? Do they like it? Hate it? Is there something particular that they absolutely despise? Is there something that they really don't mind doing?
yakalskovich: (Cooking with Hannibal Lecter)

Oh myyy! I have been wrecking my brains over that in relation to Hannibal. He cooks, and he tidies up his own kitchen, and he does lots of re-decorating and puttering around and keeping things spotless. But who washes all his posh clothes, takes and fetches all the dry-cleaning, who hoovers the floor and washes those enormous windows and dusts all the books and polishes the dining table? He does employ professionals to help with his banquet in canon, so he's not averse to letting help into his house, but there are things that a cleaner would see.

My head-canon is that he has a charlady, an older Lithuanian woman who speaks little English and who is the only person he still regularly speaks his native language with and who does all this for him, sometimes bringing in her nieces for thorough spring-cleaning, or window washing day, and the like. She operates in the background and simply never doubts what Dr. Lecter does. If there is blood, he is a doctor? And a cook? No?

Sunshine does all her own cleaning, and - for the most part - enjoys it. A thorough cleaning of her apartment is often her go-to answer for a bad mood. Sometimes you just need to take out all your frustration on scrubbing the bathroom grout. ^_^

Yrael, on the other hand, will sleep while someone else does the chores.

Zelgadiss lives on the road, so he has no housework to do. He keeps his things orderly and his clothes clean as he can, however.

Gordon and Ellen both have significantly less housework than one would expect given their circumstances. This is because they both have Mr. Handy robot butlers; Ellen's came with her house in Megaton, and Gordon's was Ellen's gift to Alyx when they got married. It helps. Ellen, however, generally has the job of going out to look after her Brahmin and collecting their dung when she's not on active field duty, which may not be housework in the normal sense but which does allow for a certain amount of light and heat, so that probably qualifies. She's not too fond of that but she does it anyway.

Shephard does his own cleaning. You have to set an example. And no housework can be more of a pain than working with his mother's beehives when he was a kid, so he doesn't complain.

Stacker is in a similar situation but without the bees part.

Ben helps with the cooking and dishes (most days), and his room tends towards the organized. The hangar bay of the Baxter Building is also kept very clean and organized. All else is done by robots.

Val keeps a mostly clean room in Milliways. I say mostly as her experiments and explorations are more important to her than a clean room, unless the mess gets in the way of her work.

Hank is very organized and proficient with chores. I can even see him stepping in and doing other peoples chores simply because they need to be done. Despite the time he lives in, he doesn't see chores as women's work.

Jess couldn't be bothered with chores and puts them off until they can't be ignored any longer.

Andrea keeps her home like an army barracks. You can bounce a quarter off her bed every morning.

Quin likely is the same. Though in his case it's easier since the jedi live such spartan lives.

Anton...I think he avoids chores. He's not a slob but he tends to leave things until they are a big hassle.

Thalia takes care of chores as soon as they need doing. Of course, her chores are different then the usual since she's with the Hunters.

Lady Mary - AHAHAHAHA. Noooooope. At her current point in canon, I believe there are about 10 named characters who are servants, but the house would have had waaaaay more than that. Homegirl can't even make her own tea, let alone maintain her fancy gowns, and while she loves to ride, she's not spending any time mucking out the stables.

Carol - Lives alone, so by necessity she has to do some housework, even if it's not her favorite thing in the world. (There is no DANGER in housework. Boooooring. But she didn't spend all those years in the military without learning to keep things clean and organized.) She doesn't keep a lot of clutter around, which helps keep things looking nice. She hates doing dishes though, and wishes her place had a dishwasher.

Stiles - Always had some chores when he was little, but after his mom died he really stepped up to help his dad. He started with keeping his room organized, then moved on to bigger things like doing his own laundry and setting the trash bins out each week. These days, he's still man in charge of all laundry and lawn care, and he's responsible for his own room and bathroom. He splits the rest of the cooking and cleaning with his dad. They're both busy, so the house is never perfect, but they do fine.

Gene - no. Unless he's nagged to infinity. He'll mow the lawn, but that's about it. If he has to wash dishes, he'll moan for a week.

Bruce Wayne - no.

Bruce Banner - currently not staying anywhere long enough to have to do any. But he did, back when life was normal, and didn't really mind. These days, he'd love to have to do something so domestic again.

Javert - no. The portress of his apartment building would take care of that.

Valjean - not much. He has a housekeeper, Toussaint. But he's a tidy person, and owns practically nothing anyway. So he'll keep his papers and books neat, and doesn't mind doing it at all.

Autor's parents own an inn, so his main chores are to forage and stay out from underfoot. He keeps his room tidy and will whip up a rollmop or two as needed, but his main focus is learning the piano.

Amascut gets her own post because of all her aliases

[personal profile] death_gone_mad 2013-10-05 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Amascut.... Or I should say Sumona — has some dude living or maybe working on the upper floor of her house in Pollnivneach. Or maybe I should say apartment. The ground floor of the building has a store of some sort (I imagine this is Sumona's actual shop) and a spartan room full of bunkbeds in which she is found in-game. Upstairs is a fancy furnished apartment where she actually lives. Well, pretends to live. But then there's the dude... a butler maybe? And the dining room table has four chairs? Maybe I am reading too much into the random ass placement of furniture and NPCs in that building.

Oh, wait! Sumona isn't the only one that lives there! Her conveniently clumsy identical twin sister Jesmona also lives there! Now the chairs make a bit more sense.

Sumona and Jesmona sleep together in the same luxurious king sized bed. Daww...

The two people that pretend to live in that house must create a lot of work for that poor random NPC/butler/manservant/whatever. Maybe he's there just to make sure the apartment looks lived in and to keep it from getting dusty. *shrug* The room full of bunk beds is a bit messy and some of the beds are unmade, and the store isn't exactly tidy. It seems Sumona is only picky about the cleanliness and ordered appearance of her upstairs apartment, but since she doesn't actually live there there aren't much chores to do related to that. The store... hmm... I guess she does some chores related to stocking and keeping shelves from falling over. Inventory too. Or maybe she has some else do that, who knows? As for why she spends so much time in the room with the bunkbeds... Maybe that is where her students stay overnight and she is going through the stuff they leave behind. What is shown in game only seems to be a scaled down simplified version of the actual world. LOL videogames.

TL;DR Sumona probably hires people to do chores. She is too busy doing more important things and Jesmona is almost always away on a business trip.

The Mistress of the Pollnivneach dungeons orders her scabarite followers to clean up the dungeon once in a while, but the scabarites are usually fastidious. However the scabarites are giant scarabs that walk upright and it is a giant smoky dungeon filled with various monsters, so their definition of clean is going to be different. The Mistress doesn't mind the smoke or dust and doesn't really do any chores except pray and prophesy and make inspirational speeches.

Keli Raven, as an adult, has minions. New recruits to the gang legitimate business take care of the menial tasks. Keli Raven as a teenager... Well, the Ravens lived in the impoverished south end of Varrock and I doubt they could afford servants. I am sure Keli had chores. I am sure she had an easy time convincing boys to do her chores for her while she went about more important business like picking pockets and extorting the rich folk from the north end.

The Wanderer in the desert, however, lacks minions. She has a tent, and goats, and cooking supplies. Maybe firewood too. There is most likely chores involved in all that like setting up the tent, keeping the tent tidy, making sure the tent pegs are secure, herding the goats, cooking, taking down the tent, etc. She seems to rely on travelers that pass by for supplies though and her tent smells of dead cats, so maybe she isn't so good at the whole chores thing. Maybe that is why she wanders the desert instead of living with any permanent or even nomadic settlement; she's a slob and no one can stand her. But then again there is an unfair amount of ginger hate in the part of the desert too. Poor Wanderer.

At least she does well taking care of those goats!

In summary, Amascut has minions. Except when she doesn't and then she's a slob.

And for the rest...

Fairy Fixit likes cleanliness, but likes efficiency more. A small house that isn't filled with memorabilia means less time has to be spent on housework so that more time can be spent relaxing or doing work-work and side projects.

The most Evil Chicken will do is teleport-dump trash that may accumulate in his/her living space.

Nicholas - He likes things very tidy, and being a bachelor, that pretty much defaults it all to him. Even when he was living with Janine, he still did most of the housework though. Because most people will Do It Wrong.

Travis - Not if he doesn't have to. When he was living with Nicholas, he never lifted a finger. Now that he lives with his sister, it's about an equal load, because she refuses to do everything. Travis complained about it for a little bit, but it got him no sympathy, so he grew up and just did the damn dishes. He doesn't ever make his bed though. It's a spite thing.

Gus - Another person who lives alone, and so much time in and out of prison has him keeping everything tidy out of habit. He spends more time at Milliways than he does at home though, so there's rarely anything to be tidied at home. The result is a landlord and a PO who both think he does nothing but sleep, though.

Gary - AHAHAHAHA. HAHA. HA. No. His canon's timeline spans about a week, and he never even changes his shirt.

Tim - Tim likes everything in its place as well, because he has a whole bunch of stuff that could easily swallow an entire room of it he let it. He's organised out of necessity, and it really pisses him off when Daisy's stuff gets in the way of his stuff. He has no problem at all doing the washing up, or the hoovering, and he does his own laundry. And occasionally Daisy's.

Loki - It depends on where he is. On Asgard, he rebels against tidiness to the point of chasing out any servants who have come to clean up his chambers for him. He throws his clothes and some of the more durable books around, and if he finds that someone's made his bed while he wasn't looking, he'll take all the blankets off and throw them on the floor. But it's a very superficial mess, because his desk and shelves and everything are very organised, and he always knows where everything is. On Earth, just being there at all is rebellion, so he doesn't bother with the extra mile. The apartment he keeps in Brooklyn is very clean, and he even does his own washing up sweeping, and all the other menial chores completely un-befitting of a prince. If he's gonna slum it with the humans, he might as well go all the way.

lol Yeah, kinda. At least it's a healthier way or rebelling than destroying planets and trying to kill half your immediate family, I guess.

Giovanni: Probably makes some sort of effort to keep his own bedroom in order. For the rest of the house, that's the sort of thing servants do, and even if the family don't have a lot of money anymore, there are appearances to keep up. (They still have an elderly butler, and his sister seems to have her own maid, so there's probably some sort of cleaner or housemaid as well).

Sharpe: Lives alone on an apple/pig farm with two young children. Yeah, he probably pays some woman from the village to help, but otherwise chores are his life.

Harry Callahan: Widower with two teenage daughters who believes in self-sufficiency. No doubt Nita and Dairine do their share, but he wouldn't expect them to do everything.

Nancy: ...is sort of disgusted by the idea of not doing chores. She says it's lazy.

Jonathan: Lives between the Watcher's Council, where they probably have domestics of some sort, and whatever den Angel and co are holed up in, where everyone cleans their own private space and takes turns keeping the shared areas liveable.

Michael Carpenter: ...what, did you think Charity ran around after seven children and did all the household chores all by herself? The older children have no doubt been given some tasks as they've grown up, but otherwise it's all Mom and Dad.

Roshaun: ...no. He's a prince, there have to be some perks.

Norrington: Lives permanently on the ship of the dead, but his cabin - or bunk below decks these days, as he's not the captain - is always scrupulously tidy.

Gavroche: Is a little bit of a neat freak. Call it a reaction against the chaos of his childhood.

Henry: probably does to some extent. Cleaning his room or some such. But not much.

Lois: Splits housework with whoever she's living with. While at the Kents' she probably only did dishes or something, but she has to do more as an adult. (But never let her cook. NEVER.)

Eriond: for a God, he actually really likes some chores! Blame Polgara. He doesn't have much need to do them, but if he's at Pol and Durnik's or in some situation where it's useful, he will totally do chores. Though he's not a fan of washing and drying dishes. He likes stables.

Tavi: used to be an apprentice shepherd. He had miscellaneous tasks around the farm, though never anything in the kitchen (which I don't think he'd've liked anyway). Always cleaning his room. Then he was a page and didn't have to do most standard chores (though he was mostly in charge of keeping his room intact), but a lot of running errands. Less so once he'd finished his first term at the Academy. When he started with the Legion, he had to muck out latrines for a while and other such lowly tasks for the lowest-ranked logistics officer. These days, though, chores are not really his thing. This will only get more and more true.
