Daily Entertainment: Character Revelation Edition!

Because I fell out of bed this morning with a WONDERFUL IDEA, I bring you today's Daily Entertainment!

Character Revelations! How do you as a mun generally get ideas about your characters? From the characters? From threads? From songs? From just sitting down and thinking about them? What's the oddest revelation you've ever had about a character?

For the record, I get a lot of character revelation in the shower. Just sayin'.

I rarely get ideas if I try to have ideas. They just turn up, most of the time. Songs are a definite inspiration, for atmosphere if nothing else. And a re-watch/read of canon always turns up something new.

And bar-related interactions, of course. I never plan a specific thing to happen, because then it comes out feeling flat. I just let pups talk to each other, and run with what turns up.

I'm too brain dead to think of oddest revelations re: pups. Though Javert being transfixed by a toaster was pretty damn weird.

Speaking of in-bar interactions I can't wait to see Valjean's face when he meets Noriko as a nineteen-year-old X-Man. So Very Different.

Also the toaster was priceless.

I think a lot of my insights come from the App and ficlets. Daily entertainments bring insights, as do threads and plots, such as the kid plot and Jess avoid thinking about her childhood. I even get insights from playlists. Trolling fan opinion helps, too. Oh and canon rereading/rewatching.

My 45 minute commute can be as good as a shower for the same.

Oddest revelation...hrmm, how about Jess loving Funk Metal or Ben loving Surf music? I'll add more as they occur to me.

I think I'd like to add pup reactions to other threads, even ones they are not involved in, and OOMs. Sometimes I read the work of others and my pup's reaction is quite amusing and enlightening.

I get ideas for Tommy from canon, like little details about Tommy's backstory that I can expand upon. Then definitely from threads and interactions, things that other characters ask him that I haven't really thought about, so I'm prompted to come up with a plausible answer on the spot. Some of the best ones come from other muns, such as the revelation that Tommy being taken hostage during this heist by a gang of girls is the reason for his deep-seated issues with women, AND IT'S (HILARIOUSLY) TRUE, because in canon he finds himself constantly surrounded by women who pretty much have a tight leash on him. And then sometimes, but rarely, I take some things from Denis Leary's personal life and turn them into canon (for instance, being a fan of The Rifleman as a child, because it makes sense in context what with the whole cowboy thing).

Showers are usually where I come up with AUs.

Ehm... Mostly in regards to Amascut, music is usually the inspiration for plot and DE's are good for character details. Fanon can be interesting, but I try not to pay too much attention to it, since it can get squicky. For some reason Amascut is a chocoholic and I have no idea why.

Ideas for Fairy Fixit usually come from threads.

From EVERYWHERE!

From the characters themselves, from their world and canon, from meta (sometimes accepting meta, sometimes completely rejecting), from talking to other people, from threading and writing fic. From me being completely contrary, sometimes (my Natasha doesn't like Tolstoy, purely as a reaction against a comic that went all 'Natasha found a blood-soaked Tolstoy novel and it ~changed her life and taught her about ~love' because it and the attitude behind it, annoys me). From all the books I've read, and from the research I do along the way.

So, eeeeverywhere :D

Uh, oddest? I have...no idea. Most of my revelations I find tend to make sense in the context I've thought about them. Example, Natasha doesn't like tango music, at all. It looks odd outside context, but in the context of a story going about that during the Siege of Stalingrad, the NKVD played tango music inter-spaced with 'btw, you guys are totes going to die :D' over loudspeakers to freak out the German troops, I think it makes tons of sense.

Most often, I'll be intaking some other canon (of any type; it happens slightly more with music than with anything else, but books and movies and so on all seem pretty much equal) and something about what I'm reading/seeing/hearing goes pwing! (Not all pwing!s are of this sort.) One of my characters then tells me that something from that other canon is or was connected to their situation/life/past/whatever.

Metaing about canon usually helps. As the Hannibal fandom is the fandom with all the meta, I get lots of ideas delivered by other people that I can sift through and consider. Millicanon developing helps as well (hello, Teja and cats!), as does idle pondering while going about the business of daily life.-

Oh my, mine come from all over the place. Canon rewatches, threads, meta, discussions that don't even have to do with the topic, fic, lots and lots of mine for Charles comes from fic I've written and read. Also walks and driving, those are some of my most creative places so I'll get ideas for RP and sometimes those are revelations but not always.

Oddest, I'm not sure of but one of my most unexpected was that Moist was bisexual, just suddenly he was flirting with a guy and I went well okay then.

Not sure I have ever had a revelation, per se. More like, I try to fill in the blanks. About Knox's past and Charlie's life as an orphan and as a hero, about how Howard Stark came to be a pilot. It sort of evolves, and a lot of the time I fall asleep thinking about my pups. I guess it's a process more than anything else.
