Weekend DE: The tram edition

 From [personal profile] yakalskovich :
The Tramdom. Sometimes, random fandom crops up in the tram (or other parts of RP). There was an MCU Loki in the tram on my way to work the other day. WTF world?? On the other hand, I went to Verona and Ravenna on a holiday some months after I started playing Teja, and saw places that the historical Teja necessarily must have known and been in. There was this Roman pavement laid bare in one fairly central spot, and I knew, "Teja must have walked there once", which was -- odd. So, care to share any memorable ways that your fandom or your character (or those they are closely connected with in Milliways) have assailed you in RL, and also, anything you have done in RL to come closer to your character?

XMFC had minimates, I have a few of them and you can still find them sometimes at Toys r'us. They come in sets of two and due to the Amazon seller being sucky, I came out ahead with the Charles and Shaw set and the Erik and Mystique one. Hank's paired with Azazel and here's a link. What's nice is they weren't too pricey, about eight dollars a box. They're not too tricky to find online and I've sometimes run across them in toy stores. Otherwise they didn't seem to make much stuff for XMFC which sucks.

I have a crowbar I keep in my bathroom. Mostly I tell people I bought it in case I need it, because a situation where you suddenly need a crowbar to open something up and don't have one is an ugly situation; some people see it and think I bought it for zombie apocalypse preparation. The truth is that it was an impulse buy at Home Depot because I was thinking of Gordon at the time. I've also encountered a mountain bike in Hoboken that had a Borntrager 'Crowbar' model handlebar, and the person who parked it looked suspiciously like a college-age Gordon.

I went to a target shooting range last year for a deal they had that involved safety instruction and .22 rifle shooting and our choice of AR15 or twelve-gauge shotgun shooting. I chose the shotgun option because I wanted to know what it felt like when Ellen fired one of those things.

And this isn't my canon or my pup, but- I live in the Boston area and I work in Boston, and Boston has buildings from most periods of its history still standing in a lot of areas alongside more modern ones. Playing Assassin's Creed 3- Ratonhnhaké:ton/Connor's canon- is a weird experience as a result, starting from the moment early in game when I had to put the controller down because Haytham Kenway was walking through a street full of people and market stalls and I saw the Old State House and went OH GOD THAT'S WHERE MY SUBWAY STOP IS, THAT EXACT BUILDING, HE'S WALKING ON STATE STREET, I KNOW EXACTLY WHERE THIS IS. There've been a few points when I've had Connor climb buildings purely because those buildings are still there in modern Boston and I get a kick out of the idea of climbing the Old South Meeting House's roof or what have you. Maximum weirdness will be achieved next year because I plan to get myself to Boston Common (which is in the game and is still recognizable) on the first Monday in June to see the election of officers and sergeants of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Massachusetts, which is not in the game but which predates the game's time period because AHAC has been in existence in Boston since 1638 and has held that election on the Common every year, so it could just as easily be in the game for all that I know.

Last year during the Slenderman plot, things about Slendy seemed to pop up everywhere. Granted, it was leading up to Halloween and people like their scary stuff in October, but it seemed like there was a lot more Slenderman-related stuff last year than there was this year. It was a little freaky at times.

I sometimes have Fireman Mojo(TM). When I least expect it, I come across a group of firemen by a parked truck, or a firehouse with the bay doors open (and so I get to look inside at the shiny, shiny rigs). I've met firemen grocery shopping. I've had a firetruck randomly pull up while I was waiting at a bus stop, and was tempted to joke, "If I give you $2, can you drive me home?" Now there's a firehouse near my new job. And every time a truck speeds past with sirens screaming, I watch it while the "Rescue Me" theme song plays in my head.

I even went with Kate-mun to a Firefighters Appreciation Weekend event, and it was just incredibly meta, along with visiting some of the spots where Tommy took her during her trip to NYC.

I've visited the NYC Fire Museum, and one of the highlights of that was handling actual firefighting gear.

I also showed Denis Leary my fanart of Tommy and Lou and he posted it on his Twitter. *crylaugh*

Man, I kept meaning to visit the Fire Museum when I lived in Hoboken. Never got around to it.

It's a great little museum with a lot of history packed into a three-story firehouse.

And you just reminded me that their annual Santa Claus rescue is next month where Santa is rescued from the roof with a tower ladder. Y'know, like you do.

Oh forgot to mention: a couple weeks ago I was in midtown Manhattan when I found myself walking behind a guy who looked exactly like Tommy from behind. Tall, shaggy blond hair, same weathered brown leather jacket, blue jeans, brown boots. Seriously, it was freakishly uncanny. I kept snickering to myself as I followed, wanting to run up to him and tell him if he knew that he looked like Denis Leary from behind, but good thing I lost him in a crowd before that happened.

Back when I was playing Jane Drew, I did once drag my family to Mevagissy, Cornwall, the fishing village on which Trewissick in Over Sea, Under Stone and Greenwitch by Susan Cooper was based. To the point of forcing them to climb the hills up to the house overlooking the town, which served as the main villain's base of operations during Under Sea, Under Stone. And a white cat that lived around the Bed and Breakfast we were staying at adopted me while we were there.

Nope, not personally. We don't have any Breaking Bad pups in bar, but if we did I would be bumping into those locations all the time. Supposedly I walked past the Denny's where a certain Thor scene was filming while filming was going on.

Such is life in Albuquerque.

But my pups, nope. If you are in London, though, avoid Tobacco Docks today and maybe tomorrow unless you want to bump into an Amascut. It is unlikely any one will cosplay her because... villain and not one with a consistent look besides the tan skin and red hair, but who knows.

The best example I've had of this happened a number of years ago, I found this great image of a little redheaded boy that was perfect for young Will. Then I was in New York visiting a Millimun who doesn't play anymore and there was the same image as an ad.

I'm hoping to get myself one of those polo shirts with the X-Men logo embroidered on it to wear someday, because I love that sort of small fandom touch.

Also thinking of Will when I was in elementary school I had a Halloween costume as him and my father cut me a quarter staff. It lived in the corner of my room until we moved out of that house.
