I've had a good week that I plan on writing up in greater detail but I'm glad to share a lot of it here. I finally got out of my job applying for rut and sent out a number of applications. Also I went with a camera club to an all day expedition to Longwood Gardens, a place of my childhood, which was wonderful.

My big RP news is that I EPed my newest pup, Ivan Vorpatril and tagged him out to talk to Olivier de Bretagne, Allie Pennington and Helena and Red. Its wonderful to have him in Milliways.

Earlier in the week, Charles had an EP where he's crafting his apology to Jemma Simmons. Fry gave him some good advice on it.

I'm not actually sure I can stop Jason flirting with Charles. It's just too much fun.

Oh don't, Charles enjoys it. He's just used to having to be careful with his flirting.

The Krampus plot concluded gloriously! The abductees returned, Krampus was chained, and then there was a party. Some people (as in Jean Valjean and Autor) even felt sorry for the poor monster...

Otherwise, I think I have seen enough adaptations of Les Misérables now to qualify for the fandom and app Madame Thénardier next month.-

YOU FOUND PERKINS!VERT.

Gayyyyyyest Javert evar. But he did a good job, even if that version of Valjean makes me want to shake him in frustration.

[personal profile] yakalskovich 2014-01-12 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, as I said, that version of Valjean talked in an American twang that sounded more like somebody from a Western, and when he was fleeing, with all that silly hair and beard, he looked like friggin' Bigfoot, and he ran in that silly loping gait.

But Perkins!vert definitely has a certain something. The boots! The pointy looks! The eyebrows! All that poise! He's certainly the best-looking Javert among all the versions I have seen. Also, he way he starts obsessing with Valjean (strange slip in taste, there) right away in Toulon, he totally had the hots for the man and then severely suppressed the whole thing. You could positively see the steam coming from his ears at times.-

Perkins!vert is awesome, and you're right, there was virtually no subtext in the attraction. It was just there. It makes for a fun watch, and I found the sewer scene really poignant. But the movie as a whole drives me mental.

No Thénardiers! No Éponine! Ages spent in Toulon! Wobbling cameras! That silly castle! Javert and Valjean inexplicably American while everybody else has a British accent!

But yes, when they finally were talking in the sewers, and there was almost a connection, and then Jsvert is gone and Valjean almost anxiously calls out his name, that was positively painful. But then, they bungled the suicide again...

I am so sadfkj over all these non-musical movies messing up the suicide. I suppose it's difficult because he's on his own, so relies entirely on demeanour. Musical versions have the music, obvs; I've yet to see a non-musical suicide that works for me.
yakalskovich: (Mummy smurf)

[personal profile] yakalskovich 2014-01-12 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
The 2000 version with Malkovich does everything up to the physical suicide right, the state he is in comes across quite clearly, and then he walks into the water with his hands cuffed behind his back instead of jumping off anything, which takes away that element of a fall, which is so crucial, really. Why? Why did they needlessly bungle it? Perkins!vert, on the other hand, ends himself so suddenly, anybody who didn't know the story will just go 'What the fuck just happened?' Quite apart from somebody tipping a dummy with a hat over the railing instead of even using a stunt person.

There's a great gif of that railing-fall around somewhere, and it's totally hilarious. The Malkovert one, I can only think they were going for an impression of him quietly sinking away and leaving the others to be free. Which...could work. But didn't, in that instance.
yakalskovich: (Reality is a rotten place to be)

[personal profile] yakalskovich 2014-01-12 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
He wasn't sinking, he was wading.-

But eventually, there was just a Hat. Symbolic perhaps, in that the symbol of office remains while the man disappears - which is why I think it could work if done differently - but ultimately unsatisfying for a viewer.

[personal profile] yakalskovich 2014-01-12 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
It was definitely better than the Perkins!vert suicide, but it fell short of the intense painfulness of the scenes before that.

Feel better soon <3

YAY for your crafts. :)

Despite its brevity, this oom has been planned for a whiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiile, and I'm very pleased with it. (And, yes, I really do need to incorporate Nat's new ringtone somewhere)

In out-of-RP news, I finished a fic for a new fandom! And people like it! And I finished a thing! All shiny good things.

I finally got back to Bruce Wayne and X, immediately after finding out about the existence of Jason Todd.

The Krampus plot was fun, and then there were OOMs of Javert being Javert, so that was business as usual. He also had an EP, and Teja just broke him a bit, which I never complain about. *grin*

An eventful week for me, both in RL and in Milliways.

In real life, I registered for my first classes since my career change. Also I got myself a used car! Let me put it this way: it's the sort of thing that James May would buy in one of those Top Gear challenges where they have to pick up a car for 1000 pounds, which he then ends up winning because Clarkson and Hammond's cars both broke down. I'm very pleased with it. It's a Chrysler, and it seats about 20.

Milliwise, I brought in a new pup in Marge Gunderson, who has good threads going with Jason Todd, Gavroche, and Teja. I also finally, finally, sweet merciful Christ FUCKING FINALLY finished that Garyn OOM I started the week before goddamn Halloween. This has led into a nice ongoing EP with Ibani. He's also currently in the middle of a very grumpy conversation with Javert.

So yeah...fun!

Jason does so very much love winding up police officers. It was fun playing with her.

AHAHAHA. I actually saw a car parked on my street the other day that I told [personal profile] minkhollow that I thought would be something that the Top Gear boys would get for an American challenge. (It didn't look like it was running that well in the New England summer, either.)

Good on you for the new car! One of these days, I'll have to get a new one. Argh.

Good lord I never expected my dragon game to overtake so much of my waking time, but Flight Rising has officially joined my obsessions list. Thus why I haven't done any RP despite promising myself I would. Can't turn away...

I bought genes, gave two of them to a couple of dragons, and am not waiting patiently for the end of the month to get here so I can buy gems and get another circuit scroll.

Maybe one of the new coatl scrolls too. Snakebirds yay!

RL-wise, I've got a new apartment I'll be moving into. Nice one bedroom with more space than this bachelor has, and it has central air too [always a plus].

Just don't know yet when the move will be...

Had a wonderful week. I let my new pup loose on the bar and already he's making friends and finding his way around with help. (For which he's very grateful.)

Jay is having a wonderful time causing trouble, discussing comics, celebration the return of friends, hanging out with friends and possibly freaking William out.

In Real Life I may be a slow in the coming week. It's midsummer and blazing hot in Australia. This week is the hottest it's been here in many years and my poor little laptop doesn't cope very well.

Have you seen the TV version with Derek Jacobi?

[personal profile] equal_of_any_man 2014-01-14 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
I love them too. Reading them is like going home to an old friend.

I have the TV series. Most of them are very good and Derek Jacobi is brilliant but a couple of the episodes are so far from the books that they're almost painful to watch.
