DE: The great out of doors

I survived the long weekend! How long was it? I'm looking forward to going to work. How was your weekend?

Anyway, onto the topic. Since I was practically camping the past few days (I do not advise setting up on concrete even if that is all that is available), what is camping for you pup? Tents? Timeshare rentals? A hotel room? A backpack?

If they're from canons that don't really do vacation camping, how to they feel about sleeping in the outdoors? Or how do they feel about those that choose to do it?

Yeaahhhh, I was gonna say, for Ellen 'camping' is 'traveling to somewhere more than a day's walk away'. She never does it alone, because that's just asking to get killed in your sleep; Dogmeat takes the watch while she's sleeping, and she usually only sleeps in snatches when she's traveling anyway, just in case. The idea of doing it for recreation is kind of baffling as far as she's concerned.

Will lives basically outdoors in Sherwood, there are caves but when the weather's nice, its better to be under the trees.

Charles' idea of camping is going to a lodge in the Adirondacks though he probably went camping once or twice with the boy scouts. I don't think he enjoyed it that much, he'd much rather have four walls, warmth and proper food.

Moist can camp, he knows how to survive in a dangerous outdoors as he's had some tough nights on the road. He would just prefer not to. Inns exist for a good reason.

Ivan's preferred method of camping is staying at Vorkosigan Surleau, gorgeous lake house that's owned by his cousin, aunt and uncle. As a soldier, he has actually camped, Barrayaran men are expected to be able to set up wherever they end up. He just likes his comforts.

Sameth enjoys camping though for him in the Old Kingdom, that's also traveling in some places where there aren't inns. In Lirael, he mentions how right it feels to be riding beside his father with their guards and facing the Old Kingdom. In Ancelstierre, he might have done some camping as part of school but I don't think a lot of it.

William is another where camping for fun wouldn't make sense to him as sleeping outdoors is what he does when he's away from home and out riding the herd or moving the herd.

Jane would never think of camping, its not ladylike and not something done in her time unless you were in the army, on an expedition somewhere or lived on the road. She's read about it, but its not something she has a lot of interest in trying.

Demeter loves being outside and the land loves her as well, she will happily sleep outside if the weather's nice.

Tummus likes his comfortable house but if need be, he would sleep outside during fine weather. He wouldn't call it camping since having tents and pavilions outside is how Narnians gather and live at certain times of the year.

The Pirate King is happy to sleep outside though he'd prefer his captain's cabin.

Sunshine doesn't do camping. For most people in her world, a rented cabin or something similar was as close to roughing it as they're comfortable with getting. You need a solid structure (and preferably plenty of wards) between you and what's out there in the night. Before her trip to Middle Earth with Glorfindel, Sunshine had never slept under the open sky.

For Yrael, camping is usually done on the way from somewhere to somewhere else, and involves someone else making a diamond of protection, a fire, and catching some sort of dinner. Not him doing these things, of course, unless the person he's stuck camping with is completely inept. He would prefer to sleep indoors, but on the road in the Old Kingdom, it's not often possible.

For some of Amascut's alter egos, living outdoors is life. Specifically, the Wanderer in the Desert lives that way. The Wanderer does have a tent, however, because sleeping under a clear sky at night is the one way you can paradoxically freeze to death out in the desert. It is not a problem for her health, but it is one for her credibility. There are only so many caves she can shelter in and, well, she likes to wander.

Fairy Fixit works outdoors part of the time. She lives indoors thank you very much.

Mary: Camping?? When there's a hunting party the servants set up luncheon out doors, so it's not as if the Crawleys can't rough it. But... no.

Carol: She was in military intelligence. She had hella survival skills when called for, even before she had superpowers, but her schedule doesn't really allow for camping as a recreational activity.

Stiles: The problem with camping is the wi-fi sucks. But you do get to build fires, which is a plus. Doesn't change the fact that it's not really something the Stilinski's have done since his mom died.

Jim: He's probably done his share of sleeping outside, yeah. Granted, not always in tents, and not always in the wild, and not always intentionally. Does blacking out in an alley count?

Leela: Are you kidding? She practically lived outside for most of her life.

Kane: He can do it when required. He has almost certainly marched in the campaigns of many great armies, serving as an aide.

Caius: He'll do whatever the Empire asks him to do. Most of his work is based in cities, but I'd imagine he has had to rough it in the forests at least a few times.

Garyn: Lived on the streets between the ages of 12 and 13. Has gone on long overland journeys to hunt down bandits and other bounties, and even marched in columns of mercenaries and militia. He's certainly familiar with laying his head down in rough places.

Marge: Recreational camping is, as they say, a thing up in Minnesota. She and Norm have gone on more than a few camping and fishing trips around the Brainerd Lakes area.
