DE: What's your sign?

 From [personal profile] gavin62truck :
Chinese New Year is January 31 and 2014 is the Year of the Horse. If your pup has a birth date, what animal are they according to the Chinese Zodiac? Do the personality traits match your pup's? If you don't know their birth date or it doesn't apply, which sign do you think they'd be?

By the way, I used this site for more of the details of traits and stuff, because Wikipedia was underwhelming me a bit.

Henry Mills: Probably Snake, being a 2001 birth and not, I think, in early January. That said, I don't think it particularly fits him. Neither does Dragon, which is the previous one, so meh.

Eriond: not being on Earth, this does not apply--but for obvious reasons his sign is the Horse. The site I looked at had a list of traits which totally do not apply to Eriond, mind, but that doesn't matter. Actually, it doesn't matter because it isn't even as if his sign is the Chinese Zodiac Horse. His sign is Horse.

Lois Lane: the Tiger (1986). That actually can kinda fit her, too.

Tavi: is not on Earth, and quite frankly as there is no wolverine or tasmanian devil in that list I am skeptical of a fit. That said, Alera is explicitly set about 2000 years, give or take some number of decades lost to time, after Augustus Caesar--AKA Tavi is actually really close to 'modern day' when it comes to his time frame. If I scaled it--as I probably would simply for conveniences' sake--as book one being in 2004 CE, that would make him a Snake too (born in '89), but he's just not. So I'll just pick the closest and quite obvious one, because-- yeah. Dragon.

Mark turned 18 in April 2004 (that is, he is shown turning 18 during the April 2004 issue of Invincible). Which makes him a Tiger.

Hm. The only one of mine that might fit into the Chinese Zodiac is Annabelle, and the Rooster sign doesn't fit her very well.

Kreyu has been reincarnated multiple times, so I'm not sure HOW birth signs would even work in that case. I suppose I could teasingly place her as a dragon, as she is an actual, literal, dragon.

Ibani is from a galaxy far far away. Her 'official' birth-date is in March, because the Empire has an official 'natal day' shared by all citizens whose actual date of birth is unknown, for record keeping purposes. Ibani has never celebrated a birthday, so she's going to be very surprised when Bar gives her a cupcake with a candle in it. :-D As to which sign she'd be, none of the signs really seem to fit.

Tommy's birth year is 1960, so he's a Metal Rat, and the characteristics are...pretty damn accurate. Positive traits include charm, charisma (what? he can be charming and charismatic when feels like it), shrewdness, industriousness, and tenaciousness, and maybe not exactly eloquence, but he does like to talk and speechify.

Negative traits include everything that's listed. Not even exaggerating about that. Self-destructive, exploitative, scheming, arrogant, amoral, jealous, etc. As for health risks, he has addiction problems, and I'd say he's pretty narcissistic and antisocial.

According to the other site linked above, the rat is the sign of "charm and aggressiveness." Tommy does have more acquaintances than close friends, and the closest friends that he does have, he treats like family, and he's loyal and protective toward them. He keeps his problems to himself and doesn't tend to confide, and he's often mean and narrow-minded-- but honest, in that he tends to speak his mind (which is interesting, because I think he shares some traits with the Snake, which tends to lie and exaggerate when it suits him).

ETA: The metal aspect also fits Tommy to a T. Unreasonable, inflexible, stubborn, won't let go of situations even when no longer feasible.

Cata, Sam, Imp and Red are all from non-Earth worlds; Apollo is another pantheon's god, your argument is invalid; I haven't given Ruby a curse-assigned birthday; and not only have I not given Woolly a birthday, but I don't much feel like counting back far enough to get 187whatever's animal. XD

That leaves Claudia and Regulus. Claud's a Rabbit, apparently (1987), which doesn't fit her at all; Regulus gets Ox (1961), which actually fits fairly well.

Amascut is too old. Haha. But Rat and Ox seem to fit. The associated maladjustments listed in the Wikipedia article seem to fit as well, but they cast a rather wide net...

Fire is her element, naturally.

Earth birth dates? It is to laugh.

Now going by Lee's link and trying to match them up by personality traits... Kain's an Ox, and Felix might be as well, but I'm less certain of that. Not sure enough about Fluttershy.

Thor: WHO KNOWS what year he was born in, but it wasn't on Earth anyway. Trowa, Clare: no known birthdate, and in Clare's case, uh, no known calendar and also not on Earth. Regan's age I have not bothered to pin down sufficiently to pick a birth year for her.

Enjolras has no canonical or millicanonical birthday, but he has a canonical age, so we can do the math. The trouble is that, uh, he has two conflicting canonical ages, because Victor Hugo cares not for your petty math. I mentally split the difference for Milliways purposes... which gives us a third year. Oops.

Assuming the Milliways split-the-difference age, he was born in 1808, or Dragon. Born leader! Idealist! Aggressive and determined! ...Born monarchs with a tendency to impose their will on others AHAHAHAHAHAHA. *wipes eyes*

Uh. Let's say that half fits and half really, really does not.

(The most logical canonical age option gives us 1806, or Tiger, which... actually works really well in most ways. Huh. Cool! The Victor-Hugo-can't-math option is 1812, or Goat, which describes his friend Prouvaire really well but is basically the antithesis of Enjolras, seeing as how it's all about being a romantic artistic worrywart.)

River was born August 9, 2500 -- the year is calculation, and the date is Millicanon. Rat, then. Charm and aggressiveness, perpetual discontent and perfectionism... this is another that half-works, I think.

(Trait-wise: Trowa's probably Ox, Thor is totally Dragon, Regan I'm not sure about, River doesn't really match up to any but is probably closest to Monkey, Clare is probably Dog, and Tiger really does work best for Enjolras.)

I had to dig around a bit more to find listings for birthdates before 1924. Dr Thurlow, being born in August 1856, is a Fire Dragon. It doesn't fit perfectly -- they're not quite as egotistical nor as effective of a leader as the description, mainly -- but it does broadly apply.

I myself am a Metal Goat (January 1992). Or Ram, or Sheep. I thought being a Sheep sounded incredibly lame when I was a kid and insisted that as a 1992 kid I was a Monkey, but now I enjoy describing my zodiac sign as the Electric Sheep. And I have to admit that the description of a Metal Goat/Ram/Sheep sounds a lot more like me than the Water Monkey.

Aradia is an alien. The obvious choice is the Ram (aka Sheep or Goat) though. Mind you, since the trolls' timeline is synchronised with the human kids', they're all the same approximate age, and the humans were all born in late 1995 or 1996, you could argue that they're all Pigs and Rats. Honestly I don't think any of the three sound a lot like Aradia traitswise, but... Ram.

Deponent is a Metal Dog. The guy shown in my icon was canonically born in 1900, but the January 1 birthdate I gave him (in honor of Warren Ellis' Century Babies*) doesn't fit his temperament; he's more a Metal Rat than an Earth Pig. Max, on the other hand, works equally well as an Earth Pig or Earth Ox, both of which fit with his canonical birth year of 1889 (and the latter is what goes with the specific birthdate picked by the guy who created his journal over on LJ).

None of my other folken has a canonical birthdate, unless you count the day Ralph's home game was plugged in, which would make him a Water Dog, which not so much.
