DE: I feel the need

Sorry the daily entertainment is late today.

I've noticed lately I seem to be developing a lead foot, which has me wondering, how about our characters? Do they feel the need for speed? I realize we don't all come from canons with internal combustion engines, so how about we broaden the topic to cover any means of transportation. After all, a hair raising ride on a wagon can be just as thrilling as going 80 mph.

Hannibal drives a stately Bentley. In a stately, regular manner. Canonically.

Teja is a dead Ostrogoth, but he's got access to Italy where he has a motorbike to go really fast with, and (lately) a little car which he drives in a, let's say, Italy compatible manner, as evidenced in this current thread. As to say, he drives like a Goth berserker armed with a battle axe?

I had a phrasebook once called Wicked Italian that offered phrases specifically for use in taxis. The one I remember most is 'Quindi, questo e il nuovo aereo combattimento italiano! Ingegnosa mimetizzazone!'.

("So, this is the new Italian fighter jet! Ingenious camouflage!")

**snerk**

Yep, that's what I have been hinting at that Teja drives like. As if he'd rather have a fighter jet.
damncompass: let's try to teleport! (brb (lol))

Joshua teleports.

... it goes well now, when he's not stalled for twelve years.

When he's not teleporting, he drives a blue convertible at a way-too-large rate of speed. Thank goodness he lives in rural South Dakota.

Gordon's not much on driving one way or the other, but he used to do downhill mountain bike racing and quite liked it until he went over the handlebars at nearly fifty miles an hour and snapped a collarbone. He's okay at driving, but unless something is trying to kill him he doesn't do it all that fast.

Shephard likes to take his motorcycle up to a decent speed, but contrary to whatever image he may have developed, he prefers to keep it well within controllable parameters. Mostly because any road he's on is likely to have animals suddenly try to cross it without warning and the Buell does not really do well with roadkill. He does not like flying at any speed, ever. Borealis is not really designed for speed unless it's point-to-point teleportation, and he's fine with that.

Pentecost would prefer helicopters to be faster and Jaegers to be able to move through the water a bit more efficiently.

Edward Kenway's ideas of speed mostly revolve around fast ships, which he's quite fond of.

Santo has a silver convertible sports car, which he is very good at driving at high speed, although I don't know how much of that is done for fun and how much just for getting through the plot.

Medic doesn't really care; speed mostly matters in terms of running from one patch of cover to another, for him.

Varric is not a big fan of high speed travel but will occasionally write about thrilling breakneck chases through the winding streets of Lowtown, because his readers enjoy it.

And Ellen is fine with the maximum speeds attainable by a charging Brahmin. She's ridden in airplanes and Vertibirds and doesn't mind them too much- they're usually compact enough to feel like she's in a particularly noisy Vault rather than something scary- but her idea of fast travel is purely limited to what she or her cows can do on foot.

Ha. *looks at roster* Well. Apparently I have something of a theme here.

Okay, Trowa: combat pilot (of giant robots, but nonetheless) since childhood; yes. He'll judge his speed by how many civilians are around him as much as anything, but he chafes at sensible speed limits.

Thor: is, in slowtime, cheerfully trash-talking motorcycles at Coyote for being too slow. Yes.

River: is fairly sensible about how she flies and doesn't really drive -- hallucinations are not great for this, although they don't interfere with her spaceship piloting, but Wash is the one who does any fancy flying. If someone else is in control, though, she really loves a good burst of speed. Especially with the wind in her hair. (Hi, Crowley.)

Regan: is also fairly sensible... but secretly it goes a little against the grain. If she's in a situation where she can open up with whatever vehicle she's driving or animal she's riding, she takes glee in the opportunity.

Enjolras: is from a time when the speed of a fast horse was the top traveling speed for most people; locomotives had been invented, but there wasn't really any kind of network of passenger trains in France quite yet. So he wouldn't quite know what to do in a car or plane, and it would take him a while to adjust to it. Within that, though -- yeah, this is a guy who likes going fast. (Relatedly, an impatient guy.) He's not a thrill-seeker, and he wouldn't go out of his way to find time for a gallop, but if the chance presented itself he'd go faster rather than slower and enjoy the opportunity.

Cosette: ditto Enjolras, except that she also hasn't had much chance to do things like gallop over hills. She was raised in an enclosed setting (and, before that, with neither money nor leisure time), and since then it's been all decorous walks and occasional decorous carriage rides. If/when she ever gets a chance to try something speedy, whether it's a horseback gallop or a car ride, she'll love it.

Edit: forgot Clare! Uh, she can move faster than anything but another Claymore or a powerful yoma already; it's part of the whole Claymore package. Possibly this is also faster than a car. Anyway, she doesn't seem to particularly get a thrill from speed -- it's a tool for her, but not something she enjoys for its own sake. I don't think she'd care much about a fast vehicle, even one that goes faster than she can. So she's my exception.

This reminds me; I have the craziest urge to introduce Cosette to pants. I know, it's a huge step in the direction of 'haha, no' but it's in my head.

Ha!

Nori is totally welcome to try. Cosette isn't likely to try them, because she's perfectly willing to grant that it might be the custom in Nori's home, but it's weird and immodest to her personally, and she doesn't have much urge to be non-conformist for its own sake. (There definitely are both women and men in her day who wear clothing not of their gender -- this is well within the era of George Sand, and some of the Romantics got up to basically everything you can think of -- but I'm not sure Cosette has heard of such things.) If she were visiting someone else's world, or had some other immediate practical cause, she might be willing... but she'd be deeply uncomfortable the whole time, most likely.

Anyway, feel free!

Teleportationisfastenoughthankyou

However, moving through Euclidean 3 dimensional space in a manner that is nice to Newtonian physics is also a thing in canon, but it is a pretty low tech set of worlds that are dealt with in canon save for any technical hoobajoobery Fairy Fixit might deal with, the automatons in Guthix's employ, and/or whatever is happening on the human homeworld of Teragard. Teragardians may or may not have a space-faring culture, so who knows. There are some people who will deny the canonical existence of horses but will accept the existence of hornless unicorns and wingless pegasi, but I am not one of them.

Where am I going with this? Ugh, I am rambling. Anyhow, no, I don't think any of mine have a need to go fast. The fastest Amascut ever travels in a Newtonian friendly fashion is riding a tornado during the first stages of tornado teleport. Which, thinking of it... is pretty fast and full of acceleration. Plus, she manages not to be a ragdoll being tossed about in the wind. However, she only uses Tornado Teleport if the situation calls for a dramatic entrance or exit. Fairy Fixit flies on her own power and I think she likely tops out at 30mi/h or 50km/h. She spends most of her time hovering, though.

Eheheheheheheheheh.

Noriko has the ability to channel electricity into superspeed. So she's been clocked in the hundreds-of-miles-an-hour range. (Canonically it took her like three hours to go from the mansion in New York to Colorado. Yeah.)

Ganymede enjoys speed, but he's just as likely to gallop on a horse as he is to drive fast. His car is a Ferrari, but also limited to paved and maintained roads.

My only potential really is TJ, whom I haven't apped or tested out yet but is lurking in the back of my head.

Ace is not allowed to drive. Ever. This is a standing rule. She does, however, have a motorbike that maybe kinda sorta (definitely) travels in time.

And space.

She has not, and will not, ever tell Cora it does this.

Balthazar has a Phantom Coupe, which he drives with the dignity deserving of a great car such as that one. ... He also can turn it into an Italian sports car and drive fast enough to terrify his young apprentice.

Clara, eventually, will get a motorcycle. She will drive this motorcycle sanely, as someone in this relationship has to drive like a competent adult. Oswin, on the other hand, seems to believe that the gas petal is made of AWESOME and should be used liberally. We're looking to you, Clint, to sort this out.

Katya definitely likes fast motorcycles, but when not in a place where going fast is okay, she's fine with obeying speed limits and such. It keeps her off of human radar, and when you can tweak probability lines so you only get green lights, you get there almost as fast anyway.

William... isn't entirely sure why speed is valued over maneuverability in this conversation? A ship may be fast, but unless she can handle well, she isn't much of a ship.

Sam can and does participate in car chases, but honestly she just likes driving, irregardless of speed.

Bones thinks you're all lunatics, and he's not going to be the one to patch you all back together when your fast-moving-transport-of-choice crashes. (Yes he is.)

Glorfindel loves to let his horse run as fast as it wants. It makes all the bells chime. :D

Will loves going fast on a galloping horse and fast cars are fun.

Charles likes fast cars but they're not huge for him, I feel like for his time, he's surprisingly not terribly car mad. Something I need to think on.

Moist is at his happiest when galloping on an open road with no one behind him.

Ivan also loves going fast through for him its in his sporty groundcar or a lightflyer.

William is another fan of fast horses, fast cars and motorcycles are new to him but he likes them.

Sameth enjoys riding and being in cars but speed isn't as much of a drive for him as for some of my others.

Jane likes to ride and I imagine she doesn't get many chances to gallop.

Demeter actually likes being on the ground, speed isn't really her thing.

Tumnus is another who's happy to travel at the speed of his own feet.

The Pirate King owns a fast ship and loves it.

... ... All right, from the top.

Felix doesn't really like any method of travel other than his own feet, and while he's not particularly slow he's not going to be winning any dashes soon.

Fluttershy... is not into speed, we'll just say that. Though she has been known to be excited while on a train.

Kain... how to put this. He can get up some impressive velocity vertically, but horizontally it's not so much his thing. His world has airships and hovercrafts, but he never seems particularly interested in either except as a tool to get places.

Clementine: Has a lead foot and uses her status as a cop to wiggle out of speeding tickets. Also canonically drives high/drunk. Yep.

Dixie: Will probably engage in a horseback riding contests if called to it. She's less a speedster than a brat about things in general.

Juliet: Obeys the law (IS the law) but will speed if necessary to catch a perp.

Eponine: Would travel everywhere at breakneck speed if she could, is condemned to walk at the moment.

Pinkie: IS FUELED BY SPEED AND SUGAR.
