DE: Just drink the glass already

A simple question today, is your pup basically optimistic or pessimistic?

Amascut is very pessimistic, but she is optimistic that what she does is right and that eventually she'll succeed.

Fairy Fixit says there is a time and a place and a purpose for both. Both are useful mindsets, if applied to the right situations. I don't know if she is more of one than the other though.

Going from easiest to hardest, I guess...

Glorfindel: Optimist. Eternal golden 'hey I'll just take care of that balrog for you' optimist.

Sam: Optimist, though that's getting difficult in current circumstances.

Katya: Pessimist - she plans for the worst on a routine basis.

Bones: Pessimist, but he does make an effort to sound optimistic to his patients. Sometimes. If they need it. Kirk and Spock just get bitched at, they can take it.

William: Optimist, but that can be terribly difficult some days.

Ace: .................... optimist. Underneath all of the bs, she really is an optimist.

Jemma: ......... Generally an optimist. But she gets dragged down easily.

Clara: Optimist, poor child. She should not be with Eleven around, things go badly.

Oswin: ... Ideologically an optimist, functionally a pessimist, if that makes sense?

Enjolras: Optimist. Pragmatic, but seriously, he has a canonical thousand-word speech which is basically OPTIMISM OPTIMISM IDEOLOGICAL OPTIMISM IN THE FACE OF CERTAIN DEATH.

Thor: Optimist! Less of a soaring idealist about it than Enjolras, but significantly more prone to "enh, I'm sure this'll go fine!!!" on the planning level. (Or the... failing-to-plan level.)

Cosette: Definitely an optimist. Sunny and cheery about it, too.

Trowa: Extremely cynical. Less outright pessimistic than 'plan for the worst, and then plan for worse than that, just in case, so that maybe you can fix it,' but if I had to pick one... pessimist.

River: Hmm. Optimist, but not by a whole lot.

Regan: Ditto, although very differently.

Clare: I'm not sure this scale even applies, because what Clare really is is someone who throws herself into things regardless of whether she thinks they'll end well or not. Optimism, pessimism? WHO CARES, STUBBORNNESS. I guess that maybe ends up slightly on the side of optimism?

"Let others rise to take our place until the Earth is free" encapsulates Enjolras and his optimism perfectly, I think.

Yeah! That from the musical and the book's "The nineteenth century will be great, but the twentieth century will be happy" both work extremely well as encapsulations. (Good job on the rhetorical soundbites, Enjolras.)

Joshua wants to be an optimist, but a lot of his life so far has shown him that things go to shit easily, so he's really cautious.

Helena is extremely pessimistic. Being a statue for over a century does that.

Mark is a pessimist that starts changing his tune. From: and when I capture it on film, will it mean that it's the end and I'm alone? to: And when you're dyin' in America at the end of the millenium, you're not alone.

Fantine used to be one of the world's biggest optimists, but then France shat on her.

Valentine and Peter are somewhat in the middle. Val more on the pessimistic side.

Knox is a cynic, but optimistic.

Kirk is always optimistic.

Howard is less of an optimist than he used to be.

Cy is a total optimist.

Charlie doesn't entirely fit either category. He'd insist on being called a realist, and leaving it at that. But he chose a successor, so he must have been optimist in some way.

And Gibbs is a pirate, which means he's an optimist about finding booty and a pessimist about living to spend it.

Will has always been a pessimistic except when it comes to Robin then he's an optimist. He has a hopefulness to him but its been worn down a lot by life so complicated.

Charles is a huge optimist though canon is going to make him less of one until he figures out how to be one again. Oh Marvel, I do hate you sometimes.

William is a pessimist, he'd like to be an optimist but life has hit him too hard too often.

Ivan is a pessimist, he's always suspicious when things are going right because he's waiting for what will go wrong.

Moist is an optimist, mainly because he believes he can find a way to get himself out of any complication.

Jane is currently more of a pessimist in terms of her own life but in her writing, she's more of an optimist as she wants to hope for the best. Its just that life has shown her the limits of what's possible.

Sameth is a pessimist, he's used to many things not going right.

Demeter is an optimist because life will come back.

Tumnus is a pessimist, he's more hopeful now but he doesn't always expect the good result.

The Pirate King is an optimist, he will make what he wants happen.

Hm. I'm not sure where to put Ibani on the Optimist/Pessimist scale.

On the one hand, she's had a LOT of exposure to the ugly side of people and she knows that her plans to reform the Sith will most likely end in failure and her horrible and painful death. (Especially since Quinlan Voss told her that the Sith Empire was thousands of years ago.)

On the other hand, she believes she has to try anyway. Otherwise what was the point of her surviving all these years when so many people didn't? If she doesn't try to make things better all the death, all the suffering and the pain would be for nothing.

Optimist, of the "yes, I expect we will be at this forever, but that is only more reason to keep shoveling" variety.

Jay is optimistic despite everything. He hopes for the best, even if he's tends to expect the worst.

Olivier is definitely an optimist. He envisions a bright and beautiful world and is willing to work hard to make it so.

David believes in a better world but thinks very darkly of his place in it. He's very willing to take the worst life throws at them to protect the people he cares about.

Minx is a bright soul who wants to see the best in people.

I play two optimists, two fatalists and a pessimist.

You be the judge as to who's who!
