"They can't stand sunlight," Father Harman says, "but that might be a legitimate human illness. They don't show up in mirrors; that is the one thing which unmistakeably sets them apart."

"Hm." He thinks about it. "Wouldn't they stay away from mirrors as much as possible?"

[witchfinder_general]

"That is why we need portable mirrors, or similar equipment."

[athelstanthescribe]

"Those are very expensive."

The closest he's ever held to a mirror is a polished piece of metal.

[witchfinder_general]

"In your time, yes," Father Harman says. "But you might use any polished bit of metal; their reflection will not show up."

[athelstanthescribe]

"A reflection is a reflection", he says with a nod. "At Lindisfarne, we use metal, or sometimes water, if we have need to."

[witchfinder_general]

"An opportunity to look at a monster that might attack on a surface of still water is rather rare," Father Harman says. "So, a polished bit of metal would have worked best for my predecessors in your time. The shape doesn't matter, as one doesn't need an accurate reflection - if there is a reflection, it's human and mortal."

"Is it known how these demons came to walk the earth?"

[witchfinder_general]

"No," Father Harman says. "Not that we are aware of. There might be archives, but people who become aware of their existence mostly end up fighting them, rather than researching their history."

[athelstanthescribe]

"Surely there are those not suited to fighting, who wish to help the war another way."

[witchfinder_general]

"Not many people know about it," Father Harman says.

[athelstanthescribe]

"...how can that be?"

[witchfinder_general]

"The vampires try to remain secret," Father Harman says, "and we do not mind that -- we do not wish for people to panic, and suspect the innocent. Vampires are very, very rare."

[athelstanthescribe]

"But must still be destroyed", he surmises, "as hellspawn."

[witchfinder_general]

"Absolutely."

[athelstanthescribe]

"With fire?"

[witchfinder_general]

"Sunlight, artificial sunlight, or a stake through the heart, for which we have an artificial, modern solution as well," Father Harman says.

[athelstanthescribe]

"But why would you need modern solutions, if the old still work?"

[witchfinder_general]

"Less messy and much easier to apply," Father Harman says.

[athelstanthescribe]

Athelstan shakes his head slightly. "There must always be a place for tradition."

[witchfinder_general]

"Not if it means we have to be within arm's length of a vampire when it violently bursts into flame," Father Harman says.

[athelstanthescribe]

"Bows and arrows", he says after a moment's thought, "I believe are very effective."

[witchfinder_general]

"Exactly," Father Harman says. "We are using something that is a handier, logical successor to this."

[athelstanthescribe]

"Which is...?"

[witchfinder_general]

"Something called a gun, which shoots bits of metal, usually, thrown forwards by an explosion," Father Harman says. "We have been using really hard wood with a metal bottom first, but then found that carbon alone, the active ingredient in wood, will work just as well and is easier to make. And less likely to be damaged by the explosion that shoots it from the gun."
