Gene - a) has an innate sense of decency and desire to stop bad people hurting folk who don't deserve it, and b) it's a really cool job, where he gets to drive fast, brandish a gun, and shout at people.

(The real reason being, of course, that he's in a world he created after being shot, and now affords other coppers the opportunity to come to terms with their own demise because he's so enraged at his own fate. but He doesn't know that most of the time.)

Javert - because he was born in a jail with a criminal mother and convict father, and quickly decided that he would always be ostracized for it (probably rightly, by and large) and so only had to options - to attack society, or to defend it. Being who he is, he chose the latter.

Valjean - doesn't work, anymore. Everything he does is for Cosette. He doesn't have a life without her.

Because if she doesn't, it's not going to get any better.

Really, that's mostly what it boils down to. I mean, her world might get better, there's other people in it doing things, after all, but... the only way to be sure someone's trying to make it better is to do it herself, and hope other people do the same.

The rest of her motivation is 'because my father, for all that I love him and for all that he was a brilliant scientist, was an idiot in many regards, and I do not want to be like him'.

Mike and Raph do what they do because that's what they were trained for.

Splinter does what he does, because of vengeance...and love. Vengeance and love.

Aang does what he does because of honor and duty...also love.

Bumi does what he does for pretty much the same reason.

Ida does what she does because of programming.

The Loompas do what they do because it's all they know how.

Raven does what he does because he loves people.

Galadan does his thing out of arrogance, pride, and the fact that he has the power and someone will step in if it isn't him. He'd rather it was him. (And the other stuff he does is so River and Mary and Gabriel will approve.)

Wonder Woman does what she does out of love.

Michael does what she does out of love, loss, and a smidge of pride.

Dean does his thing because he honestly doesn't know how to choose to do anything else. His only reward for trying is alcoholism.

Sam Tyler does a lot of shit because he wants to know why.

Nynaeve does her thing because healing what can be healed and saving those that can be saved isn't always enough. And she's very damn determined.

Juliet: Because she's not about to let the world fall apart on her watch.

Andrea: To make it so as many kids as possible don't have to have her childhood.
