"She has a fierce spirit and has been hurt deeply. Some could see her as cruel or cold but she is trying to be strong for their sake." He ducks his head. "And she is in great pain. She needs someone she can lean on."

He shakes his head. "I think she doesn't want the others to see. Her pain, her weakness."

"If she must lead them, you might be right. She needs their trust in her strength."

"What you say is true but I have trust. In her and her strength. Even when she does not."

"And for that alone, you must be a blessing to her. A woman - or indeed a man - in her position needs someone with trust in them very much."

"I hope I can be of help to her." He lowers his eyes again.

"In what ways do you serve her?"

"I am her eyes in the human kingdom, her wings when she need news or messages carried." He blushes a little. "Her comfort when the night is cold and dark."

Cadfael looks at him with knowing eyes, and no condemnation at all. "Then I'm sure you're of great help to her, in many ways."

"I hope so. I don't... I'm still learning how this shape works."

"Can I be of any help to you?"

He shakes his head. "I think I just have to learn but thank you."
