DE: One foot at a time

Let's take a look at your pup's footwear. What are their criteria for shoes? Is it cost? Comfort? Dare I say fashion? Something else altogether? Do they have one pair footwear they cherish above all others? Are they limited in their selections in some manner and would happily chosen another option is given the chance?

Ichabod and Michael both favour sturdy boots. I'll have to think about the others.

Gordon's approach to footwear is pretty utilitarian, but we're talking about somebody who would resolve his clothing issues by buying seven of the same shirt and pants and only customizing his lab coat if he could get away with it. There's not a lot of shoe options in the post-Combine world, so he does what he can with what he's got.

Shephard prefers reinforced boots with waterproofing and grippy, solid soles most of the time. His alternative option is something more like a moccasin, made from either bullsquid leather or the remaining pieces of the hide of the sea serpent that Kreyu once gave him, because boots are not really the best for climbing up to a tree stand for hunting. He may have a few more options in the shoe department than Gordon, because while Gordon relies on either scavenged shoes or the work of shoemakers in one of the survivor communities, Shephard is Kanaya Maryam's second lusus and I'd have to ask Jackie whether Kanaya's fashion skills extend to footwear as well as clothes.

Ellen prefers protective shoes that last a long time and that she can personally repair. However, she owns more suits of armor than she does changes of regular clothing, and both her power armor and her Chinese stealth suit come with built-in footwear, so unless for some reason she's wearing plain combat armor or her Vault suit or Brotherhood green fatigues, she's not even thinking about her footwear. When she visited Steve Rogers' New York City, they walked past a Foot Locker in Times Square at one point. I don't think she was able to wrap her mind around all of the options in the window. (The line of guys waiting outside for the newest model of sneaker to come out was a little more comprehensible. Of course you wait in line for hours for a fresh supply of a new, valuable resource.)

Varric appreciates craftsmanship in his footwear and has several changes of shoe for showing off on social occasions. When Hawke is involved, however, he gets out the boots made from bronto hide that're guaranteed to last under anything short of a really fire-oriented mage's full-bore wrath.

Medic prefers tightly sealed waterproof rubber boots on the job, and only owns about two other pairs of shoes besides- the brown ones and the black ones. But they are damn fine pairs of shoes, because if you are going to spend money on a clothing item, it should be an investment.

Santo has several different varieties of shoe depending on whether he expects to be running down bad guys today, showing off in front of the press, or in the wrestling ring. He doesn't give much thought to footwear otherwise; he consults a tailor for his regular clothes and accepts his recommendations.

Edward Kenway is mostly happy to find boots that fit him, but tends to go over the prisoners and the dead whenever he takes a ship and take any items of their clothing that are swanker than what he's currently got, including their shoes. (There was at least one incident in pirating history of Benjamin Hornigold assaulting a ship and taking everybody's hats before setting them free; I see no reason why Kenway wouldn't do much the same.) Men's shoes of the early 1700s had squared toes and moderately high heels that were only starting to come down to a comfortable size/height by Edward's day, so.

Stacker Pentecost has the dress-uniform black boots, the men's dress shoes that go with that blue suit he wears when not in uniform, a set of trainers for physical workouts, and a pair of ludicrously overdone maroon leather shoes with all kinds of embellishments that were a 'complimentary business gift' from Hannibal Chau after they first sealed the deal to let Chau have access to kaiju parts. Stacker will not admit to ANYONE that the shoes from Chau are actually kind of impressive and that he'd wear them more often if he could get away with it, because he has an image to present and he cannot let that falter.

Fairy Fixit is definitely fashion conscious; I do not know what the purpose of those pants she wears would be otherwise. Then again, most fairies wear short skirts. But anyway, shoes. Knee high boots. It doesn't look like they are high heels, but even so, she spends most of her time up in the air so I am guessing traction isn't that important.

Huh, now I know why I can't think of alternate costumes for her. Her work clothes, despite being work clothes, are Zanaris Fairy high fashion. WTF.

Amascut is more utilitarian, but the utility is all in the look she is trying to achieve. That said, I think she likes sandals.

Sunshine goes for comfort and low cost, if at all possible. But with all the changes to her lifestyle, she does have a sturdy pair of running shoes along with all of her comfy footwear. Needless to say, those running shoes have seen better days.

Yrael will go out of his way to keep from wearing shoes. If he does have to, however, he generally fits the shoe to the situation, while assuring comfort.

Zelgadiss has one pair of traveling boots that have seen him safe through many dangers. He'll only buy a new pair when these fall apart.

Sam: Is usually in her uniform boots (and she's so terribly glad she's finally worn them to the point they've stopped pinching so badly), but she has a couple of dress shoes, and a pair of slippers. Those are all used sparingly, both because of limited reason to wear them and it will be hard to repair them if they broke or wore through. Offering to take her shoe shopping (or any shopping!) later in the war would make a very giddy Sam.

Glorfindel: Has the necessary boots and slippers, and they're all wonderfully comfortable... but he has absolutely no problem whatsoever running around barefoot.

Jemma: Tends towards dressy-ish flats and loafers that won't murder her feet if she stands in them all day. Of course, she eyes the shoes people like Romanoff can wear, but she knows her limits.

Blakeney: Has the shoes that go with his uniform. They're frankly horrid, but if you stuff rags into them they don't wobble and chafe nearly as much. The shoes he started his time in the Nave with fit a bit better, but he grew out of those.

Katya: Adores boots. Sparkly boots! Well, any boots. She tends to lose her footwear when she shifts - she learned how to keep her clothing easily enough (she had high motivation, one of their patrol's frequent partners was an incubus, and he had no problem whatsoever commenting on her clothing or lack thereof, and that's embarrassing to a teenager), but footwear she still loses in the Gloom somewhere from time to time. Just more excuse to go buy more shoes.

Clara: Enjoys fashion on a teacher's salary (plus whatever she can find on the TARDIS). All of her shoes must be something she can run in, however. She's found running is becoming a surprising frequent activity for her.

Oswin: Doesn't have a whole lot of preference - she's equally fond of a lot of shoes, and has enough balance and skill to deal with high heels if she wants. (Which is less often than when she was on the ship, after all, heels aren't good for mucking around in cars.)

Bones: Has his starfleet-issue boots. ..... Annnd those? Probably also some hiking boots. ... Oh, and the dress shoes that go with the dress uniform, yup.

Blakeney: Has classy shoes. Actually, it's just important that the soles be leather, otherwise it acts as an insulator and blocks the current and then life gets very, very difficult for a hunted Merlinian.

Blakeney's a busier fellow than I thought, apparently.

BTW, if you ever wanna mess with Blakeney in less massively destructive ways, both Shephard and Edward Kenway have ships available, and I can happily screw with either one's life on a moment's notice.

... I can see this boy taking his disbelief of someone's story a bit too far and failing to recognize that he is a) tiny and b) mostly weaponless when in the bar and c) missing an arm and still learning to compensate for it - he is terribly portable, actually.

:D Wanna kidnap a midshipman? Warning, small itty bitty midshipmen are unexpectedly vicious once he gets his hands on a weapon.

Gladly! Did you want the past, with pirates and flintlocks and assassins, or the future, with Americans and monsters and a ship that can talk? I know he's interacted with Shephard before and didn't much believe most of his stories, because really, who trusts Americans...

[personal profile] souffle_girlek 2014-10-09 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I think probably the future would go better - Blakeney would get it into his head that he's supposed to be some sort of one-officer pirate-attacking crew and that'd get ugly fast.

Yeeeah, the best way that could turn out would involve Adewale, the Trinidadian quartermaster who is about the size of a refrigerator, sitting on his head until they could get to a very small island and leave the kid there. And that's if everyone involved was feeling generous that day. The future it is!

I once read a terrible book by the name of Midshipwizard Halcyon Blithe. Think Napoleonic Wars with dragon-ships. Biggest Marty-Stu I'd ever seen published.

He was half-demon and his eyes changed color with his mood.

Heeeeeeeeey, there have been good Napoleonic-Wars-with-dragons books! Naomi Novik did a wonderful series.

I can't even touch the eye-color-changing.

No no no, Naomi Novik's books are delightful! The Temeraire series is great. This one I was talking about, though... is... I couldn't finish it out of disgust.

Yeaaaaah I'm totally having that reaction with this movie my dad is watching, Dragonfyre. It's not even hilariously bad, it's just actually awful.

Did somebody say shoes? Pam loves shoes, for which Eric indulgently gives her an allowance. Fashionable, expensive, designer shoes. All manner of pumps, stilettos, and high-heeled boots. Hey, she has to have something to go with all of her fashionable, expensive, designer outfits.

Clementine: Loves heels. Big, stacked, strippery heels, and though she'd like to think her taste is so uber-expensive it really isn't.

Dixie: Heels belong on stage, that's her biggest opinion about shoes.

Pinkie: Thinks they ought to totally sparkle.A lot. A Lot lot.

Juliet: Likes fashion in general more than shoes. Sensible flats at work. You don't want to trip over yourself while running after a perp.

Eponine: Will frankly take any shoes she can get get hands on. She DOES like those pretty high buttoned shoes the more fancy women of town wear. though.
