So it's either New Years Eve or New Years, depending on where you are relative to the international date line. What does your character think of the day? Is it just another day or is it a bookmark of a new chapter? Do they make resolutions or goals for the coming year? Do they care about the kiss?

Eric likes New Year's. Lots of drunk and disillusioned people out and about at night.
What's not to like?
As for himself, the first century's worth of New Year's were exciting. After that it gets sort of trivial.
Elrond likes to mark the passing of the seasons. As an elf, he'd probably be more inclined to celebrate the passing of the great years, but if others are celebrating, he'll be happy to join in.
