substitute de 2
Hi, all. I'm back at work after a nice quiet New Year and a New Year's Day spent mostly grocery shopping, so without further ado, here's today's DE inspired by the first thing to come up on my playlist this morning.
In Pacific Rim canon, when two characters hook up to the machines necessary to run the Jaeger suits for fighting giant monsters, they link minds and memories for the duration of their time in the suits. This usually results in a handful of particularly prominent or noteworthy memories coming to the fore (since it's easier to film that way, but hush, the fourth wall is feeling fragile right now). If your character had to Drift with somebody for some reason, what would be a couple of the most important or noteworthy things lurking in their mind that the other person would perceive first?

The strongest memory for Pam is how she was turned into a vampire. And then probably the amazing vampire sex with Eric before they stopped having sex. And then just a general permeating feeling of how much she loves him because he is all she has.

Becoming a Maker would be Eric's and behind that the memory of sun on his back and the surf lapping at his feet, playing on the beach as a child.
(and being turned by Godric, but he'd rather not talk about that)

Carol would drift with Jessica Drew, which would be interesting, because in current canon, Jess actually remembers more about Carol than Carol does. Carol would remember re-meeting her friends for the "first" time, but what would be more interesting would be seeing Jess's memories from their earlier friendship or Jess's experience of Carol sacrificing herself.
Mary would probably drift with Anna Smtih, her maid. At her current place in canon, Mary's strong memories would probably be of the happy times leading up to Matthew's proposal when she thought she could maybe have nice things, and the pain of being rejected shortly thereafter.

I do know some of the memories Carol would get would be Jess catching Carol as she fell from the Golden Gate, Carol finding Jess in Madripor and Jess being so scared that Carol was a skrull or was there to take Jess into custody, Carol holding or hugging Jess and making her feel safe. There'd be blowing up of HYDRA bases too of course.

Shephard: Flooding and being dragged out of it by a man in soldier's uniform, a whole lot of images of forests and the things that live in them, one big smeary blur of Parris Island and survival training and Quantico (the Scout Sniper school), falling out of the sky, fending off monsters with a pipe wrench, a single flash of the brightest white light imaginable, running down a Gene Worm's throat with a bonus hit of the worst smell in the world, stabbing a wild pig twice his size as it tries to gore him... there's a couple of others, like the bullet ant thing, but those tend to stand out. I honestly don't know who he'd Drift with. I feel a bit sorry for them.
Ellen: Fluorescent lights and bluegrey metal and a lot of snotty little kids being generally unpleasant. Cheerful robots with lots of arms. Getting a reassuring weight clamped on one forearm. An old man talking quietly and going over texts on a screen with her at great length. Being shaken awake and into utter fear, and then light and space and everything is wrong. People in spikes and huge green creatures with guns and a basement full of skulls and worse. Little green men and figures in power armor, and a computer screen reading ** WARNING: This will commit ALL WARHEADS to target and lock this station! **. And a small army of gleaming robots that resemble something out of Lost In Space. Once again, I honestly don't know who she'd Drift with, and I really do feel sorry for them and the things they'd see.
Haven't really got my other pups lined up for this yet. Stacker, however, has canonically indicated that he's capable of keeping his memories and emotions completely out of the Drift, so we've got that.

...His big sister Ecto really opened up the throttle and was tearing down the runway as he whooped from his shotgun seat, once they peeled out of the drift-turn in the snow. A day of driving around Floyd Bennett field and playing fetch with Francis...
...waking up Christmas morning to his own bed in the firehouse, with blue sheets and a real mattress and not the cot they'd set up last night for him to sleep on. There were breakfast smells coming from the kitchen and no gibbering Slimer in sight...
...Sitting up on the rooftop with Ray, talking quietly about things and how stuff worked. It was just cold enough to warrant bringing up a thermos of Ovaltine up there with them...
...waking up in the closet of his biological parents' Wonderburg Earth Defense League headquarters to the sound of his own voice, no make that his own body-double being extremely cheerful that he was back was not even in the running for the top ten weirdest moments of his life. There was something wrong with this, but it long since ceased to matter as Toby came in to dissolve the double and of all things explain what had happened.
"Do you really want to live at PS238 instead of here?" Toby had asked incredulously, plainly confused.
"In a storage room?"
"Mom and Dad kept forgetting to find a place to put the other you, and this was the best I could find."
"At least you kept a double around so no one knew I was gone."
"Yeaaah... about him...." Toby did his level best to try and give it to the brother he'd been cloned from gently about what the doppelganger had done. With the fire extinguisher and the hamster. As if that mattered.
"Great. I'm going back to school."
"You're sure you want to leave?"
"Did anyone I'm related to remember my name or that I exist this morning?" Tyler asked, even though he knew the answer. It'd been the same one for years now. It hurt, and ached a little inside because he missed Ray and Ecto and everyone at the Firehouse so much now.
"I did!" Toby replied brightly.
"Anyone who isn't my clone?"
"Uhh..."
"See you at school."

...Graduated and now an emancipated minor, there was a familiar uneasy ball in Tyler's stomach as he grabbed the last of his completely debugged bags and made for the door. His biological parents already had the son they always wanted, and Toby... well. He'd done the best for Toby that he could. They just didn't need him really, and he'd come to terms with his parents being the sort of people who were neglectful at the best of times. He had to start running now. It was start running now or never, and the car in his new name and identity was in the parking garage. Someone was there already and he froze in the shadows a moment because no one was supposed to be there at all. There was a sheepish clearing of the throat before he caught the familiar emblem stitched onto the man's sleeve.
"Hey Tyler....oh man you've grown up." Were all the words Ray got out before he got tackle-hugged by the crying 16 year old young man. They had a lot of catching up to do.

Fairy Fixit: A command... well, more of a dying wish from someone she loved but didn't really know. "... Forget me."

Charles would drift with Erik, I actually have fic work in progress about that. His memories would be the first time he was inside someone else's mind, meeting Raven, when he first realized what genetics could do, meeting Erik, getting his dissertation.
Quentin would probably drift with Raj. His memories would be of his family from before his fosterage, being shot, meeting and losing Katie, rescuing Toby, meeting the Luidaeg.
Sameth would drift with Nick or maybe Ellimere and his memories would be suffused with the Charter, shining through everything and making things, so many creations and family.
Jane would drift with her sister, Cassandra and there would be thoughts of writing, Tom, dancing, lots of small moments.
William, I don't know who he would drift with, maybe his brother though someone from Milliways would probably work better. His memories would be Mark being sick, times during the War, the freedom of riding, his father dying, Mark going to school.
Ivan would drift with Miles, I wonder if anyone's written that, they must have. His memories would be many years of lighting his father's funeral altar on his birthday, almost dying, meeting his wife and many moments of Miles and Gregor.
Moist is tricky, I can't imagine him drifting with anyone. In terms of memories, the fear of the closing shutters, helping train the dogs, running away, the first time a job went right and went wrong.
Tumnus would probably drift with Lucy and he would think of his father reading to him, his capture, meeting Lucy, Aslan's return.
Demeter would drift with her daughter, they would be so dangerous. Most of the memories would be of her daughter growing up, leaving and coming back mixed in with other family ones.
I've sort of expanded my answer but I love Pacific Rim and the idea of Drifting.

As for her clearest memories while drifting... Any number of snippets of her childhood in Saint Lucia; acceptance to Starfleet Academy and the four years of training that followed; the Enterprise's narrow escape from a star's gravitational well; the giddy, helpless missing-pieces feeling of a mind running on no REM sleep; clickclickclick clickclickclick clickclick click clickclick from the surrounding darkness, the glare of the laboratory light, the separate but related sensations of a restraining metal arm and a blade with a jagged edge; the moments when everyone at Milliways thought the local world was ending as gravity ebbed away; being lifted off her feet and twirled around by Gene on the day he reappeared; the Enterprise responding to her so readily it amazes her, never mind everything rational and educated in her brain telling her it's nothing to react over. Despite or more likely because of her training, she's a little awestruck. White sand, deep water, Castries streets and stars as far as the eye can see.

A laboratory. A cobalt blue light emanating from some sort of device. A dark chamber deep underground, with perfectly smooth, cylindrical walls. The hum of massive machinery in the distance. A library. A journal with pencil sketches. A man in suspenders with shoulder-length, shaggy brown hair, and a wry grin. A drink of water, cool and sweet. A kiss.

Minx - would total drift with Racer X in a Jaeger called the Shooting Star. Her memories would centre around her resent injuries and being shot. It might be hard to get past the panic that caused her.
David - Would never drift with anyone after the war. He has too much pain and darkness inside himself to risk sharing that with anyone else. He lost people he loved, was betrayed during the war and did terrible things afterwards. He would never want anyone to have to experience that.
Olivier - His memories would be kinder - memories of Antioch, of his mother and of warmer places than England. Also, Ermina.
Diaval Drifting might be quite difficult for Diaval. He has problems with the big thoughts that go with being human shaped as it is without having to share other people's big thoughts.
