DE: There are many like it but this one is mine

Since we touched on childhoods yesterday, let's continue. Did your character have a favorite toy or possession as a child? Do they still have it or even remember it? Has it evolved into an interest in their present lives?

How about yourself?

Gordon had a small set of marbles that his father brought back from one of his trans-Pacific flights; he was very, very fond of those, and brought them with him well into adulthood, although he eventually lost them when he attended Innsbruck. He did not tell anyone about this because he did not want to hear the puns, thank you.

Ellen was very, very attached to the issue of Grognak the Barbarian that her friend Amata gave her for her tenth birthday. Also to the BB gun her father gave her later that same day. Both were left behind in Vault 101, alas; what happened to them after that she does not know.

I am not sure about the others. Me, I have a few Morgan silver dollars my father gave me when I was in third or fourth grade; they're from the late 1800s and both of us were big coin collectors at the time. I don't collect any more, but they were gifts from my dad, so you'd damn well better bet I keep them. As far as toys and other possessions go I had an unfortunate tendency to break things, but there's a Breyer model horse or two among the apartment decorations that I've had for a long, long time now.

Twilight had a doll named "Smarty Pants" when she was a filly, which was roughly the ponyverse equivalent of a Cabbage Patch Kids doll. Due to an... incident a couple of years ago, it now belongs to Apple Jack's brother Big Macintosh.

Alyx has a necklace her mother made when she was a baby. That and the photo of the Vance family are the only things she has from before the Black Mesa Incident. She never takes off the necklace, even to bathe.

I have a very random headcanon that when Asami was four or five, she was sick with the flu, and to cheer her up her father constructed little wind-up toys for her. Things like a koi that moved around and flapped its tail, and an otter penguin that could shuffle from one side to the other, and obviously a miniature Satomobile. But she came under the mistaken impression that wind-up toys were what you gave to someone when they were sick, like flowers, so later on when a maid in their house became sick, she took apart the toys apart and made a new one of a turtle duck to give to her.

... and sometime around then was when her father started equating "thing she's allowed to be around" with "things she can probably safely take apart." So sometimes her "toys" were things like gramophones or typewriters. Er.

Also I kind of just want these Avatar nesting dolls to exist in the Avatarverse, somehow.

Katara didn't have a lot of time to be a child, and didn't have any toys from childhood that she'd still kept by the time she was 14. At the moment, I'm mostly imagining that she and Sokka enjoyed playing ajagaq (note – link goes to a video).

Will generally doesn't get too attached to physical objects, and when he was a child his father couldn't really afford that much in terms of toys. Most of what he had were things like puzzles or Legos – anything with minimal light/sound stimulation, or that didn't really lend to the same extent to imaginative play, as that was kind of redundant or potentially overstimulating for him. Probably what he most looked forward to getting when they could manage it was a bike, as that allowed him more independence, which he tended to need even pretty early on in order to take on responsibilities his father wasn't dealing with.

Dejah keeps a mechanical folding puzzle, about three inches on a side, on her workbench. Her grandmother gave to her when she was very young, before her mother died. It's a series of interlocking leaves, cogs and gears made of a titanium alloy, and it has that gold peacock hint of color to it. It looks like a cross between an orrery and one of those origami paper things that continuously folds into itself, seemingly in defiance of the laws of physics. When it's assembled, it flows from form to form with a series of quiet clicks. And it's only able to be disassembled in one particular configuration, and in that configuration, removing one pin can make it fall completely apart.

Dejah has assembled and reassembled that Enigma Box hundreds, perhaps thousands of times. She fiddles with it when she's thinking, turning it into itself again and again. It is one of her most prized possessions.

Clementine had one of those Barbie hairdressing kits that she wore down to the roots as a child.

Dixie had a rag doll. Still does - it's hidden at the bottom of the drunk.

Juliet's toys are all with her mom in Florida - she had a walkee-talkee she used a lot.

Eponine had a doll once, too, but it got left behind when the inn was taken.

Pinkie had a rock. A very fine rock!
