Jobs for the Bound

Various suggestions were made to solve the problem of the poor insolvent Bound who need some cash to pay their tabs.

Moiraine wrote a letter of authorisation to her man of business and placed it on the Bar which absorbed it, presumably passed it on and her tab has been taken care of ever since. This would work for those with funds at home.

Prince Arithon suggested that on a trip home he set up a trust fund for the Bound that will pay their basic needs - but not the Booze tabs.

Dionysus suggested something along the same lines only by divine intervention, and again only bed and board are covered. The booze tab would have to be met by some means of their own.

Andrew suggested that on a trip home - just as it says in the Hitchhiker books - he open 'one dollar' accounts for people that, by the end of the universe, will have amassed enough in compound interest to pay the biggest of tabs.

As far as actual jobs are concerned, the following suggestions were made:

A barber's shop [Joe Manco] expanded via comments with Fleur and Gil to a beauty salon complete with massage parlour.

wadewilsonsdead suggested turning tricks for drinks, which would be OK for the magicians ;)

How about market gardening - grow your own vegetables? Or cut flowers for the tables?

Fleur suggested a boutique as well as a beauty spa.

Then there's that fabulous idea about a Milliways Library - surely they would need some shelf stackers and book sorters?

Actually the possibilities are endless. What do the mods think?

My mind immediately went to the other type of tricks. YAY for in-bar prostitution!!! Bartleby volunteers to be a pimp.

David thusly volunteers to be a slut. Might as well get paid for something he does anyway.

All wages go to the Bound of the bar, since he don't need 'em.

Also, there's the Milliversity. I don't know if teachers would get paid or not, but they could be.

Nick would love to work to organize the Milliversity. He was the head of his department at the University of Chicago. Not that he needs the money. He'd donate whatever funds toward paying for people's tabs.

Yay!

Lord Peter, while not Bound, would be happy to head the Library. Or even foot it. Or elbow it, perhaps...

Jake'd love to help out with that.

I'm not sure I know his canon...?

Peter would be happy of the help though, I'm sure.

Jake Chambers is from the Dark Tower canon. As are Roland of Gilead and Ted Brautigan.

Oh, that Jake! Righteo then, I know him. Ted -- is Ted the junkie, or is Ted from after my reading? I've only read up through Wizard and Glass.

[identity profile] pjpettigrew.livejournal.com 2004-12-09 12:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Ted's a Breaker. You might have read about him in "Low Men in Yellow Coats" in the book Hearts in Atlantis--he doesn't show up till after Wizard and Glass in the Dark Tower series.

Eddie Dean is the former junkie. His brother Henry never gets to the "former" state. (We have an Eddie, but he hasn't been around for some time.)

Martouf will work wherever he is needed - for the most part.
