DE: What's my name again?

Seems like we have enough new blood for this to be relevant again...

What does your character's journal name mean? Is there a story behind it or is it pretty straight forward? And for those of us who've answered this too many times, what are some other names you almost ended up using or have thought of since?

A current roster, though the pattern tends to be fairly steady...

Alex Knox - gotham_knocking - He's named Knox (knocks) and he's from Gotham! See, it's a play on words.

CharlieQuestion - 52_dropoff - He died during DC Comics' 52 series, so instead of being a "52 pick-up" he is a dropoff. See, it's another play on words.

(I think I am so clever.)

Joshamee Gibbs - pirate_gibbs (yes, he's still on my roster but never seems to play) - Aspen was already playing Captain Jack Sparrow when I apped Gibbs, and since Jack was (and is) pirate_jack, I followed suit (as Gibbs does).

Cyborg - says_the_booyah - When Cyborg leaves the Teen Titans for a time, Starfire asks "who will yell the booyah?" I got the quote wrong, but the principle is sound. Cyborg says "booyah" often in the cartoon. He's even saying it in the comics.

Jim Kirk - works_in_space - A similar principle. The exact line from Star Trek IV is "I told you, I'm from Iowa. I only work in outer space." So I don't have it exactly right, but close enough.

Swamp Thing - alec_swamp - His name is Alec. He's a swamp thing.

I've always liked Knox's journal name, but I never got it. And now I feel dumb for having missed it all these years. XD
2goodarms: Curtis silhouetted in front of the engine (control the world)

[personal profile] 2goodarms 2015-07-24 01:52 pm (UTC)(link)
...you know, I'm not sure if I've done this meme for Curtis yet!

For spoilery reasons, Curtis considers it a mark of honor to lose a limb. At one point, when they're about halfway up the train (right after Edgar's death), he and Gilliam discuss where to go from there. Gilliam points out that even if Curtis thinks Gilliam should lead, everybody else sees Curtis as their leader.

To which Curtis says, "How can I lead if I have two good arms?"

Later, that same "two good arms" turn of phrase is how he receives confirmation that Wilford and Gilliam were working together the whole time. So, yeah! There's a lot bundled up in that username.

[personal profile] harryhotspur 2015-07-24 01:53 pm (UTC)(link)
....yeah this one's not very creative.

Viola's ([personal profile] livinginmyglass) is also slightly lazy, it's just a line from her play: "I my brother know/ Yet living in my glass; even such and so/In favor was my brother." So I figured it worked nicely as a shout to the various layers of what she's up to-- dressed as a boy, semi-subconsciously dressed as/mourning her brother. I only belatedly realized it probably sounds like she just drinks a lot but... oops.

Arabella's ([personal profile] astrangebell) is slightly less lazy! (Also I'm going to properly put her in the bar soon, I swear...) Her married name is Strange, she is sometimes called Bell, and various magical events she gets caught up in are associated with and heralded by eerie, unseen bells tolling. Strange bells, if you will.

*dusts self off after long road trip*

Gordon's journal name, [personal profile] acts_of_gord, is taken from a web site about a cranky video game store owner in British Columbia. I wasn't having much luck naming his journal and thought the Acts of Gord site had a good name, so...

Shephard's, [personal profile] hecu_marine, is a simple reference to having been a member of the Hazardous Environment Combat Unit in canon. I'd originally named his journal 'remindmeof_me' back on Livejournal because the G-man told him at the end of canon that people who survive and adapt to difficult situations (like canon) 'remind me of myself', but I was never really comfortable with that.

Ellen's is [personal profile] aaaaaaaagh_sky because after nineteen years in a Vault where the furthest you ever stood from a wall was a couple of strides and the highest the ceiling ever got was three stories up in one particular room, you'd be pretty freaked out by the big blue unreachable ceiling too.

Varric's is [personal profile] igetthatalot because of a line from the banter in Dragon Age 2:

Varric: If you've got something to say, just spit it out.
Anders: Are you sure you want to encourage me? I might be about to confess my undying love.
Varric: I get that a lot. So what's on your mind?

Santo's is [personal profile] el_enmascarado_de_plata because that's part of his wrestling moniker: Santo, the Silver-masked One. Never really did think of another possible for him.

Stacker's is [personal profile] neverbelievedintheend because every possible variation on 'canceling the apocalypse' was already taken, and because of this line of his from the prequel comic Pacific Rim: Tales From Year Zero:

“In all our eons, we’ve seen continents frozen and the sun blotted by ash- and we’re still here. A decade after K-Day and we’re still here. I’ve never believed in the end times. We are mankind. Our footprints are on the Moon. When the last trumpet sounds and the Beast rises from the Pit- we will kill it.

Edward Kenway's is [personal profile] jackdaws_master because he named his pirate ship the Jackdaw, and it seemed like a tastefully understated sort of name.

Fawkes' is [personal profile] calmhrtprevails because one of the things he will occasionally randomly say as you are wandering the Wasteland with him in tow is "In all things, the calm heart must prevail".

And Wee Mad Arthur's is just his name- [personal profile] wee_mad_arthur.

[personal profile] leeshajoy 2015-07-24 02:46 pm (UTC)(link)
[personal profile] vance_prime: In canon, the Combine refers to Alyx as "Vance Subprime." She was 'promoted' to Vance Prime after her father's death.

[personal profile] no_vampires_plz: Her name is Twilight Sparkle. Stephanie Meyer jokes are kind of inevitable.

[personal profile] g00d_d0ggie is kind of self-explanatory.

[personal profile] always_the_moon is named after a Jonathan Coulton song, which is also the source of most of her icon keywords.

[personal profile] unglitched: Vanellope was a glitch and now she's not.

[personal profile] with_his_tail_high: In the book, the Other Father refers to the cat as a "big black fellow, with his tail high."
the_lioness: (Lioness with sword)

[personal profile] the_lioness 2015-07-24 02:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Alanna (the_lioness): 'The Lioness' is her battle name. She's not there yet, but she's getting closer!

Elizabeth (try_corsets): The "try wearing a corset!" line led to her journal name. I thought about changing it to pirate_king, but I am sentimental.

Grace (headed4hell): Earl tells Grace she's headed for Hell if she doesn't change how she lives her life.

Thayet (peerless_thayet): She is known as 'Thayet the Peerless' because she's just so darn gorgeous. Thayet herself wants to groan every time she hears it.

Lana Kane (truckasaurus_mitts): Her large hands are a running joke. Archer has all sorts of insults to hurl at her about them, including this one.

Doctor Evil (doc_evil): He has an evil medical degree.

Jim Craig (snowy_river_man): He's the Man From Snowy River. I am the most original person ever. :)

Karou (a_mad_hope): Spoilery details give this username a few layers of meaning. Spoilery reasons are discussed here.
inlovewithwords: (Milliways Roster)

[personal profile] inlovewithwords 2015-07-24 02:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Evelyn Trevelyan - [personal profile] inquisitions_anchor: Double meaning alert! She's rather too young to know it yet, but her username is actually highly straight forward. One day she'll be the Inquisition's personal answer to closing the rifts, due to possessing the 'Anchor' (eldritch glowing green mark) that does the job... and more figuratively the anchor of the movement that will save Thedas from Corypheus.

The old ones:
Eriond - [personal profile] completederrand: Double meaning alert! He completed his errand in the Belgariad--delivering the Orb--and in the Mallorean, he became complete in himself and his destiny, along the way outgrowing his childhood moniker Errand. Straightforward and I cannot imagine wanting anything else.

Henry Mills - [personal profile] operates_cobra: Straightforward; in season one, his Save The World Agenda is code-named (by him) 'Operation Cobra.' Frankly, since I gave this to him, he has long since outgrown it in-canon... and I keep debating changing it to something more long-term suited. Maybe when I've played him more.

Lois Lane - [personal profile] presspasskey: Combined efforts of myself, Kati, and Steph. In season 9, Dr. Fate informs Clark that Lois is the key, after elaborates to Lois that it is regarding her relationship with "the sentient power." Anyway, key (expanded to passkey) from that, presspass because, well, duh. It's a highly Smallville-specific name, which I like, and despite some yearnings for a different username, after five years I'm not sure I can imagine seeing or typing another. It's her.

Tavi - [personal profile] student_of_impossibility: Double meaning alert (again) combined with tl;dr and history notice! I originally hated my flailing-around settling on 'gaiusoctavian,' because sigh no creativity; eventually found 'tavar_of_alera' which is okay but I was never fully content with. Discussion with someone got me digging through quotes.

Early in book six, the entire north of the continent spontaneously freezes over in minutes. It's too bizarre an occurrence to be natural--but no one person has enough furycrafting to literally turn spring instantaneously back into winter! Well, maybe Gaius Sextus had the power and knowledge, but he's dead. Octavian's barely had enough furycrafting to light a candle, and even if he suddenly inherited all that power, there's been no time or person to train him! It is impossible. Except, well, it's happening.

"Octavian had never been an able student where impossibilities were concerned."

On the other hand, he basically spends all of his life attempting the impossible, for reasons ranging from 'for fun' or 'to prove he can' to duty and a general desire not to die. So: either 'impossibility' is the one concept Tavi simply cannot learn to understand--or he's far too good at learning to overcome it. Which it is may be a matter of opinion.

And frankly it is my favorite username for any character I've played.
have_no_mercy: (Default)

[personal profile] have_no_mercy 2015-07-24 02:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Tess' UN is threefold; Oliver's nickname for her is Mercy and once upon a time she was not the ruthless bitch she is today. But all that changed so she no longer shows mercy for anyone nor is she the girl - Mercy - that Oliver used to know. On top of that she is in part based on the DC character Mercy Graves except she's NOT Mercy Graves so there's that, too.

Not to mention her licence plate in the show is NOMERCY.

Very occasionally I have thought of updating it to something that reflects more who she is as canon ends, but this has been her name for so long I just can't do it.

[personal profile] genarti 2015-07-24 03:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Oooh. I didn't know about any of those layers, on account of not really knowing canon (DC or Smallville, beyond basics), and it makes for a really cool username! I love this DE meme for finding out stuff like that.
genarti: ([misc] who walks by her wild lone)

[personal profile] genarti 2015-07-24 02:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Thor is [profile] mjolnir_retriver because [personal profile] varadia is a genius who thought of it for me! Uh, well, it's partly because the plot of Thor's first movie centers on him trying to retrieve his hammer Mjölnir, but it's mostly for the golden retriever joke. (As dog breeds go, Thor is IMO not actually much of a golden retriever, but come on, the visuals are RIGHT THERE.)

Enjolras is [personal profile] pro_patria_mortuus because it's Latin for "died for his country." It's a quote from the Roman poet Horace -- "dulce et decorum est pro patria mori," or "it is sweet and proper to die for one's country" -- which modern readers mostly know from a gutpunchingly bitter poem about WWI by Wilfred Owen, but to Enjolras and his contemporaries, it would've been an unironic statement, and something a guy of his social class learned in school. (Uh, not that no one would've been bitter or ironic about it, but the society-wide weight of it was different.) Also, Enjolras has a canonical joke on the barricade about Patria being his mistress. Morbid Latin jokes and layered references both Classical and anachronistic for a Les Mis character? Yes let's! (This is possibly the username I'm proudest of.)

Cosette has [personal profile] lark_in_flight because she has a lot of canonical lark imagery. When she was an abused kid the town called her the Lark -- "but," as the narration says, "this lark never sang"; later, Hugo tells us she's more a lark than a dove, in saying she has a certain eager wildness in her soul. There are some others too, but those are the big ones. Anyway, this is Cosette late in canon and eventually moving into post-canon, when she's growing up into herself and into adulthood, and she's happy (mostly) and married and testing out more freedom. So, in flight.

Kazul has the boring name of [personal profile] dragon_dealt because, uh. The first book she shows up in is Dealing With Dragons, and she's the dragon. Yep. I couldn't think of anything better! I could have gone with just [profile] kazul, but I used to know somebody who went by that nick online so it would've felt a bit weird to me, and also that's not less boring.

Trowa is [personal profile] 3nanashi because that's what his first mun gave him, but I like it so I've kept it. I'd've changed it to 03nanashi when we made the Dreamwidth move if I'd thought to, though. He was codenamed Pilot 03 in the war, when nobody knew who the Gundam pilots were so the media was just calling them by numbers, and he represented the colony L3. "Nanashi" is Japanese for "no-name," which is what he was and went by for most of his childhood. Even though he adopted the name Trowa Barton pre-canon, he didn't really take it on as his rather than a lie of an alias until the very end of canon. It's an outdated name since he's very much post-canon, but I like it for that; it's a callback to his history, and (amnesia plots aside) Trowa is not somebody who forgets his own history.

River is [personal profile] river_meimei because "mèi mei" is "little sister" in Mandarin Chinese. That's what her brother Simon calls her all the time, and to a lesser extent an endearment the rest of the crew uses, and being a little sister is in many ways fundamental to how River interacts with the world -- that kind of impish, bratty charm is her go-to, and at the time I started playing her, she still very much needed people taking care of her too. So! Batya and I apped them as [personal profile] simon_doctor and [personal profile] river_meimei for deliberate parallel structure.

Regan whom I really don't play anymore, oops, is [personal profile] regan_tam. It's her name! It's boring, but look, she has all of one scene in canon. Besides, it matches [personal profile] gabriel_tam. But mostly, I couldn't think of anything better.

...I maybe have too much fun with usernames. Coming up with a username is often one of the most fun parts of apping a new character, for me.

Voodoo - [personal profile] boston_bruiser: I was on a TV Tropes kick and hoodoo_voodoo was taken, so I settled for the third-best thing.

Mako - [personal profile] fantasticfireferret: his probending team is introduced as "the fantastic Fire Ferrets!" at one point in canon. Granted, this is probably a more appropriate name for Pabu, but it's the one I got.

Connor Kenway - [personal profile] lifethatisscratched: I seriously can't believe I was the first to nab this. It's what his native name translates to in English.

B.J Blazkowicz - [personal profile] nohillforastepper: From an in-game line from The Old Blood that is remarkably consistent with his philosophy re: obstacles in his path: "No hill for a stepper, right, Billy Boy? No hill for a stepper."

Lieutenant Pete "Maverick" Mitchell - [personal profile] maverick_mitchell: this one's easy. Callsign and last name.

Ellie - [personal profile] stillwaitingformyturn: It's from a line she says at the end of the game that underscores her survivor's guilt.
vive_lavenir: (Default)

[personal profile] vive_lavenir 2015-07-24 03:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Jehan Prouvaire: [personal profile] vive_lavenir comes from the last thing Prouvaire shouts before being summarily executed, which is Vive la France! Vive l'avenir! Which literally translates to "long live France, long live the future" (Prouvaire and his friends are, at this point, in the midst of an uprising meant to bring about a freer and more just future for France). Making his journal name his last words was an easy choice.

Combeferre: [personal profile] wings_of_a_swan comes from one of Victor Hugo's more excessively purple phrases, where he compares Combeferre to an angel with the wings of a swan. It amused me to make that his journal name. I considered a few other options for him, though, like correctingthedictionary (a thing he does) or mothfrommemory (he can draw a moth from memory) or revolutionbutcivilization (basically what he believes in).

I should be doing work, but... it's Friday. So, laaaa!

Bill Pardy [personal profile] wheelsy_sheriff - He's from a town called Wheelsy, and he's the sheriff. Brilliant, right?

Hellboy [personal profile] bprd_agent_red - He's an agent for the B.P.R.D. (Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense), code/nickname "Red". Again, another mighty stroke of smarts and creativity, amirite?

Logan [personal profile] adamantiumloner - Slightly more creative in that it works on a couple different levels, but like the first two it was a quick 'I NEED A JOURNAL SO I CAN APP THIS GUY NOW' so, yeah. Adamantium for his claws, but also because the man is unbreakable, steadfast and stubborn as hell. And a loner. Taa-daa?

Charlie Kenton [personal profile] out_on_the_mat - Charlie's is a quote from the movie from a conversation with him and Bailey.
"Win or lose, the fight's not over--"
"--til someone's out on the mat."
It's also a reference to leaving it all out on the mat, which Charlie does. He leaves everything out there, whether it ends in good things or bad.

Matt Murdock [personal profile] man_without_fear - I went in to make Matt's journal fully expecting to have to get creative with the name, certain that any variation of 'Man Without Fear' to be taken. For shits and giggles, though, I gave it a shot. 'manwithoutfear' was already a journal, but imagine my giddy shock when tossing in a few underscores turned up a green check. XD So yeah, maybe it's not all that creative, but I don't give a damn. I got it, and now it's mine forever.

Puss in Boots [personal profile] cat_wth_panache - I love this journal's name, because it just sounds adorable to me. He's a cat, with panache. Nuff said.

Pleakley [personal profile] cus_im_pretty - Another movie quote. "You're just jealous because I'm pretty!" Said as him and Jumba fight over a woman's wig. XD

The Tick [personal profile] wild_blueyonder - "I am the wild blue yonder. The front line in a never-ending battle between good and not-so-good. Together with my stalwart sidekick Arthur, and the magnanimous help of some other folks I know, we form the yin to villainy's malevolent yang. Destiny has chosen us. Wicked men — you face the Tick!"

Art Mullen [personal profile] kentucky_lawman - I basically followed the Bill formula for this one. He's from Kentucky, and he's a lawman. I'm not sure why I didn't use Marshal, maybe just so it wouldn't be exactly like Bill's? IDK.

[personal profile] sunbaked_baker 2015-07-24 03:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Rae "Sunshine" Seddon - sunbaked_baker - Rae's nickname has been "Sunshine" since she was small, sunlight is her element, and she is a baker. Other characters in her canon remark that the only time they've seen her truly and fully relaxed is when she is lying out in the sunshine, soaking it in.

Yrael - mogget_cat - Mogget is the name by which Yrael is known through the majority of canon, as the knowledge of what he truly is, the Eighth Bright Shiner, is hidden. Unless Yrael is freed, he usually appears as a small white cat with green eyes. Thus mogget_cat. It was the first Livejournal username I ever created, back in 2004, so there are likely more accurate character journal names I could choose for him now, but I am rather nostalgically fond of this one.

Zelgadiss - chime_ra_tilt - This one has a few different levels of meaning to it, and various ways to slice it. 1) Zelgadiss is a chimera, thus the "chime_ra" part of his user name. 2) Ra Tilt is the strongest shamanistic magic attack in his world, which Zelgadiss specializes in, thus the "ra_tilt" part of his user name. 3) Zelgadiss was transformed into a chimera by Rezo the Red Priest, whose staff chimes quite distinctively when he walks. Zelgadiss is understandably not appreciative of his transformation, and has a hair-trigger temper - thus the answer to hearing the chime would be an immediate Ra Tilt. chime_ra_tilt ^_^

[personal profile] dragons_emrys: Emrys is what the Druids call Merlin in the series, and it's his Welsh name in Arthurian mythology, and Merlin communicates with dragons.

[personal profile] furiousroadwarrior: The film series is sometimes called the Road Warrior series, and Furiosa must have been named that for a reason :).

[personal profile] goodnight_nightvale is Cecil's sign-off for every episode he narrates.

[personal profile] heisgroot because every variation of "I am Groot" was taken.

[personal profile] holy_or_broken is from an obscure verse of "Hallelujah," which has a lot of allusions to the David story in the Bible, which is what "Kings" is based on. I couldn't find anything in the Bible verses about Jonathan that I liked as a reference, so I went with the song lyric, since it seemed appropriate for both Jonathan's story in the Bible and Jack's arc on the show.

[personal profile] myownvision, who still needs a proper EP, [spoiler for AoU] is a play on how Thor called the Vision his vision; due to Thor (and not in a small part JARVIS, too, I think)'s influence the Vision became something other than the destroyer Ultron intended him to be. But he's not just Thor's vision; he's got enough self-actualization to be his own creation. [end spoiler]

[personal profile] thekidfrombrooklyn is almost-directly a line from Captain America: The First Avenger: Johann Schmidt asks him, "What makes you so special?" and Steve answers, "Nothing. I'm just a kid from Brooklyn."

[personal profile] tipsilyeverafter if I recall correctly is from a song Frank and Sadie sing in one episode, a play on "happily ever after." Frank and Sadie drink more than Nick and Nora Charles.

Aaaaand [personal profile] tu_vas_triompher happened because I like giving Genarti crap about Enjolras's speech where he pauses to say "OH HEY ALSO FEUILLY HI THERE FEUILLY HEY HEY *WAVE* YOU'RE AMAZING, YOU'RE SO GREAT, YOUR PARENTS ARE DEAD AND YOU'RE GOING TO DIE HERE, THAT IS TO SAY TRIUMPH!!!" But uh. "You will triumph" was a more positive username than "you will die," you know? And Fwee is a positive kind of guy.

Amanda - immortalthief. This name seems straight foreward; however, there is meaning behind it. To become an immortal someone has to die. Amanda died stealing bread. So she has been a thief since before she became immortal. Though she wasn't always this good at it.

Pam's journal name [personal profile] lazy_but_loyal comes from a quote from Eric Northman, from S2E3 of "True Blood": "She is extremely lazy, but loyal." Daddy always knows what to say about his little girl. And she owns it.

Floki's journal name [personal profile] gods_that_haunt_me comes from a quote from a conversation he had with Helga in S208 of "Vikings":
Floki: I'm crazy and cracked. There is something wrong with me, which is why I choose to travel with King Horik.

Floki: I don't know yet. There's something about him. He understands the gods better than Ragnar.

Floki: I mean the real gods, the darker gods, the gods that haunt me.

I wanted something that referenced his religiousness, and also his possible mental illness, which he would most likely explain as being haunted by the darker gods.

Heh. I think I have you guys beat in unoriginal account names....
ceitfianna: (Tumnus)

[personal profile] ceitfianna 2015-07-24 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I always enjoy this DE.

[personal profile] will_scarlett was the first character journal I ever created and its his name, very simple.

[personal profile] balancingminds for Charles was trickier as he's popular. I tried a lot of combinations but ended up with this one that I like a lot. Balance is important to Charles and he's the one who keeps the balance among the X-Men.

[personal profile] heatherandsteel, how magic smells is important in Quentin's canon and this is the smell of his magic.

[personal profile] not_his_pa is because William spends the entire movie defining himself against his father. Its one of the usernames I'm proudest of as its simple and really captures him.

[personal profile] morethanprops wasn't my first choice, in canon, Moist talks about how props are furniture and I wanted something tied to that. This is what ended up working and I like it a lot now since what he does is more than props.

[personal profile] makesthings comes from a canon line. When Sameth's describing what he does and how he feels he's failing to Lirael, he says that he's only good at making things. I'm still amazed no one else had snagged this username as its perfect for him.

[personal profile] janebecomes, she's from a movie called Becoming Jane.

[personal profile] vorpatril, every variation on Ivan, you idiot or something playing with his canon nicknames was taken but weirdly Vorpatril, his last name wasn't.

[personal profile] wheatencrown, sometimes Demeter is portrayed with a crown of wheat and wheat is a major signifier of her. I think chat helped me figure out this exact construction.

[personal profile] friend_of_lucy was one that chat helped with, being Lucy's friend changed Tumnus' life and he sees himself in relation to her.

For retired, [personal profile] agloriousthing comes from the Pirate King's main song where he sings that its a glorious thing to be a pirate king.
cassiefuckingcage: (The Double Deuce)

[personal profile] cassiefuckingcage 2015-07-24 07:21 pm (UTC)(link)
[personal profile] cassiefuckingcage is fairly self-explanatory. I considered coming up with a more indirect user name - something cool and clever. Then the headvoice grabbed me by the collar and said "Listen to me, you. I am Cassie Fucking Cage and I don't need a dorkasaur like you to make me look cool."

Raiden is [personal profile] thunderbasedgod because I couldn't resist a Lil B reference. He is a god with thunder-based powers and he is also the Based God of Thunder.

Garyn is [personal profile] moonandstar. The Moon and Star was the sigil of Nerevar Indoril, probably a symbol of fealty to the Padomaics (the Moon) and Azura in particular (Azura's Star). Nerevar had a magic ring that bore this sigil. According to legend, only he could wear it without dying, which makes it a rather convenient proof for someone who wants to convince people that he's Nerevar reincarnated.

Sheogorath is [personal profile] sithis_shaped. Sithis is the eternal disembodied spirit of chaos and change in the Elder Scrolls universe (and not, as the Dark Brotherhood mistakenly believes, a god of death). His opposite is Anu, the spirit of order and stasis. According to some stories, Sheogorath was the Sithis-shaped hole in the world that was left when Lorkhan's heart was torn from his body. When the world became mortal, what was left was madness.

Retired/Semi-Retired/Inactive/Elsegame

Caius Cosades ([personal profile] oldsugartooth) comes from in-game dialogue. ("Caius Cosades? That old sugartooth?") His cover in Balmora is as a skooma addict - skooma being an illegal drug derived from a sweet substance called moon sugar.

Kane ([personal profile] closesecond) - "No, I'm not God. But I'm a close second."

Dominar Rygel XVI ([personal profile] heliumfart) farts helium. It's Farscape, just go with it.

SHODAN ([personal profile] reborn_into_beauty) - Previously an AI meant to run critical systems in space, a hacker caused, as she once put it, her "rebirth into beauty."

onceaviking: (Default)

[personal profile] onceaviking 2015-07-24 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Eric Northman (onceaviking) was once a Viking.
As Rae Seddon's Mun pointed out to me it also fits well with 'once a Viking, always a Viking.'
Also, Vampire Viking Sex God was too long.

Elrond (starrydome) must have had another name first. The one given to him by his mother. But it is never mentioned so in my head canon, he has forgotten it. Tolkien gives the meaning of Elrond as Vault of Stars, but also as Elf of the Cave (Elros is Elf of the Spray). So my head canon is this:
Maglor called the Peredhel Elf of the Cave and Elf of the Spray, since they needed names so they could tell them apart. And while they resisted the names for a while, in the end they accepted them.

Time passes. Elrond joins Gil-Galad. They speak one evening of names and Elrond is (surprised/humbled/somethingk) when he realizes that others hear his name as Vault of Stars. And he leans that there are always layers. Some we just need help to discover.
notabricklayer: (Friendly country doctor)

[personal profile] notabricklayer 2015-07-24 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
For the current roster:

'Bones' McCoy [personal profile] notabricklayer This is part of his most famous quote: "I'm a doctor, not a brick layer!"... of course, this has many, many variations because seriously, people keep forgetting exactly what's in his job description.

Sam Stewart [personal profile] takingthechance This refers to her chance to grow outside her fairly narrow role as the Vicar's Daughter in society due to the start of WWII. She makes a reference to this in her first episode, and earns quite a few incredulous looks for it. Poor Sam.

Jemma Simmons [personal profile] protect_and_survey This is a play on 'protect and serve', reflecting her dual roles as SHIELD agent and scientist.

Katya [personal profile] katyafeline When I first apped Katya, we had an Olga too, and her username was 'olyabird' (diminutive of her name and her shifted form)- so I went with the same naming pattern.

Oswin Oswald [personal profile] souffle_girlek This refers to her nick-name in her episode - the Doctor and Amy keep referring to the mysterious girl who's helping them on the asylum as 'souffle girl' since she claims she's kept herself busy for a year on a planet infested with Daleks by baking souffles. The 'ek' added on there refers to the plot twist at the end - she didn't actually keep herself as safe as she thought.

Glorfindel [personal profile] gondolin_noble Refers to the ongoing debate over whether the Glorfindel that appears in LotR is the same Glorfindel who died defending the refugees of Gondolin ages prior. I say yes. (not-so-secretly 'Glorfindel returns to Arda' stories are my favorite LotR fanfic) :D

William Blakeney [personal profile] hold_fast There's a sailor in the 'Surprise's crew that has this tattooed on his hands, and William catches sight of it in a particularly tense moment. I thought it applied well to the kid, seeing as his life got exponentially harder after the start of the movie.

Ace McShane [Unknown site tag] She's my first pup, and back then I thought (reading comprehension, what is that) that the pup names had to be in their user names, somehow (idek), so since 'Ace' both refers to the girl and anything she thinks is cool, and she thinks nitro-9 is pretty much the coolest thing ever, I went for that. I never bothered to change it once I wised up.

Sariel Rager is [personal profile] visible_sariel through being all but invisible to most people who watch her canon. She has both a backstory and a story now due to the bar. 'Nuff said. After eight? holy cow! years playing her, I couldn't change her username. It's her.
annalalaith: (Default)

[personal profile] annalalaith 2015-07-25 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
Death's journal name is Buh_bye- that is what was on the license plate on his car in the show.

Tegid is Penderwydd... hence his journal.

Naruto is wannab_hokage because he wants to be Hokage.

I did not name either Vala or Daniel, I adopted them both. But they are quite fitting.
for_good_taste: (mind over matter)

[personal profile] for_good_taste 2015-07-25 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
In canon, one of the very few cracks in Sasha's reserve is his utter hatred of tacky lamps. He uses them as targets when instructing Raz in "psychic marksmanship", and he describes their destruction as "a victory for good taste." (This scene, I've cued it about 15 seconds before.)
rudderless: (Default)

[personal profile] rudderless 2015-07-27 11:47 am (UTC)(link)
Clementine: named after an actual canon quote about Steely Dan, Clem's Band of the Soul, when she was playing groupie for them.

Dixie: Named after her signature song, which she does 'with a French flavor'.

Juliet: one of Shawn's nicknames for her.

Eponine: is truly rudderless, lacks a core in her life, which explains pretty much everything she does.

Pinkie Pie: Actual canon quote from season one. she WILL have Tuba and travel.
