What do Green Eggs and Ham and 50 Shades of Gray have in common?

They both encourage people who can barely read to try new things.

If your pups were chess pieces, which would they be and why?

This is the first DE in an aeon that's actually made me go, 'Pffft, DUH.'

[Dejah is very much the Queen. She goes where she wants, when she wants, and she's the most devastatingly effective piece on the board. You want to kill the King? You have to go through HER.]

The Master of Ceremonies is a pawn. He doesn't know if he'll survive the game. But he'll risk his life and lure more powerful pieces into the open so that they can be taken down by others, or block them from doing what they intended to do and force them to rethink things. If he's lucky, he can slip past everyone's defenses and cause a bit of damage behind enemy lines. It's his subversiveness that keeps him alive for as long as possible.

Tess actually was represented by a chess piece in canon. She's a White Knight.

For practical purposes, it denotes that she was a field agent who specialized in intel. For lovely metaphorical purposes she always wanted a white knight to save her when she was a little girl and no one ever came. So she became her own rescuer.

For Enzo, I can think of arguments in favour of rook, bishop, or queen, but I'm inclined to think he's a bishop, just because Matrix is definitely a rook, and that makes Enzo... the same, but at an angle, if you see what I mean.

Whatever he is, though, it was definitely promoted from pawn.

X is a knight. She is difficult to predict.

Nynaeve is a pawn who became a queen. Literally.

Michael is a bishop. Religious nod of the hat, and also moving on the diagonal. She interprets rules on the slant.

Wonder Woman is a queen. She can go anywhere, do anything, and protects what must be protected at all costs.

Dean is a knight, limited movement because he's mortal, but powerful and unexpected.

Galadan is a queen. He can go anywhere, he has no limits, and these days he seeks defense instead of destruction. Most of the time.

Ysalwen is a bishop. People underestimate her a lot, and then she takes them out when they're distracted by the 'bigger' players. Because people are dumb.

Raven isn't even playing this game.

Sunshine is a knight, most definitely. She goes where her people can't, and does what they can't, risking herself to save them.

Zelgadiss is a bishop. He knows plowing straight ahead won't do him any good, so he always tries to find another way to reach his target. Whether sword or sorcery, he can do either.

Yrael is the cat monopoly piece. He owns the hotel on Pennsylvania Avenue where the white king just landed, and he's coming to collect.

Jemma is a rook - a strong piece that can do a lot of damage, but not exactly known for getting creative in her strategy.

Katya is a knight - a bit unpredictable, and tending to pop up where the enemy really doesn't want her to be, but it isn't the end of the game if she is sacrificed.

Oswin is a pawn, albeit one who made it to the other side of the board and is now looking to cause quite a lot of trouble.

Glorfindel... is a queen. As for why - he's powerful, likes to charge headlong into his enemies, and tends to get resurrected.

Blakeney is a pawn. A very angry pawn, but he's definitely a pawn.

McCoy is a bishop - more often used to watch you from all the way across the board warningly so you don't go and do something stupid.

Ace... hahahaha omg her canon already addressed this, with answers ranging from pawn to queen, depending on how mean they were being to Ace in that episode. I go more with queen, in that she can cause a lot of damage very quickly, is protective over one piece in particular, and everyone feels a lot safer once she's off the board.

Ahsoka - Knight. She moves in ways that tend to surprise you. I'd say Queen but she serves causes rather than making them.
Asajj - Queen. She is her own cause and she can move in anyway she desires.
Quinlan - I think I'll say Knight because he is hard to predict.
Sam - Knight or Bishop. Not sure which would be more accurate.
Rollo - Rook. He is solid and set in his ways. He also thinks in straight lines and is focused when roused.
Briareos - Queen. He neither moves nor thinks in predicable ways and is single minded in protecting Deunan, his King piece.
Izana - Pawn at present. Like most of the pilots in Sidonia no Kishi, they are canon fodder. King in the future. After things happen, they become an incredible advantage on the battlefield, for all pilots, that sets them apart from the rank and file.
Selina - Pawn, maybe a knight. At this point in canon, unless you are Bruce or Gordon, she is a nobody.
Hank McCoy - Bishop, He thinks differently than other but can get bogged down by dogma. Knight is tempting since he remains loyal to Charles when everyone else leaves.
The Luidaeg - Without giving away too much, I would say she's the board.

Enjolras is a queen. (Shut up, Enjolras.) Powerful, versatile, offensive fighter but on behalf of others. And a leader, however much he tries to crowd-source everything he possibly can.

Cosette is a king. Protected (and in need of protection), not much of a fighter, but the heart and soul of the group.

Thor is a rook. STRAIGHT LINES, LET'S PLOW THROUGH.

Kazul is... hmm. Probably a queen, but you could make a case for bishops too. She's a fan of direct, straight-line action, but often from a slant rather than head-on, and she'll lie in wait (up to a point).

Trowa is either a bishop or a knight. Patient waiting for the right moment, unpredictable but often powerful action when he does move.

River is a knight.

(And I am not much of a chess player, so I hope I'm getting the standard symbolism right!)

Enjolras being a queen is perfect, and not only because he'd be appalled, but also because of that.

Cosette is totally the king in the Les Mis chess game.

Combeferre and Jehan Prouvaire are both bishops. Fairly powerful and important to the overall effort, and often in the role of a moral/spiritual and intellectual guide and adviser to the tactical decision maker (which has little to do with the chess game, but does have something to do with the overall role of an actual bishop). Plus they do both approach things from a slightly off-center perspective from everyone around them.

Neither of them likes this symbolism much. For one thing, they both don't much like the institution of the Church. For another, Prouvaire would rather be a knight.
