Weekend Entertainment

Guess who just saw a double feature of Moneyball and Friday Night Lights. Go on, guess.

Let's talk sports! Does - or did - your character play any? Watch any? Do they have a favorite team/player?

Gene - like every boy in England, played football as a kid. Probably boxed a bit as a teenager/during National Service. He is a rabid Man City supporter (much to his mun's endless annoyance), but is also one of those blokes who follows any sport that happens to be on. Including cricket.

Valjean/Javert/Bruce Banner/Pearly Soames/Jim Moriarty - no. Team sports were not much of a thing in the Frenchmen's time, Banner spent his life buried in books (though he runs now, but it's not for a love of sport), Pearly's way too mental and probably supernatural anyway, and Jim...ahaha. Well, I imagine he blackmailed the sports teachers to get out of PE as a kid.

Bruce Wayne - I imagine did every sport there was, and excelled at them. He's into pushing himself. He doesn't follow any particular team or player because like the other Bruce, he's doing it for another reason. Martial arts, obviously, are his thing these days.

Courfeyrac probably did a fair bit of fencing and shooting when he was younger, being from a wealthy family. I imagine he kept up the sword a bit when he was in Paris, but there were so many other fun pursuits to distract him.

Grace is a diehard Sooner football fan. So are most of the detectives she works with, except for Butch. Butch played for Texas. Butch catches a LOT of crap for it, too.

She has been known to deface a bridge or two over that particular rivalry.

One of the best nights she ever has on the show is when Barry Switzer shows up in their bar. They hang out. She even lets him drive Connie.

None of the rest of mine care about sports ball. Grace makes up for that in sheer enthusiasm. :D

Combeferre dutifully takes exercise and has learned how to ride a horse and how to shoot a gun. He also attends dances every so often, so he's competent at that. But no team sports (wrong era), and athletics aren't really his favorite form of recreation.

Jehan Prouvaire is also not from a team sport era. But he will try almost anything once. Like Combeferre, he's learned riding (but Jehan isn't very good at it) and shooting (ditto). Additionally, he's learned fencing (also not very good at it!). He is good at dancing. And he's actually in pretty good physical shape because he spends inordinate amounts of time walking around his city and its surrounding fields in a poetic daze. He also gets into bar-fights over art and politics. That's his main sport.

Brienne of Tarth also doesn't do sports. She does melées and battles and duels, and wins. If she ever took up fencing or stick-fighting as a sport, she'd be amazing. Right now, though, she only does it in total earnest.

We need to do an eventual thread where Matilda or Sonya introduces her to football (either american or 'proper').

I am SO there for that. Brienne would need coaxing but she'd get into it with a little encouragement.

No. She actually doesn't care and has thought of selling them numerous times.

Gaeta would occasionally play pick-up Pyramid games when he was younger, but he was never a big sports person. He does have a soft spot for American baseball after the Milliways game that got organized some years back, though. It was fun! Even if his pantsleg did get chewed on by a demon bunny.

Olivia's also a baseball fan -- not particularly hardcore, but she likes going to and/or watching games on TV when she gets the chance. She's a Red Sox fan out of self-preservation, mostly. (And of course she hates the Yankees, as any rational baseball fan would.)

Bolin: "LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT PRO-BENDING AT GREAT LENGTH AND HOW INCREDIBLY AWESOME IT IS :DDDDDD"

Curtis doesn't remember, and there was definitely no room for sports on the train. (While I don't think he was a jock in his pre-train life, I do think he'd play pick-up basketball with his friends with some regularity.)

Someday Hotspur is definitely going to have to discover that he has a slightly crap football team named after him.
never_shall_yield: (Default)

[personal profile] never_shall_yield 2015-08-16 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
He should meet Gene. He would gleefully shout about how crap Spurs are, and laugh about meeting their namesake.

And then they would fight, because Gene's possibly even more hair-trigger than Harry in that regard. :D
harryhotspur: (Default)

[personal profile] harryhotspur 2015-08-16 09:45 am (UTC)(link)
Bahahahaha Harry will defend them on the mere principle of the name (what the hell autocorrect), naturally. ...and because he can empathize with looking like you're gonna win and then blowing things for no reason sorry what don't mind me

I need to start keeping a list so I can calculate exactly what percentage of patrons he has gotten into fights with.

And Gene will point out the multitude of ways in which they're crap, first and foremost among them being they're not Man City, closely followed by the fact that they're a poncey Southern side, full of soft nancy tossers.

They can scrap over it, and then have a beer. Gene will teach him darts! And then arrest him next time he gets into an unlawful fight, and not see any problem with that whatsoever. *GRIN*

bahahahaha so should he discover football before then?? or will Gene be happy to explain what the hell sports are and THEN mock him for being accidental namesake of a team that is definitely going to lose that day?
never_shall_yield: (Actual Grin)

[personal profile] never_shall_yield 2015-08-16 05:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Omg, Gene will talk about football until the world stops spinning, so there's no need for Harry to have prior knowledge. He'll explain until everyone wants to kill him, mocking along the way. It'll be fun! :D

...I have a feeling these two are going to get on very well.

Or the absolute opposite, but I remain optimistic! Harry is very much Gene's type of impulsive. :D

I mean, the only person in his canon he manages to get along with is also the only other person as violent and impulsive as he is, so... it'll probably be great!

Briareus had to have played football since he was likely born in Greece, or at least spent what childhood he had there. I don't think organized sports are a huge a thing in his world, so I doubt he follows any. I think he would if given a chance though.

Luidaeg just told be she follows Roller Derby and Hockey. I think she'd follow the Sharks (both for being a local team and for the mascot). I don't know any Roller Derby teams but I know she'd aim for local ones.

The only sport they've show in Izana's canon are Garde duels and they are an avid follower. Seeing as how the culture is heavily based on Japan, I would guess baseball is kind of a favorite game for kids and so they likely played that before the academy.

Sam likely played sports as well and I am sure he watches them, but I am getting nothing specific right now. Maybe later.

None of mine care--except for one.

And ahahahahahahaha--

So Lois is absolutely a fan of the right sports, and comes down firmly on Metropolis' side every time. And in Metropolis-Gotham rivalries, she probably gets vicious and it gets hilarious. I think baseball she needs the right company or a critical game to enjoy, and she's not much of a basketball fan? But American football and some baseball she loves. Not sure where she falls on the 'proper' football line, and while she doesn't follow British sports, if someone presented her with a game of rugby I expect she'd like it. (She might have a violent streak.)

She does not think golf is a real sport, incidentally. Not sure why. Neither is poker, in her opinion.

Her real love is monster trucks. She will scream herself hoarse at a monster truck rally without an instant of regret.

She also, I suspect, used to play touch football on the base with her father's men and kicked their sorry asses. Because Lois.

Knox is almost as big a sports fan as I am. He doesn't follow golf or tennis, and soccer remains a mystery to him, but otherwise if it has a ball he watches it. He also plays some softball, and is pretty decent at it. Since he is in many ways my avatar, he roots for the Gotham versions of the Mets and Giants. He probably angsts over the Mets, same as any other good Mets fans.

Cyborg was a star athlete before the accident, and still follows sports but it's not the same since he can't play. Like a lot of athletes, watching others plays isn't as interesting.

My other pups are athletic, but organized sports eludes them.

Cassie: This will be a shock to precisely none of you, but Cassie entered and won a lot of martial arts tournaments as a kid and as a teen before she joined the Army.

Raiden: This will be even less of a shock to you, but the Eternal God of Thunder isn't much of a sports guy.

Garyn: Garyn did a lot of physical training, but it was all in the service of learning how to become a mercenary.

Sheogorath: He likes the sports where the heads bounce around on the field. Doesn't exist, you say? He just invented it.

Gordon was into downhill mountain bike racing; he was in a regional championship and doing pretty well when he went over the handlebars at fifty miles an hour. He gave up competing in the sport after that but still rode whenever he could. (This was my excuse for why Mr. Seattle-Area Theoretical Physicist had a phenomenal sense of balance even on tiny narrow paths.)

Adrian Shephard is into rugby. I'd say hunting but he doesn't consider it a sport so much as a thing you do, like home maintenance or grocery shopping. I don't think he has a professional team he favors, though.

Ellen played baseball in the Vault as a kid. These days, not so much.

Santo is his sport. Similarly, Wee Mad Arthur constitutes a football riot all by himself.

Stacker Pentecost has picked up a fondness for sepak takraw, which is basically flying spin kick ninja volleyball. Not sure if he favors a given team or a given country's team (although I think he may follow Malaysia's players).

Fawkes and Edward Kenway don't particularly participate in or follow anyone's sports. I don't think organized sports exist in Thedas, so Varric mostly just gets told he can't compete in archery contests (it's canon, there's a sign on a wall in Dragon Age Inquisition saying 'archery contest this week, Varric and Bianca not allowed').

Clem: was a gymnast! Quit when she hit puberty.

Dixie: Sports are for people who sweat

Juliet: Name anything, she's tried to participate in it.

Pinkie: Same, also frequently does aerobics.

Eponine: Trying to stay alive on the streets counts, I suppose.
