Your pup’s living quarters are on fire. They only have time to save one treasured possession from the flames. What do they save?

But... but... the fire is the treasured possession. I know! I'll share it with everyone else and show everyone how great it is!

Woola.

If Woola's not there, then John's journals.

Assuming there aren't any people or animals in the room, Milliways Feuilly is going to grab up the stack of Fawkes' library book and as much of his accompanying translation as possible. He's almost done with the work, dammit! And he's not going to be responsible for losing a precious library book from that world!

This may not be a novel situation for Bossuet. Anyway, in his current living situation, the priority list for saving from fire is Joly > whatever Joly says to grab > mandrake (hey, it can't escape on its own!) > cats > the first bottle of whatever he can find on hand > the prehistoric beetle.

Helen Ramirez will grab her bank book.

The Chief will grab her current case files.

Djehuty and Gredya don't have this problem, for different reasons.

Tess already has most things she deems important in fireproof safes or rooms, so she'd probably just grab her laptop.

Given that Liranan is probably dragging her from the flames as we speak, Ysalwen will make sure to grab Zevran's earring if she's not wearing it, and her staff if she is (she usually is, but that would be her first choice unless stuff you're wearing doesn't count for this, in which case the other).

X-23 Will take her cats. Look, she can walk back in through the flames to get both of them, okay? It's fine. *cough*

Nynaeve wears Lan's ring so that's all right, but she'd grab her satchel of herbal remedies.

Michael would grab her awesome Doc Martens, I suppose. Or her sword, if for some reason it were not in the hammer-space pocket where she normally keeps it.

Galadan would take his friendship bracelet from River, come on are you kidding.

Raven would take his coat.

Wonder Woman would take her lasso. Or the invisoplane disc thing if it was a sentient being at the time.

Dean would take Sam. Come on, we already know this from canon. IT HAPPENED WHEN HE WAS FOUR.

Assuming all the other living-or-Millidead occupants of the room had escaped, Joly's grabbing the book Autor gave him; he doesn't have a lot of books that are his here (no other books that are his, actually) and that would make it mean something even if it wasn't from a friend. But it's that, too, so the book's second only to the co-habitants.

Again assuming the other inhabitants of the room were safe: Bahorel would take the weird Asgardian super-science needles. (If he had a choice of his stuff from his Paris life, it would be a much more fraught call, but he doesn't and it isn't.)

Gordon's saving the crowbar did you even need to ask

Shephard's probably saving his gas mask, not so much because it's treasured as because HECU was trained to respond to incendiary and explosive incidents and he'd really rather not die of smoke inhalation.

Ellen's grabbing Karkat's storage deck. She keeps most of her inventory in it. I don't care if this is cheating, that is how she reacts.

Fawkes does not really have a lot of possessions in the first place. Probably whatever book he was reading at the time. His sledge or his Gatling laser if he can't find the book.

Stacker, if he has not given it to her already, is taking Mako's shoe from when she was little.

Varric is saving Bianca again I do not understand why you needed to ask

Santo is saving his very first trophy or championship belt, whichever is older. The silver mask does not count against his treasured possessions; for all intents and purposes it's his face.

Edward Kenway is going to be so pissed because I'm pretty sure his major treasured possession is his living quarters, the Jackdaw. Maybe something his wife gave him before he went off privateering and pirating.

Wee Mad Arthur's going to save his explosives collection.

Enjolras: In order of priority, Combeferre if he's in the room and needs saving, then the flag from the barricade, then the placard Feuilly made from the door. (After that -- uh, I dunno, if he had more time to grab anything else, he'd grab an armful of whatever scientific stuff or journals of Combeferre's seemed most precious to him, which would probably mean a thoroughly ill-assorted heap missing key pieces, but what can you do. And maybe his pot of cacti, but sorry Bahorel, he probably wouldn't prioritize that enough to grab it over the rest. Those are the only possessions Enjolras really cares about, even though he'd feel bad about having library books burn.)

Cosette: Oh geez. It's all about the people, really! There are a lot of things that have minor sentimental value, because Cosette is a sentimental kind of person, but not save-first-from-the-flames levels of sentiment. I'm not sure she'd grab anything. Marius's giant rambling love letter to her, maybe, but only if she were in the same room -- she wouldn't run into another room for it or whatever.

If she were still living at her father's home, she might grab Valjean's little chest whose mysterious contents she doesn't know, if he weren't there to do it, but she isn't.

Kazul's house is a stone cave that can't really be set on fire, between the construction and the magic that's probably on it. (We know there's a draconic fire resistance spell that can be set on people, although it's short-term. No word about a long-term one for possessions, but... dragons breathe fire when annoyed or sneezing, so it seems logical that there's SOMETHING set up.) Anyway, taking this in the spirit of the question rather than the letter: Cimorene or any other human friends first, as much of her library as she can carry second.

Thor lives in a giant palace, so I don't know if I should interpret this as his rooms or the whole damn palace. Either way... again, it's people, because Mjölnir really doesn't count. (He can just leave Mjölnir in the middle of the flames until the place burns down and summon it to him out of the ashes, if he really wants.) Um.

Obviously, people first, and then the stables, and such. But that aside, at this point, the answer is probably not so much his possessions as whatever he thinks Loki's most treasured possession is/was.

Trowa: Catherine first. His go-bag second, which lives under his bed and contains his flute plus everything he'd need to hit the ground running if he needed to -- gun, ID, cash, changes of clothing. Old habits die hard. His computer third -- simultaneously, if he could. Heck, he might store it in easy reach of the go-bag when he's not using it, on general principles of the same old habits.
2goodarms: Curtis standing up amid a cluster of kneeling tail-sectioners (out of the crowd)

[personal profile] 2goodarms 2015-08-21 01:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Assuming all other living things are in the clear (like Edgar, Gogo, Pabu, Mako, etc etc) --

If it's not on his person for whatever reason, Curtis grabs the pendant Dejah gave him. It's pretty much the only priceless possession he has, and he doesn't want her to think he's trapped inside a burning building.

Gaeta grabs his rank/flight pins.

Bolin...I think saves his pro-bending uniform?

Olivia probably has at least one picture of her mom around the house, so once she's got her badge, gun, and phone, she grabs that. (...I know that kind of breaks the "one item" rule, but she always keeps the badge/gun/phone combo so close that it'd take her half a second, tops, to retrieve all three. Have you ever had to get a federal work ID reissued? It's a pain in the ass, man.)

Ahsoka: People. If there are non, then her pack. She doesn't really have a lot of possessions right now.

Asajj: Her lightsabers or whatever other weapon she carries. If she could only grab one, it'd be her old masters'.

Quinlan: Assuming this is a room he has somewhere and not on the ship he shares with his family, his comm. Possessions are less important than being able to get back to his family.

Briareus: Deunan. Barring that, any guns or riffles he has.

Hank: His most current notebook. I feel like there should be something Raven has given him but I can't think of anything right now.

Selina: The locket with her mother's picture.

Sam: His current wingsuit. How else is he going to help save any one else trapped in the fire?

The Luidaeg: Fire? You think I'm scared of that shit?

Izana: I'm not sure. I'm sort of getting a book that her grandmother used to read to her.

Rollo: The arm ring his father gave him.

Assuming the people (where that's relevant) are all saving themselves...

Gene would say 'sod the house' and run out to make sure his garage - and therefore his car - was not burning.

Javert - has no possessions he cares for, or is attached to.

Valjean - 'the inseparable'; the trunk which contains the first clothes he bought for Cosette. They are mourning clothes, and he takes them everywhere. The Bishop's candlesticks are also v. important but depending on where we are in canon, they might be off buried in the woods - and given a choice between the two, he'd take the clothes.

Courfeyrac - has not collected much since coming to Milliways, and has nothing from his previous life. I'm going to go with the camera he's been using, because it has pictures of his friends on it.

Bruce Wayne - has already had his house burn down once, and wasn't overly concerned. He'd save what he could out of the Batcave, starting with the suit.

Bruce Banner - would grab the harddrive containing all the research he's done into his condition over the years. It hasn't helped him yet, but he wouldn't want to start over.

Pearly and Jim - probably burn their own houses down for fun. If forced to pick something, Pearly would go for the latest piece of stolen art that's giving him a colourgasm, and Jim would take any physical details of his latest job/plot.

Combeferre would of course give Enjolras a hard shove out the door, should that be required, before running back into the room to scoop up the barricade flag, Feuilly's placard, the pterosaur bits and other specimens, the books on evolution, the books on geology, the books on 20th and 21st century history, some of whatever he's concocting in the still...

...yeah, look, he can't die twice! (Can he?) But if he really had to pick just one thing, people aside, he probably would go with the barricade flag.

Jehan Prouvaire grabs Marguerite, the kitten from the Temple of Bast who accompanied him to Milliways from the Labyrinth. This isn't even a question. He doesn't grab Bahorel because Bahorel set the fire and is already on his way out the door.

Brienne of Tarth grabs Podrick Payne, the 12-year-old boy tagging along with her, or (grudgingly) her other tag-along Ser Hyle Hunt, if either needs it. But if all the people are okay, then she grabs her sword Oathkeeper, forged from the Valyrian steel of Ned Stark's sword Ice. The Lannisters stole Ice from Ned after killing him, and forged two swords from it. Jaime Lannister quietly gave the larger one, Oathkeeper, to Brienne for her mission to save Sansa Stark, so she can "defend Ned Stark's daughter with Ned Stark's steel." No way Brienne risks that sword, even though it can probably withstand most fires.

If she has time, she grabs the piece of paper Jaime Lannister gave her saying she's working for King Tommen, and her shield, in that order.

Oswin: Her computer tablet - her cat is intelligent enough to save itself, and she needs some connection to her spiderbots. Doors open to everywhere, people, even places with Daleks. It's important.

Glorfindel: His sword - honestly, he's lost all of his possessions enough times by now that this is hardly a new event, and he'd rather keep some form of defense (just in case whoever set the place ablaze comes back).

William: Doesn't really have much to save, and nothing he does have is irreplaceable. If he had it on him, he'd grab the book about Lord Nelson that the captain gave him.

Katya: Also doesn't have much that is irreplaceable - she'd grab her bird partner if he's in there, but hopefully Skellig is able to save himself. Other than that, she'd grab whatever wards she could get her hands on while getting out, but she can make new versions of those too.

Camille: ... Probably an old photo album, honestly. Unlike some police officers, she doesn't take files home. (We're looking at you, Poole)

Ace: ... Actually, mostly she's running as fast as she can because there was some nitro-9 in there and it's gonna go up in about a minute. No, really, run now.

Bones: There's a box under his bunk that has a few letters and pictures from his daughter, and a few from his parents. That comes - the rest of it is all just StarFleet standard issue.

Jemma: .................................... So, let's just assume someone else is there to force her to not try and take everything. Seriously - Ward, May, someone, someone stop this gal. So really, whatever project is closest at hand gets saved.

Sam: She'd grab her bag - it has her id cards and ration card, as well as her helmet and driving gloves and wallet. All the 'oh dear lord been bombed again' gear.

That's just canon.

Aang: His glider

Will: The knife Robin gave him which is always close at hand and the cross from Kate Bishop, the little pouch he has that holds the various other sentimental things from Milliways' people but all three of those would be near at hand anyway. He's used to traveling light.

Charles: Raven, Erik, then it gets hard as he wants to take his notes and books.

Quentin: Toby, Raj, Cagney and Lacey-Toby's cats and Spike, the rose goblin. I know he must have something connected to his parents but I have a sense that its close by and easily grabbed so people come first. Toby might stay in and try to be a hero and it would get messy.

Moist: As long as he can reach his nearest suit and maybe his box of tricks, he'll be fine.

William: Mark, his mother, whatever money they have hidden and a gun because someone probably set that fire. Canon starts with their barn being burned down and he risks his life for horses and saddles, he's really aware of what's needed to keep going.

Sameth: His nearest project and a weapon.

Jane: Cassandra and her writing.

Demeter: Get Kore out and then the two of them are going to be very annoyed at whoever set their home on fire.

Ivan: Tej, a comm and a weapon, then he's going to call ImpSec and find out who tried to set them on fire.

Tumnus: Lucy, his writing if he's at Cair Paravel, if at his home, his writing, portrait of his father.

Clementine: Her limited-edition Steely Dan boxed set.

Dixie: The ragdoll she saved from multiple childhood misadventures

Juliet: Eventually, her engagement ring; right now, her gun.

Pinkie Pie: Would probably let it all burn if Gummy was okay.

Eponine: a lock of Marius' hair.
