Twins: A Public Service Announcement

Hello! This is TL (Viola/Cesario-mun) and Lark (Sebastian/Roderigo-mun)

... wait. Reverse that. ANYWAY WE ARE HERE TO DISCUSS IDENTITY CONFUSION.


Viola and Sebastian are from Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. Twelfth Night relies on suspension of disbelief to convince us that when Viola is dressed as a man, she is identical to Sebastian. This goes so far as (spoilers!) the man who nursed Sebastian back to health mistaking Viola for him, and the woman who loves Viola marrying Sebastian thinking he is she -- and then mistaking Viola for him.

* Feel free to have your characters confuse Viola and Sebastian! In fact, we’d prefer that you do.
* If your character already knows/suspects that Viola is a woman in disguise, still feel free to think that Sebastian is her.
* Please don’t explain anything! If your character loves Shakespeare/has supernatural powers/sorts things out at some point along the line, please don’t let them explain what’s going on to the twins or anyone else. We’re hoping to keep this going for a while. If it seems impossible that they wouldn’t do so, maybe just have them only ever meet one twin.
* If there’s some reason you think your character would absolutely be able to tell them apart but you still want them to meet, please just talk to us first!
*We apologize in general for the relentless gender binary, it’s how the characters conceive of themselves and their circumstances. Feel free to have your character interpret their dress/self expression in any other way, just as long as they don’t give away the game or learn to tell the twins apart without chatting to us first!

I would like X to meet them, but I am pretty sure she would be able to tell them apart by scent. Because hormones. (And canon has her being able to detect low cholesterol, so.) Also scent is more important to her than sight, so I don't even know that she would know there COULD be a mistaken ID problem to spill about.

But I can keep it out of her actual dialogue, because she doesn't -- out people? And is not super prone to using people's names anyway.

Or just have her not tag, I mean, I will not cry and I have other people to throw at them!

Ooh, X. I guess if she wouldn't even realize there was a mistaken identity involved, it could work!

Lark says you can tag Viola whenever you'd like. I'd probably ask to hold off on Sebastian for a couple EPs, since she seems like one of the most likely to figure it out (if she doesn't just go scent= totally new person), but he'd be delighted by a lady with claw hands.

This might be interesting for The Count, at first. He would be able to distinguish between them by smell.

Ooh, this will be fun. Of mine, I think only Quentin has met Viola, so he can mistake Sebastian for her at some point.

Since you're doing this, to be safe, I won't tag with Charles unless you want me to or Demeter though she might just go, huh at them.

Charles is probably a bad idea, haha. We can talk later about Demeter depending on how stuff rolls and what you decide is likely.

I have a feeling Alanna might *eventually* begin to suspect shenanigans, but when she does she will RESOLUTELY insist to ANYONE who tries to tell her otherwise that there is but one person. CESARIO.

Because clearly if there ARE shenanigans afoot, there is a very good reason for them.

Lady Mary has only met Viola so far, and doesn't yet know him by name, but knows her Shakespeare well enough that she would figure out what's going on were she to meet Sebastian. Would it be better for the two of them to hold off meeting for now?

Hi!! I'm so sorry for the delay -- I think that's probably for the best! And we are planning to have them clear up the mess at some point-- then allll the threads :D

Jay is observant but he's protective of his friends and his first reaction will be to worry if he sees Sebastian looking unwell. He'll worry about that before he'll pay any attention to identity.

But it's up to you if you want to continue with the thread.

Okay! I think it'll go okay if we play with it with the intent of a short thread (Sebastian already having acquired keys to his room), so it doesn't spur too much questioning on Jay's part :). Then if we want to play again when Sebastian is less ill, we can figure out how that'll go then -- I suspect they'll tend to shorter glancing threads until Sebastian and Viola have figured themselves out.
