Hotspur is easily won over by sincere idealism (assuming the ideals are roughly compatible with his) and feats of valor (or stories about them). Or whoever will give him a horse. Get on his bad side with irony, criticism, or being boring.
Viola likes most people! Excessive pride won't get far with her, generosity will.
Arabella can't stand cloying, fake niceness-- which is different from being polite. She is drawn to cleverness, and maybe a bit to slightly odd but honest people.
Pfffft Hal takes some sort of cosmic detour as he passes through the door between London and Milliways, finds himself drunkenly wandering in with a miniature horse.
For Varric, from the Dragon Age wiki: "Solving problems and gaining advantage through diplomacy, outright lies, and even blackmail will impress him, while straightforward violence and thuggery leaves him cold. He also responds well to joking, flirting and sarcasm and to mild greed. Beneath his silver tongue, however, he's a goodhearted person and will appreciate people who look out for their families and are kind to dwarves.... In general, you can gain Varric's approval by being friendly with him, supporting him during and after the fight with Cassandra, and occasionally joking with him, or being witty in conversations with others with him in the party. Blaming him during and after the fight with Cassandra will gain disapproval as well as showing disinterest during conversations."
I'm trying to codify the 'get on the good side' options for my other characters, as I don't want to post their big angry rage buttons until I have the good stuff laid out too.
Sunshine's good side? Enjoy her cooking. Like cooking in general. Like baking! Be friendly and have a good sense of humor.
Sunshine's bad side? Be unrepentantly responsible for injury or damage to others, or for the deaths of others. Be a parasite, whether literally or metaphorically benefiting from the harm of others. Be manipulative. Consider yourself better than other people. Indulge in smug, mean-spirited mocking of other people. Be Hannibal Lecter.
Enjolras: Good side: Compliment his friends (and mean it). Believe passionately in liberty and equality. Bad side: his bad side still holds a lot of earnest desire to connect as human beings and talk about your disagreement, right up to the point when the two of you are shooting at each other. But: be a monarchist; be cruel; refuse to take anything seriously no matter what the situation.
Thor: Good side: cheerful impetuousness in fighting, pranks, or other hearty-but-dumb life decisions. Showing kindness. Bad side: insult his family, his country, or his honor. Even worse if you won't then fight it out like honest warriors (adjusted for superpowers level.)
Kazul: Good side: intelligence and dry wit, and responding calmly and pragmatically to dragons and/or weird situations. Bad side: try to steal her magic and/or her stuff. Be insulting.
Good side: Be a lion. Bad side: This one's hard because I feel like he mostly treats actual evil as an interesting puzzle to solve. Probably something like making Cathy cry. Or just being boringly evil.
Ha! You're not wrong, but I count "you are a problem I need to solve in ways detrimental to you and your plans" as his bad side. So -- being needlessly cruel, trying to take over the world, trying to engineer a colony drop...?
You're 100% right about the good side, though. And, okay, he does like some humans too. Be competent, have the good of the world at heart, etc. "Be entertaining" may make him like you but will not necessarily stop him from trying to kill you also.
Good side: Treat him like an equal. Don't condescend. Look like you've had a rough time of it lately.
Bad side: Be -- or just look -- rich. Be totally unaware of the luxuries you have (where "luxuries" can equal stuff like, uh, food and warm clothes and something approaching a stable life). Treat him like he's inferior, stupid, or in any way less than you. Say anything about how you "deserve" to be where you are and have what you have. Give him charity out of pity rather than the genuine goodness of your own damn heart. Do any of the above to someone else he'd classify as Tail, even if they're a total stranger to him, or to anybody he cares about no matter their social standing.
It's, er, really easy to get on Curtis' bad side if you're not from a postapocalyptic hellscape. *sheepish*
X-23 -- Good side: Be kind, and patient, and protect people. Or just protect people. Or be patient combined with either of the other two. Assholes with hearts-of-gold are also probably okay, unless you get sarcastic before she knows how to talk to you. Bad side: Like hurting people. Not want to stop.
Ysalwen Surana -- Good side: Look at her as a person. Believe in freedom and kindness. Be funny. Be able to talk about science and/or magic with her. Extensively. Bad side: Hurt people, be a stuck-up-the-ass noble who hoards it, be apathetic or whiny.
Raven -- Good side: Exist. Be funny. Well, make him think you are hilarious, which -- kind of comes with existing. Or be evil, because evil is the most hilarious of all!!!!!! Bad side: Hurt Ace or Moiraine or Coyote. Unless Coyote has it coming. Or either of the others. Kind of. Um. Stagnate in your life. Be stuck in a rut. Being on his bad side rarely lasts. Metaphorically. And literally, if you live long enough! Ask Blodwen!
Dean Winchester -- Good side: Be chill and like to shoot the shit, be into cars, be a hunter who is not a dickhole, be family. Bad side: Hurt Sam. Be a dickhole. Be something supernatural that's killing people. (Probably being a human that's killing people is bad news, too. Come on now.)
Nynaeve al'Meara -- Good side: Be sensible. Do what you're told. Put up with her brusque impatience and temper and just ride it out. Bad side: Get yourself hurt. Be evil. Get yourself in trouble while not listening to her.
Michael the Archangel -- Good side: Exist and try to be a good person. For a given definition of 'good'. Care. Bad side: Be any devil or demon that is not her brother. Be evil. Indiscriminately hurt people and like it, esp people who cannot protect themselves. She will smite.
Galadan: Good side: Uh. Be Mary Lennox, Gabriel Tam, or River Tam. Or be someone those people care about I guess. Or be useful to him! Bad side: It's more like an indifferent side, really. And it's anyone not in those other categories. Really bad side: Hurt Mary or Gabriel or River. Esp with them unable to strike back. or dead. Do not kill any of them. Your world will probably regret it.
Wonder Woman: Good side: Be kind, be open, be a person that exists and is trying to do good and be happy. Bad side: Be an asshole just for kicks. Be evil. Try to conquer the galaxy. Try to conquer a country. Try to hurt people that depend on you because your life is shit and making other people pay for that feels good.
Yugo: Are you a person? Congratulations, you are on Yugo's good side. He has no bad side. Let us not speak of his bad side anymore. His bad side is definitely not a separate being full of rage for everything. Let us not speak of his bad side. We have always been at war with Eurasia.
Sherral: Sherral is won over by directness, competence, and at least some form of higher ideals. Are you pursuing a goal and being open, honest, and pragmatic about your doing so? Yay! Are you prone to muddying things by lying or distorting the truth, have no aspirations, are content to coast by, or are self deluded? Please stand over there.
Eden: Are you a person? Eden is totally apathetic about you and would probably not notice if you died in front of him. Are you an inanimate object? Eden might have trouble distinguishing you from people.
Good side: Act smartly, do what she tells you to, be respectful, don't question her or her motives, don't think you know her. Bad side: Be an idiot, try to take over the world and/or enslave humanity, kill her without her permission.
Good side: Be gracious, gentle, honorable, strong. Being powerful and understanding what that power means. Using that power for the good of others. A dry wit doesn't hurt, either. Also, a fire in the belly.
Bad side: Be cruel. Prey on the weak. Fail and give up. Be useless. Lie, cheat, steal, obfuscate. Indulge in chaos, pain and destruction for no other cause than it amuses you. (That last one will get you killed with Dejah, rules or no rules.)
a) Have a dog. b) Be at all shifty about nuclear tech. Or actively endanger his Earth, whether through incompetence or intent.
Clint:
a) Make internal sense (or as much as you can, when viewed from outside). He likes most people >.> b) Treat him condescendingly. He's very sensitive to condescension.
Legolas:
a) Have interesting things/be interesting. b) ugh being BORING obviously. Or, well, being an orc.
Melinda May:
a) Competence. b) Incompetence. (Threatening her team.)
Darcy Lewis:
a) like she's going to tell you b) ... like she's going to tell you.
Sebastian:
a) Pretty much you just have to say hi. b) Try to pick fights with him when he's done LITERALLY NOTHING BRO
Quatre:
a) being ~~~*a person*~~~ b) It's hard to get Quatre to genuinely dislike you, instead of just feel bad for you and how wrong you are. Probably something really petty, like if you or your actions are forcing him to do paperwork instead of hanging out with his friends or his boyfriend.
John Connor:
a) Being willing to talk to him about how things work. b) Asking too many questions, and refusing to accept his answers.
Helen Haras-uquara:
a) ... I guess maybe having books of good quality and standards that you will lend her. b) Lying. Especially when the lies are WORTHLESS. (spoilers: 98% of lies are worthless. The remaining ones are clearly just shortcuts that anyone with any moral fiber would refuse to take. Unfortunately her bestie has no moral fiber.)
