Stand-in DE

Hullo! Grabbing today's DE:

What's something your character is weirdly judgmental about? I don't mean great big moral stances like "my pup is strongly against domestic violence, bigotry, slavery, and the wealthy controlling the government." I mean, what's the stuff that your character gets just maybe a little too worked up about? Bad handwriting? Historical accuracy in movies? Some subject that people talk about when they don't know anything about it? And do they think they get more grumpy about it than they should, or do they want to argue that it is that important that there shouldn't be macaws in a television scene about an ancient Roman market, gosh darn it!*

* I'm looking at you, Rome.

Ellen was raised in Vault 101, which had a baseball team and several other sports to promote physical activity in the underground population. The ruleset they had for baseball included a few modifications to account for having to play indoors in a room with a 30-foot ceiling, but was otherwise largely indistinguishable from baseball as it was played in the mid-1950s, rule-wise. She ran across information about modern baseball in Milliways, and she does NOT approve of the designated hitter rule. AT ALL. And she will argue on that point if someone tries to defend it.

Gene - not much. He's not picky, unlike some he could mention, Sam.

Javert - ahahaha. Everything? No, untidy clothes is his Thing. His own more than anyone else's. He doesn't expect anyone else to care, the animals.

Valjean - women and men working together. OH, THE HUMANITY.

No time for the rest just now, might be back later. Stupid work and essays and shit, it's Friday night sald;kjfl. *grumps*

Enjolras is 100% absolutely That Guy so far as "Okay no but actually INTERESTINGLY ENOUGH you're totally wrong about Robespierre's early career--!" goes. He's capable of not voicing these corrections, but he will be visibly restraining himself in that case. It IS important and you absolutely should argue with him if you disagree!

He's also... not judgmental, exactly, but very quick to go "okay you do you, have fun, I'm peacing out" about a lot of stuff that seems frivolous to him.

Cosette really likes gardens, okay. Even if you come from a time when you can get fruit out of season any day of the week you ought to care about that fact! No but it's important that these flowers don't bloom together, it's a totally valid artistic choice to put silk versions of them together on a bonnet but it's interesting! Proper care of apple trees is important! You don't have to care about it but you ought to recognize that it's a thing worth caring about, darn it.

Kazul is judgy about many many things. Let's go with bad desserts, and general dinner party planning. She doesn't care about formal etiquette -- she knows it, she'll throw it out the window if she wants to, so there -- but she cares that you put thought into it to make it a good party. And the food better be good, within whatever your means are.

Thor is judgy about courtesy. Not necessarily etiquette, though they're related of course, but courteous behavior to everyone around you. If you're discourteous, it better be either deliberate and well justified, or else a genuine culture-gap misunderstanding, or else he's judging you hard.
genarti: Enjolras looking annoyed and disapproving, and/or about to go revolutionize all the things. ([les mis] both agog and aghast)

[personal profile] genarti 2015-10-02 06:57 pm (UTC)(link)
hahahaha I wasn't even thinking that so much as minor fact-correction, for Enjolras, because I figured it went without saying. But yeah, if someone starts in on that --

Well, Combeferre has probably gotten there first with a scathing one-liner, really, but if not Enjolras is going to politely intensely Learn You A Thing with citations provided.

If Enjolras ever inquires about the Death of Marat among Sunshine's desserts, Rae will likely end up flustered and probably terribly disappoint Enjolras with how much she doesn't know about Marat or what he stood for or the circumstances surrounding his death (which is a situation I'm totally up for, sometime).

i mean in the one scene he has with a servant he's arguably nicer to the servant than to his wife, so...

[personal profile] harryhotspur 2015-10-02 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
so what you're saying is that feuilly and harry making out is explicitly justified by canon

Feuilly so needs to come across one of those 'restaurant servers survive on tips' infographics. I might die of laugh.

Also now Nori really wants to find Hal's pet peeves. Because she's that kind of person.

Glorfindel: Gets weird about people asking him things and trying to be all polite or coy about it and not just directly asking - give him an out and he will completely and utterly fail to answer the question. Elrond can get around this, as can anyone Elrond is related to (except Galadriel, nope, gonna give her a hard time, always, ALL THE TIMES).

Jemma: Gets twitchy when things aren't written correctly, like... it's not .1mls, it's 0.1mls, guys, the 0 is important, WRITE THE 0, do it. And for the love of all things holy WRITE YOUR UNITS.

Katya gets annoyed if she finds a sword not stored properly. Just. She loves swords. And you're abusing yours, you may find it permanently missing from here on out. Also flavored vodka, wtf, no, NO. And Wonderbread. That's just unholy stuff. No.

re: Jemma

Yeah, but, that's not minor. THERE'S A REASON WE DO THINGS THIS WAY.

(The reason is so we don't screw stuff up later THAT IS THE REASON)

As a voyager from the dark times when scientific methods were just beginning to be standardized, Joly is totally on Jemma's side, here. ACCURACY MATTERS, don't leave behind those "a flask of solution" type measurements, don't be that personnnn.

If someone writes out something in grains Jemma judges SO HARD. So hard.

She's also one of those people who bakes with a scale. Cups and teaspoons and such are SO INACCURATE.

Education. "I don't get it. What's the big deal with books?" OMG explosion incoming. Document your test results. Write it DOWN.

Oh and she's weirdly picky about the proper writing implement. Whole mornings have been disrupted because she couldn't find her favourite pen. ~facepalm~

Clint is pretty chill on minor things. Misrepresentation of people's intentions bothers him, but I think that's non-minor.

Chuck is judgmental about everything he knows anything about >.>. I guess the major issue is he gets frustrated at anything stated inaccurately about the Jaeger program even if it's really tiny and not important and the inaccurate explanation is easier. *HE* can state things inaccurately, you see -- because he knows what he's talking about. Everyone else is just a poser if they do it. >.> (AKA: HE'S RIGHT, BRO. NO OVERREACTING HERE. IF YOU THINK HE'S OVERREACTING HE'LL FIGHT YOU)

John Connor cares a lot about the Oz books and chess history. He realizes he's overreacting, and tries not to, but it burns.

Quatre has feelings on clothing (as relevant to occasion). You can wear whatever you want, but please do not try to actually have an argument with him about appropriate dress per occasion. He knows exactly what he is doing thank you. (He doesn't feel it very polite to argue, but he feels entirely justified)

... that's all I got rn.

I think just the original 14 -- at least, they're the only ones he references (also the only ones I've read!). He has the first memorized, according to TSCC, and his cover name is John Baum :).

...almost all of my pups are really rather patient people. With the obvious exception of Hotspur, who is irrationally irritated by anything and everything.

Viola and Liz will both get their feathers ruffled by excessive shows of privilege and pride, but neither are in positions (in their opinion) where they can generally do anything about it.
