DE: My favourite recipe

There are cookbooks for everything under the sun, including fannish stuff. There are food blogs for everything fannish and/or historical as well! Janice Poon is going to publish a 'Hannibal' cookbook, there is a famous site making all the foodstuffs GRRM mentions in ASOIAF, and my sister has a blog about Icelandic cooking that I often use as inspiration for what our Vikings eat. There is Discworld food, and Harry Potter food, and I am sure that somewhere out there, somebody has posted recipes for Rae 'Sunshine' Seddon's famous cinnamon rolls, specifically.

So, let's talk about food and your charries. Canon, fanon or head-canon: what do they eat? Are there posts and sites about it? What's their favourite, and do you have a recipe for it? Extra kudos if you've made it, and have pictures to post and/or comments about making the recipe for yourself. And then, Milliways -- what new stuff did they learn to appreciate in the bar? Their favourite drink? How do they take their coffee?

Let's make this post a bit of a Milliways cookbook!

Sunshine's canon gives us little information about what food Rae eats (I think the only foods she is mentioned actually eating are bread, apples, pears, an egg and cress sandwich, fried eggs, orange juice, water, and tea), and in many cases all that is given to the reader about the food she makes is the names of the dishes: Bitter Chocolate Death, Meringuamania, Caramel Cataclysm, Chocoholia, Tweedle Dumplings, Lemon Lechery. Really, only Death of Marat is described in detail, and that is through a flashback to its creation and naming. I've head-canoned what most of them are like, but it's all conjecture.

In Milliways, Rae's favorite drink is tea (of various sorts), which she usually lightly sweetens. Autor has introduced her to truffles, and Dr. Lecter has introduced her to new fruits and (vegetarian) foods from around the world.

Do you have any actual recipes for what your headcanon says Sunshine's pastries are like? I know that we've been talking about the Death of Marat.

I have some recipes I've found that look pretty close to my mental images of some of Rae's desserts.

Canon Creations
Death of Marat
Bitter Chocolate Death
Meringuamania
Caramel Cataclysm
Chocoholia
Lemon Lechery (or this one)

Creations From While In Milliways
Mojito Key Lime Pie
Primordial Fudgecake

There are others she's made in Milliways, but I can't remember them now... ^_^?

Star Wars: I don't think I've seen any attempts at recreating any foods shown in any of the Star Wars media. Not that SW is particularly creative. They've shown what blue milk, things that look like energy/snack bars, and space waffles.

Sindonia no Kishi: Despite being a thousand years or so in the future, they mostly eat Japanese cuisine or soak up solar radiation.

Gotham/MCU/XMCU: New York food. Nothing special.

October Daye: San Francisco food, but more focused on fast food or food that can be found late at night. Luidaeg does make some wicked chowders though, some might not even transform you!

Appleseed: Again, familiar foods with an Asian & American focus.

I'm kind of embarrassed that all my canon's foods are so boring.

I think that among these, we'd really like to hear more about Luidaeg's chowders, magical or not. They don't sound boring at all!

I imagine she'd also be pretty damn good at gumbo as well. I'll have to see/think of what canon has shared and what she'd be willing to share with me.

I know it goes beyond the basic clam chowder.

ETA: Okay, feeling these out as I am pretty new to eating fish. Also, warning as the Luidaeg likes strong flavors. I also don't have recipes cause I am working from imagination.

Wasabi Tuna chowder (The only non-dairy chowder she makes because Wasabi and Dairy is gross).
Corn and Salmon Chowder.
Frutti di Mare stew. (Like the pasta dish but as a stew. Not sure if there is pasta in it.)
Kelp Forest Stew (Sea weed, abalone, crab, and trout)
Crab gumbo (she only makes this after November when crab season starts)

October Daye canon does mention some odd sandwich combinations. I remember in I think One Salt Sea, Marcia makes chicken and strawberry jam sandwiches. I've always read that as Fae are happy with unusual combinations and its one of their weird things.

There are official True Blood cookbooks (Southern fare and bar food) and cocktail recipes, but since I'm not into mixed drinks or lots of alcohol in general, I've never tried them. But the first time I had Pam bartend, I used some of the actual punny cocktail names, and described how to whip up a True Death.

When TruBlood was actually available as a drink (I think it was a dark red orange-y soda -- seriously, this show had the best merchandise), it was used in lots of cocktail recipes online.

And to answer some other of your questions: Pam hates the fake blood she gets from bar and tolerates the blood in the fridge, but she does appreciate the humans she can drink from. I think her favorite drink is Jemma.

Well, Tegid probably eats simple fair, not as spicy as modern taste, and well he is a big reason I started to try out mead and eventually beer. I mean beer is amazing. Also, my love of hazelnuts comes from this nerd. Tegid had discovered chocolate and potatoes. He love the things, just ask anyone who has ever threaded with him.

I haven't tried anything from any of my canon, well aside from the Ramen shops around town. OMG ramen not from a package is so good.

I have recently started to delve into some historic cooking. I think that the Sudrland Vikings have helped in this a lot. So far I have ended up making the bacon apple thing I found on another Viking re-enactor's site. I am going to try some breads and such over the interm. Also, cooking in clay pots is fun. I need to start doing that more often.

So this isn't from any of my characters' canons, because they are all mostly useless when it comes to food, but given how often I think about apping someone from The Scorpio Races, I'm sticking it here anyway. They look delicious, and I keep meaning to make them.

Maggie Stiefvater's November Cakes from The Scorpio Races, one of my favorite books. Read it and you will drool over every November cake mention, too!

I love playing with the line from Winter Soldier about the food being better; so Steve watches a lot of the Food Network (superheroing is a lot of hurry up and wait) and tries out dishes on Orpheus. Plus, that metabolism, yo.

Thanks to years of bartending, I know how to make cocktails I will never drink.

And then there's Ianto and coffee. I think thanks to Ianto I have been more adventurous with coffee than I ever dreamed, and have learned I actually do like it with cream and nothing else. Really good coffee needs no doctoring.

Most of my characters are never shown eating or rarely shown eating (or in Sadie's case, lives on a diet of alcohol and more alcohol) so I just try to find food that makes sense in their worlds.

Super late, but:

Tavi will shortly be delighted over anything that isn't wax. No, really.

Lois canonically is a coffee addict, drinks a lot (she is the reason the only time I was looking to get drunk I settled on tequila shots as the method), and has a thing for maple donuts. Also kind of pastries in general--she likes bear claws, although I think that has as much to do with the name as anything-but maple donuts, man.

I'm late but I WANNA DO THIS because fandom cookbooks are a weakness of mine. Mostly because I love food and trying new recipes. I bought a Harry Potter cookbook (treacle tart and French onion soup, it was pretty awesome) and a Hunger Games cookbook (lamb stew, though I kind of wanted to try the recipes for squirrel and rabbit). And I will probably end up buying that Hannibal cookbook >__> I used Janice Poon's recipe to make lomo saltado and stole the prosciutto roses (but I put them on cantaloupe instead of watermelon because whatever Hannibal), but used a recipe I already had for osso buco. These included such adventures as watching the show and being disturbed to see my grocery list, and:

My friend, after we couldn't get veal shank at the first store we tried: Maybe we could kill someone and –
Me: Stop it.

And also I'm pretty sure at some point me telling my friend to slice the ginger.

... and this really has nothing to do with my characters, I just like cooking. I'd totally love an Avatar cookbook, someone should really get on that. (Someone has!!!)
