Thursday DE

I was going to ask if people had exciting Halloween plans for their characters--but then I realized that y'all might want to surprise everyone with your spooky and/or hilarious costumes. So share if you want to, or kick ideas around, but if that's not your cup of tea--

Dead people are Halloweeny, right? So does your character have a particular favorite historical figure? Presumably from their universe, but hey, it's Milliways, no need to be provincial.

Mark is a big fan of Johnny Armstrong, hero of World War II. Armstrong is also known as SuperPatriot, and is the Image Universe's equivalent of Captain America.

I totally haven't thought about it. Weird.

Yes, in addition to the Halloween dress-up shenanigans, there are always the conversations with dead people as the quieter part. I should think for something for Ragnar -- he should talk to some of his friends who didn't survive his rise to power in his canon so far. Erik, Leif and Arne, for example...

I'm tempted to have Leif come to Athelstan, as well.

We'll have to change over during Halloween weekend, then, so each of them gets a shot at such a conversation. You could do yours on Halloween proper, Athelstan then leaves pondering it, and Ragnar comes in and runs into Leif where Athelstan 'left' him, and the other two join in?

That would work!

And would you like to play Leif for me?

Oh yes, of course I would! I'll put him on the NPC journal, and we can get started on that OOM tonight?

Yes! I was just thinking that we hadn't had the Here's What Conversations With Dead People Is post yet this year, and wondering if I should do one.

I know I'm planning to play around with that and with costumes, both, with the usual caveats about seeing what I have time for.

Excellent idea - we do have a few new muns, so that would be tremendously helpful.

Well, the Luidaeg is having her fun. I hadn't any other plans until I saw Maru's mention of conversations with dead people and I might see if Rollo won't have a talk with Arne; because I am mean.

As to historical figures, Sam wishes he were as awesome as Harriet Tubman. Can't think of any others.

I'm not sure if Rae has a favorite historical figure, unless legendary princesses count (Lady Aerin). She is kind of fond of a recent historical figure, Jasmin Aziz, the famous code-breaker of the Voodoo Wars who saved Michigan, Chippewa and most of southern Ontario from becoming the largest smoking hole in the planet. She was known to be formidable even before she was a war hero, earning the nickname Mother Durga, "she who is difficult to approach."

There's a national holiday each year in her honor.

...Wait. Is Rae from Damar universe?
sunbaked_baker: (blazing smile)

[personal profile] sunbaked_baker 2015-10-29 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, probably not. Some of McKinley's non-Damar books reference Damar (the one I remember most vividly is Spindle's End). Aerin being exactly the kind of heroine that story-collector Sunshine would love to tell stories about, I millicanoned that Rae had heard the stories of Lady Aerin Firehair, when she was a child.

Enjolras: ...I mean, do I need to break out the list? I can break out the long but incomplete list! But I have no idea which one I would pick as his favorite. I could probably come up with a short list, but it'd require tugging on the sleeves of people who know the French Revolution better than I do (HI JANE HOW ARE YOU) and hissing urgently who am I forgetting who doesn't crop up in Anglophone histories much??

Cosette... oh geez. Huh. She probably has a favorite saint or three. I'll say Saint Francis of Assisi is one she'd like a lot, although she isn't in any rush to pattern her life after his or anything.

Thor complicates this question by being hundreds of years old and with Asgardian history very vague (especially in movieverse.) Well, there are a bunch of epic warrior types he'd get along with! Gilgamesh and Rostam are both solidly before his time, so I'll toss a coin and pick them, but I wouldn't say they're his favorites or anything.

Kazul is also from a world without much canonical history, but I'm sure she has a few favorite scholars... aaaand a favorite historical figure who ended a long war by marching up to the main leaders and banging their heads together until everybody agreed to shape up and negotiate, or something.

Relatively recent history for him, but Hotspur probably thinks Edward the Black Prince is badass, though I admit I don't know enough about him to say for sure. But then again, Hotspur probably didn't pay much attention to history lessons. I'd be tempted to have him talk to some dead people, but he's probably had enough death-related woe lately. And, uh, there are sillier things happening.

Viola is definitely somehow going to end up in a dress for Halloween. And seems like she'd be a Joan of Arc fan.

Lois: Nellie Bly.

Evelyn: Historical figure within her livftime, but she is trying not to let on that it is kind of secretly Ysalwen, because stopped the Fifth Blight and also a mage which is pretty cool considering how the world can be about them. She is having trouble not going all tongue-tied around Ysalwen and trying to hide it.

Tavi: Oooof. Hard! Especially since we have so little history and somehow the first Gaius Primus just isn't, despite his accomplishments. He isn't actually a huge fan of the Roman ones he's learned about in-Bar; he's fascinated and excited, but they're often terrible people. Of Alerans, I think the most recent Gaius Primus was after book one through start of book four, because that's my headcanon's Emperor Claudius analogue (except with a better ending) and Tavi is a fan of First Lords who are historians. Probably still is, but it's more awkward now with the descendant bit.

If Magnus weren't a personal friend, teacher, semi-spymaster, and during Tavi's lifetime, he probably would have been for the research-into-Romans thing.

If Tavi'd learned about Septimus sooner (the murder, political opinions, all of it), I expect he would have ranked and come closer to being a hero to Tavi than anyone else. By the time he does, Tavi's outgrown the latter and will do more than the former himself (which Septimus never got around to anyway).
