Hawke's sense of humour is just a constant barrage of jokes. Always. Regardless of context (it's possible to have a purple Hawke make jokes about boneless women flopping through the streets while telling someone that he's found the skeletons of some missing women, or to joke about someone's dead son minutes after said son has died).
Sarcastic, absurd, facetious, in-jokes, it doesn't matter, but he's deeply uncomfortable with social interaction that doesn't involve humour, and he has no idea how to navigate serious or earnest discussion. It also helps to conceal the fact that he is a perpetual motion machine of rage, so that's also quite nice.
Yamato has quite a dry, often quite acerbic sense of humour. This is magnified by the fact that he's a somewhat abrasive and socially awkward person anyway, but it's also kind of true of all the Chosen Children - they're all pretty sarcastic, and they all like mocking each other.
Gabumon can also be quite cutting, when he wants to be, but most of his humour comes from him either playing up how innocent he is, or from being genuinely quite gormless at times.
Sherral isn't much of a joker, and when he does make jokes, it often comes from being very deadpan or sarcastic. He's definitely the most serious one of my bunch, but he has his moments.
Yugo is a massive troll and makes jokes primarily via a combination of mocking people around him and through playing up his own endless supply of enthusiasm and cheerfulness.
This one is proving more challenging for me than I thought.
Quinlan has a pretty good sense of humor and it tends towards warm. He mostly finds situations amusing than making jokes. He's not above pointing out the humor once it happens. He's also good at laughing at himself.
Rollo has a definite sense of humor and tends towards the immature. What we would call slap stick, crude, or sexual. He does enjoy a witty pun or humorous riddle however.
Ahsoka's humor might be labeled as "snipy" if one wished. She likes poking fun at people who try to shut her down and has no issue with telling funny stories about things people of higher rank have done. I can't decide if the ribbing would stop once she respected you or if it'd just become more focused and honest. I think she also uses humor when she is feeling nervous.
Hotspur, uh. Doesn't have much of a sense of humor. Well, he does, but he has to be so completely assured of his standing with the other person in order for him to go along with any kind of joking (or even, gasp, joke himself) that it almost never shows.
...and really all the rest divide into two groups, wow, I'm original. The ladies all roll with some form of low-level snark, on a scale from the fairly caustic (Liz) to the mostly sweet (Viola). And the gentlemen are in the 'too shy and awkward to make jokes but can probably roll with it if they're sure you're not making fun of them' camp.
Apparently he was "looking for any excuse to laugh uproariously" that time he went to the theater with Courfeyrac, so... I guess? When he's sufficiently giddy with ~love~?
Actually, though-- I see him as similar to Hotspur, in that respect, actually? If he's in a position where he's absolutely certain the other person isn't mocking him, he can go along with some gentle joking (like he seems able to do with Cosette and... possibly literally no one else).
Yeah, it's definitely canonical that he and Cosette later have "lolol remember that time you thought my name was Ursula for like two months?" gigglefests. So clearly he's capable!
I agree with you that he just has to be comfortable enough with the other person to roll with gentle teasing and joking around... and that it's REALLY DIFFICULT AND RARE for Marius to be comfortable with other people, because, uh, Marius.
Well, most of my pups use sarcasm. I have noticed this. Daniel uses sarcasm a lot. So does Vala. Wil, just sarcasms it up, I also have a feeling he's also got a love of slapstick and dark humor.
Death's humor is very dry and usually fairly dark.
Tass, ya know, I think he's more slapstick than even Naruto. And speaking of Naruto, he's a 13 year old boy, enough said.
The Count, likes gallows humor the most, and dark humor, and well, he's a bit of a moron.
Tegid probably falls into a similar humor situation as Wil.
Now that I think about it, they all share something of my since of humor. Go figure. You know it is bad when you make a Manson Family joke during dinner out with your parents and they think its hilarious.
Gene is the king of the brilliant one-liner. He is chock full of amazing lines, though most of them are probably UK-and-era specific. His humour is based on irreverence, taking the piss out of everyone around him, and generally not taking anything too seriously.
Javert, amazingly, actually does possess a sense of humour, or did when he was happy in life and his situation. It's dry, and smug and generally comes out when he's feeling superior.
Valjean is too sad to ever make jokes. :(
Both the Bruces are more of a dry wit than anything. They both tend towards the serious for the most part.
Courfeyrac can be irreverent, generally silly, snarky and also pun-tastic. Smart humour or dick jokes, he's just about a good time.
Pearly is not funny, but thinks he is. People always laugh when he attempts a joke because they might get killed if they don't.
Moriarty has that kind of humour that implies it's a) at your expense, and b) you'll ever get it anyway.
Aubrey is a happy sort, who cheerfully mixes up sayings idioms and then laughs along with the people laughing at him. Not a sophisticated wit at all. He likes bawdy jokes and things that would never do in society, but make him a popular shipmate.
As an entertainer, Emcee's sense of humor transcends all levels, from wit to sarcasm to puns to slapstick. He usually can come up a good one-liner. He can be silly in a childlike way (most recently with Jay). And he does enjoy the sexual punning with Eric and Dixie, among others. I also think he likes antagonizing people who don't like him just so he can make fun of them (Pearce Harman as Javert comes to mind). It's what he would do onstage at the Kit Kat Klub as well, taking down hecklers to amuse himself and the rest of the audience.
Meanwhile, Pam is just pure unfiltered sarcasm. She doesn't care if she hurts your feelings. Usually that's the point. Eric finds her hilarious.
Raven thinks everything is funny. Especially evil. He's the type for pranks and obnoxious word games, though, as his most frequent resort.
X-23 has a terrible sense of humor. She learned it from Duo. Bad jokes delivered in a deadpan are her stock in trade. Esp if she can disguise them as being completely sincere. Sincere jokes. Yes.
Ysalwen loves laughing and making other people laugh. A lot. Self-deprecating humor a bit, ridiculous exaggeration, and cheerful teasing are her go-to techniques.
Canon isn't real clear on this, but there are hints that Amascut is a fan of double entendre. If the Evil Karaoke Machine grabbed her and made her sing Taste You by Melissa Auf Der Maur or Fingertips by Poe there is no doubt that she would immediately get the subtext. But she is mostly srs bsns. She is not a comedian; comedy happens to her due to her foibles.
Fairy Fixit only has a couple of lines of dialog, so I don't quite know yet.
Joly is a horribly morbid little nerd, really--his sense of humor tends to a lot of graveyard-whistling. He tries to keep it somewhat low-key with casual acquaintances, but when he's comfortable with people they are gonna hear all about how that bump on the head is totally going to turn into a tumor:D. It's funny because it's waaay too horrible, the odds are really against it! That's funny, right? ...Med school has done things to him, okay. Besides that, he goes in for terrible, terrible puns and wordplay and, of course, Cat Jokes. Cats are always good.
Bahorel tends to go for absurdist humor, whether it's non-sequitur or grotesque exaggeration, though with the caveat that what he thinks is absurd isn't going to seem so to everyone or even most people (it's okay, he's always in on his own jokes). As far as he's concerned, Monty Python and Douglas Adams count with Byron and Mary Shelley as redeeming factors for England's existence. Macabre jokes and things like horror-comedy are totally to his taste, too.
And of course they both adore puns. I think you can't even be in a room with Hugo novels if you don't have some appreciation for puns.
Enjolras goes in for very dry, gentle wryness, or for occasional really dumb puns. Like, stereotypical dad-joke puns. He's not really good at better puns, or more wholehearted joking around.
Cosette likes teasing people! Very gently. She likes a certain amount of gentle silliness and even absurdity, though she's better at laughing at the latter than coming out with it. Wordplay is the same -- she laughs at it, but doesn't produce it much, and she doesn't hang out in circles that do the kind of really layered quick-witted wordplay that some other characters in her canon do.
Thor likes pranks and wry friendly jokes and good-natured insult humor. (But only when it's good-natured, which is why it only comes out with people he's comfortable with, especially given the power differentials that can exist.) Also, physical humor. Thor has a certain appreciation for slapstick, it must be said.
Kazul likes sarcasm. Sometimes she likes puns and wordplay, but it's a fine line between her finding them clever and her thinking you're too impressed with your own cleverness and thus she ought not to encourage you.
