Point of interest regarding lightsaber quality: according to I, Jedi, lightsaber construction involves meditating with the thing for some period of time in order to fuse the parts together. If you are using the proper Jedi-approved method, you meditate with it full-time for something like a month. If you need an emergency lightsaber or you're an impatient Dark Side kind of person, you can get away with just a couple of days of meditation but the lightsaber won't be as good.
If this still holds true it explains why Kylo Ren's lightsaber is a jalopy and Anakin's old lightsaber is, as you put it, a Ferrari.
Very interesting and a book I need to track down. Part of Kylo's lightsaber issues is the fact his crystal is cracked; which is also why he has the cross guards. They're actually vents to help contain the plasma and not overload the whole system.
I know from the Tales of Jedi comics that the right crystal is an important consideration and good ones are hard to find. Especially because they are (or were) also hot commodities on the black market.
I, Jedi is interesting for many reasons, partly because it provides the best explanation I know of regarding the mechanics of how Force powers actually work. So I highly recommend tracking it down.
