DE: What is good in life?

What are some of your pup's favorite sounds?

This is a good one!

Seimei likes music played on the kin no koto or traditional Japanese flutes, mostly because he respects the skill required to play the former and he associates the later with his best friend.

Most of the sounds he likes are natural ones, such as:

  • The drumming of rain on the roof

  • The noises of insects and frogs on a summer night

  • A sudden breeze kicking up, rustling the leaves

  • The soft hiss of snow falling on snow

  • The combination of a burbling stream/brook and singing birds

Kirk loves the sound of a starship's engines surrounding him.

Knox cannot get enough of the ambient noise of a newsroom at any newspaper (and misses the clacking of typewriters).

Charlie digs total silence except for his heartbeat.

Cy likes to sit on the roof of the Titans Tower and listen to the bay.

Swamp Thing likes the sounds of the city on the occasions he can get out of the swamps. (The ambient noises of the swamp are getting dull.)

Feuilly started out as a country boy, but really he's a city guy now, and he loves the sounds he associates with Paris: people talking all around in different accents, carts coming and going, street vendors, workshop noises. That said, he's really getting into being able to listen to music while he works.

Lesgle loves the sound of a party or a busy café, especially if it's filled with his friends. He loves being in the middle of three conversations at once, and then hearing Jean Prouvaire or Courfeyrac pipe up across the room in the middle of their conversations. He also loves the creaking and talking and horse-noises of a Paris omnibus.

Hal hasn't really gotten to the point yet where he loves the sounds of an army camp, but he will. For now, hey, he likes the hum of a busy bar, he likes to hear people singing drinking songs, he likes to hear street performers. He's also finding that he loves the shipboard noises on the passage across the Channel.

Djehuty likes hymns and prayers. Those and music and birdsong make him very happy. But if you were to just hang out and read off an endless list of, say, prime numbers? That would be delightful too. Perhaps you could read him some technical specs, say, the measurements of all the blocks used in one of the pyramids? Or the dates of the equinoxes and solstices for the past thousand years and the next thousand? That's lovely, so soothing. Thank you! You are so kind!

Enjolras is another of the Paris crowd who loves the background noise of his city: the hum of voices, the rattle of hooves and cartwheels over cobblestones, street vendors, work going on, etc. He's especially fond of this overlaid with the background noise of a café full of his friends having ten overlapping conversations. It took him a long time to get used to the background silence of his Milliways room, and to not feel twitchy about it trying to get to sleep, and he'd still readjust back in a heartbeat.

Cosette likes the city noise fine, but she doesn't love it the same way. She loves birdsong, and rippling water, and the general sounds of a garden being peaceful and in bloom. She's never heard the sea, but she'd love it; she likes the sound of the Milliways lake waves lapping at the shore. And, of course, the voices of her loved ones.

Thor likes laughter and the sounds of people having a good time! Also, the absolute silence of outer space or Bifrost transit. And the sounds of a storm happening all around him: the wind, the pounding rain, the crack of thunder. The sound of a fight isn't bad either.

Kazul likes the quiet of a comfy cave with the kettle brewing for tea. Also, the wind whistling across mountaintops. Also, very high or very deep pure tones, not too loud -- like a glass harmonica played well, something like that.

Combeferre likes the nonverbal background noise of Paris and the background noise of rustling pages in a library. Unlike some of his friends, he is not such a fan of the sound of chatter he himself isn't participating in, as words tend to distract him from his own thoughts or work. Same goes for background music unless it has no lyrics or melody.

Jehan Prouvaire loves melodic, lilting, melancholy music with beautiful lyrics; raw passionate music; the sound of a crowd that's excited about something; and the quiet country sounds of birds, insects, and water. Also poetry being recited. Even if it's bad poetry. Or even if it's good poetry but the speaker would never think to call it that(looking at you, Enjolras).

Brienne loves the voices and lutes of skilled minstrels, the songs of septas and septons, and the clang of practice weapons against each other in sparring/training.

Fantine loves background chatter that she can just sort of absorb without saying anything. She also loves city noises, dance music (usually played on a fiddle), and birdsong. The skylark Cosette gave her as a present is of course her favorite.
