And to get the ball rolling... Wings of Desire. Make sure you see the original Franko-German film and not the American remake. Starts with angels contemplating humans in a library and then there's a circus, Peter Falk being suspiciously Columbo-like, Nick Cave, and a wonder love story.
Robotech. I'm mostly thinking the original TV series here and I would suggest Macross, except I haven't watched it yet. Think the recent Battle Star Galactic but PG and with aliens instead of Cylons. This was the first animated series I ever saw that actually features character deaths that had emotional weight. Kind of a beast though with some 40+ episodes.
More later maybe. I've got to sign off for a family walk.
Oh wow, Wings of Desire sounds amazing. I didn't even read the full summary on the wiki page and already I need to see it. I'm a sucker for angels (or fallen ones) on earth themes.
I also wanted to suggest The Cook, the Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover. trailer here. A great tale which is very suggestive of the Garden of Eden, with a younger Helen Mirren. (TW/CW: for non-graphic suggestion of cannibalism and violence.)
It sounded very beautiful from the description! The book was called The Condition of Postmodernity by David Harvey and it's...as dry as it sounds. But there was a chapter that talked about two movies and Wings of Desire was one of them and it sounded really cool.
I greatly enjoyed the David Harvey! It was dry but I like dry, and very interesting. And I did nooot get to watch Wings of Desire when I read it either, boo.
The entire output of the legendary crime novelist Donald Westlake. Under his name he perfected the comic caper novel, especially the tales of John Dortmunder. Under the name Richard Stark, he created one of the most enduring badass crooks of all time, Parker. Many of these books are out of print, but many more are in print or e-books again.
Much enjoying the Honor Harrington series by David Weber at the moment. Space Navy stories centred around a very relatable female lead. I'm up to book ten and in no hurry to put them down.

...I will stop before this turns into screeching about David Harvey instead of Wings of Desire.
