So assuming there is a Milliways film fest, and your pup is given the choice to hear the dialogue/singing in their native language or to have subtitles in the same, which would they prefer?

All of mine (Yrael, Sunshine, and Zelgadiss) would definitely prefer subtitles. They would want to hear the original voices, the original words and inflections as the actors said them.

Seimei strongly prefers subtitles, but he's okay with well-executed dubs of animated films.

Both of mine would prefer subtitles.

Mary is perfectly capable of reading, thank you. She'd like to note that if the film is in French she does not require subtitles.

Stiles would lean toward dubbed because often it's hard to focus 100% on watching the screen without fiddling with something else, but at other time a movie or show can make him completely narrow his focus, in which case subs would be preferable so he can experience the original.

May isn't sure she even has a native language? It really doesn't matter. All language options have the possibility of greatness.

Carol is really weirded out when the characters mouths move at different speeds than the dialogue, so... subbed.

The Tracksuits prefer dubbed, bro.

All of mine would prefer their native language, with the possible exception of Liz. They're all from pre-film days, so they've got enough to get used to with figuring out the unique pacing and storytelling tricks of film-- much less films from a culture different from their own-- without adding trying to balance reading and watching into the mix.

Gringoire would rather just have it dubbed; he'd rather focus on really looking at the visuals (and judging the scenery and architecture. SO judgey.)

Joly would rather have it dubbed too. If he's watching a program that is Not Science, he goes in intending to turn his analytical thinking Off, and reading makes that harder for him.

Bahorel definitely wants subtitles. Especially for singing! He likes to hear the rhythm of languages, and match the vocal emotions with other forms of expression, even if he doesn't understand the actual words. Plus, subtitles mean a translation, so he can talk/argue about that with other people who enjoy arguing about shows later. The best!

DaH mu'tlheghvam vIqelnIS? *

Feuilly wants subtitles! Heck, he wants to see the subtitles for all the languages! He'll just be over here rewinding and replaying bits over and over again to catch what it sounds like it the native language and trying to match them up with the translation.

Ursula, Djehuty, and the Acme Chief are also in the subtitles camp, but the others would be happy to hear the movie in their own languages courtesy of the Milliways translation magic.

*...yeah i had to look it up, i didn't know that off the top of my head

Enjolras doesn't really have a preference. I mean, he'd find dubbed easier, but he doesn't have an artistic preference and it's not anything he's thought about, so he'd probably look to one of his friends to see if they cared. If Feuilly is around, he'll look to Feuilly, as the one who will weigh in not based on artistic considerations but on the basis of WHAT'S THE BEST WAY TO APPRECIATE EACH PEOPLE'S TRUTH SPOKEN IN THE TONGUE OF THEIR NATION, which is why he will end up watching it with subtitles after (or simultaneously with) listening to a long and heartfelt speech about the importance of language to national identity. He will definitely appreciate it more that way, though, so that's okay.

Cosette would like it dubbed please. Parsing subtitles -- heck, parsing film, and its visual organization -- is an acquired skill, and not one she's had any practice in.

Thor is hearing everything via the Allspeech anyway. So it's all simul-translated! So are the subtitles, so, like, go ahead and add them if they're useful to you, but they're redundant so far as he's concerned. (And he's a more auditory than text-oriented guy anyway, so they won't be helpful with parsing the speech as it flies past unless everybody's really mumbling or staticky.)

Kazul would be fascinated by subtitles, but she'd enjoy them! She wouldn't really have a strong preference, but if she had to pick (or if everybody else was dithering back and forth) she'd pick subtitles, partly to hear the original voices and partly for the novelty factor.

Emcee would prefer subtitles, unless the movie is in any of the languages that he speaks fluently, then they're not necessary.

Floki wants dubbed because...can modern speech even be translated into runes?

Pam also wants dubbed cause she ain't got time for reading what's on the screen.

Sariel would probably pick subtitles. Universal translators are wonderful and vital, but sometimes it's important, and more than important, to hear something in the language it was written in. She's a minority language-speaker and proud of it; the above importance is self-evident, to her. Besides, trying to compare translated text to spoken dialogue really adds something.

The exception is if there's a reeeeally good patois dub around. :) An English one won't tempt her, but a proper kweyol one will.
