DE: Space Age Wiz Kids

So we talk a lot about our pups here. Today, let's turn the lens to ourselves. What sort of video games do you enjoy playing the most? I'm thinking type of play rather than actual titles. If you don't play any, perhaps describe what you would play if it existed or you had the time/equipment/whatever.

I tend to play very simple quick games like Bejewled and Tetris. Have neither the patience nor the skill for much else. I wish I were better at sports games. And I hate first person shooters with a calm pacifistic passion.

My tastes have generally run towards RPGs or action RPGs, although I haven't been playing those much lately. I still play a lot of what I like to call "build/manage" games. Anything where you build stuff and then unlock some stuff to build more stuff to unlock yet more stuff is appealing to me. I also like some time management games.

Some of my favorite games of the "build/manage" type are Kairosoft games for the iPhone and Android. They are a lot deeper and more complex than they appear at first blush. I'm such a geek that I've actually developed spreadsheets to track things such as which combos work, who's gotten what training/upgrades, the optimal layout for my hot springs inn, etc.

I hardly play any at all these days, but I used to love long RPGs like Zelda, and Mario, and whatever. Also shooters - nothing will beat Goldeneye for losing a weekend with your mates, blowing shit up - and I have most of the Resident Evil and Medal of Honour/Call of Duty games that have been released for the PS3. If I play at all these days it's those, because long games without chapters require time investment, and I can't do it.

Minecraft is the ultimate timesink though. I truly regret buying it for my kid last October, because I haven't stopped playing it myself since. Not helpful that it comes on every device imaginable, and is completely addictive and al;fjkfd hatehatelovehate.

ETA: Racing games too! I love Burnout Paradise, and I always used to have a ton for my N64 back in the day. Also, snowboarding. SSX Tricky + sequels have always been amazeballs. I've never enjoyed football games like FIFA though, not sure why.

I get really obsessed with games on my tablet for like, a month or so, and then I stop playing them. Such games have included forms of Bejeweled and Tetris, pinball, Candy Crush, Sims FreePlay (I actually loved this until it was changed in which your Sims died and you had no control over that except to start paying for extra features and your quests couldn't advance unless they died and my Sims had STORIES man, so no). Oh yes, and Farmville.

I would actually like to play real video games like Mafia and L.A. Noire. Because those themes are my jam.

I really enjoy RPGs, with heavy involvement in the story and character/world-building (grew up with all the Final Fantasies, Spyro the Dragon, Legend of Zelda, Okami, etc.), and also less linear, freeroaming sandbox types (Spore, Flower, Minecraft). I'm not good at shooters, and generally the types of characters one encounters in them frustrate me. I also have a weakness for casual games like Bejeweled, Sushi Cat, and Sims, though I tend to go on once- or twice-a-year binges of those games and then don't play them again for a long time.

Match 3s, my current favorite if Sugar Smash, I'm hooked on Neko Atsume. I love time management and hidden object games and also play Angry Birds on my phone. Emily's Delicious and Diner Dash games are my favorite time management ones. Hidden Object, I like the ones with an actual story to them and a challenge.

I suck at fighting games but have fond memories of playing Super Smash Brothers and I'm curious about all these RPG video games, but I've never had a console.

I loved Fallout 3 & New Vegas, and legit, Skyrim may have saved my life. I'm currently in Fallout 4 and Elder Scrolls Online, which is different than Skyrim, but still beautiful and still rich in lore. And I installed Stardew Valley, but I still need to play that. It's so CUTE, I can't handle it.

ETA: Also, hi this is Flynn aka Dejah-mun. Meet my new pup Rita!

Oh man oh man this question thank you so much.

OKAY! I generally cannot play platformers, I get super-stressed out. There has been an exception or two to this. I love watching them, but actually playing them causes literal panic attacks when I get too involved. Strategy games also tend not to be my thing, or Pokemon or similar games. I also really don't do fighting games like Mortal Kombat.

I love love love RPGs and third person games (Zelda, Kingdom Hearts, Arkham series), along with the very rare first person one. Mostly those are shooters, though, and I really tend not to like those. I did start Fallout 4 and mean to finish it, but that's entirely so I can burn down the Institute as a form of catharsis so I never am tempted to do so in real life. (Ratchet and Clank also does not count as a shooter although it is literally nothing but shooting. Too cartoony to count.) RPG wise, I do both JRPG and Western; obviously Dragon Age is a favorite stop, and I do both turn-based and field-based JRPGs (Tales series is great, and I actually tend to get antsy about games where you actually have to choose character's class because I get indecisive). I like puzzle games, and apparently like this really stupid game on my phone called Paradise Bay and I cannot stop.

And give me a LEGO game any time you want, I will probably devour it even if I don't like the particular instance as much.

... i - i might like games. i'm going to hide behind a controller now.
