Before we get to Happy Hours for this week, I'd like to talk to everyone regarding

Dreamwidth gives us a total allotment of 2000 tags, and at the moment we're utilizing 1989 of them.
As our procedure currently stands, little used tags by characters no longer in the game are recycled to be used by people newly requesting a tag.

What I'm proposing is a full on purge of tags for characters no longer in game.
Basically, if a character isn't on the Cast List, they don't get a tag.
This would not only clear out our tag inventory, but it would also mean that new characters would get a fresh new tag of their own, and not one that comes complete with someone else's baggage.

This notion does come at a cost, however: heavy Metadata loss.
I realize that the loss of metadata is...heart-rendering to say the absolute least, but we're dealing with finite resources here.

There'll be a thread starter below for thoughts and comments.
Lemme know what you lot are thinking.

(At some point there'll be a discussion regarding Plot Tags as well, but let's concentrate on Characters for the time being.)

Regarding Character Tags.

What if we set up an archive journal? A list can be created of those tags that are going to be deleted, and volunteers can go through and collect links to the entries associated with those tags and add them to the archive journal?

Basically, make a new entry for each tag, and that entry could have hyperlinks to the Milliways entries?

With free accounts being allowed 1000 tags we should have enough to cover all those that are going to be lost for easy reference later.

Lord, I'm sure I'm making no sense, but it's all perfectly clear in my head!

I think this is a good idea and it could also be a way to collect plot tags. I think something along this line was discussed for plots in another tagging post and if there was one for plots and one for characters or something like that, it would be so useful. I would happily provided my time to comb the archives and make sure we don't lose anything.

I think the archive mentioned above is a good idea. Just wanted to chip in that when looking for a specific thread of your own, I can usually find it on gmail using quotes and or ANDs. (e.g. last night I was able to use 'Vyvyan AND Urquhart' to pull up all their threads and found the one I was after in a couple of minutes). Mentioned purely in case anyone didn't know you could put in multiple search terms.

On a similar track, does anybody remember the wiki from way back in the day? It went away because spammers literally overloaded and crashed the database it was on, and until today, I had completely forgotten that I was working on putting up a replacement. Looks like I started working on it right before everything went all upside down for me, which is probably why I forgot about it. But this post reminded me of it, so I went to go hunt it down again.

So, this is only tangentially related. But for those of us who DO have reused tags...

Is there a way to allow us to remove them from our posts that don't actually include our characters?
