Thursday DE: look at your life look at your choices

So, your characters' decision-making: mostly good, or mostly bad?

Jim makes impeccable decisions, thank you. Is he in jail or dead? Has anyone figured out how to catch him? No. Therefore: perfect. (Other people's mileage may vary re: his view on this.)

Gene: a mix of the two, really. His decisions usually (not always) come from the right general place, but he's a bit guns-ho about things and doesn't tend to think things through logically. Tends to make decisions based on what might be the most fun/involve most car chases and fights.

Aubrey: impeccable decisions on water, the very worst on land.

jack aubrey's decision-making on land gives me so much simple pleasure

>_>

You could say that when it comes to making decisions on land, Jack is totally... at sea.

*hides head in shame*

(Though I do love that balance between Jack and Stephen. Jack is a brilliant seaman, but completely lost when making decisions on land. Stephen is brilliant about so many things under the sun and done in shadow, but is completely at sea when faced with nautical terms and... being at sea.)

Just imagine Jim and Wilford in a situation where they get to make decisions together. Something will literally explode lmao

Ellen's reasonably good at decision-making, largely because she has to be or she winds up dead. She's made a few bad calls in the past and I expect she'll continue to do so in the future, but in all fairness, she's younger than most modern American college graduates. That's not a lot of time in which to learn to decide well. (Although 'Would Dad think this is a good idea? Then there is a very good chance I shouldn't do it' has served her well a few times.)

Shephard literally ran down an alien space monster's throat to kill it from the inside. The fact that this worked does not really make it any better of a decision.

Santo is really very good at making decisions, and may have the highest Wisdom score of any of my characters. (Fawkes comes a close second but he's got that supermutant primal rage thing in the background all the time, which colors his judgment calls a bit.)

Quicksilver tends to make his decisions based on 'would I find this entertaining?' more often than not, but as a teenager who moves through time so much faster than other human beings I figure he's mostly developed in isolation; it's only reasonable for him to be making lousy calls. And he does get better over the course of canon, when he's had time to think about his life.

I have a huge soft spot for characters that make really poor choices. I mean, who doesn't? :D

In the department of How Did You Possibly Think THAT Was A Good Idea, I've got Bossuet (who thought it was a good idea because it sounded fun and/or would help someone out), William Douglas (who probably didn't think about it much at all), and Harry Monmouth in his younger days (who thought it was good for a laugh).

The rest of my crew are pretty sensible most of the time. And so is Monmouth when he's acting as king, for the most part, sort of. Although he's mostly making decisions in a framework that I fundamentally disagree with, so looking at his canon and the historical Henry V there's a lot of Wow Fuck You coming from me at his choices.

I'm with you there. I think terrible choices can define a great number of pups I've had over the years. XD

Most of mine make okay decisions mixed in with impressively bad ones.

Will-Fairly good taking into account the factors he's dealing with but he's made some really bad ones.

Quentin-All of his worst ideas are usually part of, Toby needs my help since trouble follows Toby around like a lost puppy.

Charles-For someone as smart as he is, he can do some stupid things, usually in the name of compassion or Erik. Most of the time he is good at being calm and measured to figure out what will actually help.

William-Overall fairly good except when he's trying to prove himself. Canon is full of times when he did something stupid that turned out to be a good decision.

Sameth-Mostly bad throughout canon and after, I still don't understand what's going on with him and Jim. His good decisions tend to be connected to what he's making.

Moist-Oh god no, I mean he's clever in his lying but choosing to become a criminal is never going to end well.

Ivan-Better than Miles, which means it depends, he's good at knowing when to keep his head down and avoid trouble but when it comes, he does what Miles asks. This isn't always a good choice.

Jane-Mostly good, canon shows a moment when she considered something that would have been bad in some ways and good in others.

Demeter-For her family, mostly good, but then the scale of good and bad choices for Greek gods is impressively skewed.

Tumnus-Mainly good except for a few horrible exceptions.

Catastrophically bad. Slenderman was a terrible idea that somehow paid off, though I'm convinced even that got him killed a few times. Every single video after the first two are just "Warfstache's adventures in terrible decision making."

Rollo makes wonderful life choices that drives plot forward very nicely. On personal levels, those decisions are horrible more often than not.

Sabine is getting much better with making good choices but is still learning.

More later maybe.

Yamato: I -- I'm actually not sure. It's kind of an even split of actually quite good choices and catastrophically bad ones, and sometimes the two are melded together. For example, having a private chat with Taichi about why Omegamon's fusion broke down is a good choice on both a logical and emotional level! Except that Yamato chooses to do this by waiting three months and then cornering him in a hallway, snapping at him, and coming this close to accusing Taichi of hating him. This is not a good choice.

Hawke: It's possible to have Hawke either make terrible decisions or terrible decisions that aren't quite as terrible. Generally, he almost never gets a non-terrible option, which is more to do with how much of a blasted hellscape Kirkwall is than anything else. It's probably fair to say that, given the opportunity, Hawke's probably fairly okay at decision-making? I mean, Leandra and Bethany seem to have a pretty good head for making good choices, and there's plenty to suggest that Malcolm did as well (and Carver -- ergh, he could definitely make worse choices), so.

Of course.

Sora springs to mind, for instance. Or Koushiro. Or Takeru. Or anyone else.

[personal profile] angry_friendship_wolf 2016-09-01 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm surprised Sora didn't step in and go 'I'll have the awkward conversation about fusion collapses, if you do it you'll just end up getting shouty and aggressive,' and the only thing I can think of is that Yamato didn't tell her he was going to ask about it.

(Another A++ decision-making moment for Yamato Ishida.)

Well, I will say that Pam is mostly concerned about Eric's poor life choices, and there are many of them. MANY. She'll make it clear to him that she thinks they're stupid, but she'll go along with them anyway and never says 'I told you so' when they go wrong.

Anakin Solo's decision making... Like, in relation to the rest of his family? Or the multiverse in general? Because those are two different answers... To be fair, even overall I'd say mostly good. But compared to his generation (aka grandkids of Anakin Skywalker), kriffing perfect. He's literally the only one (out of five if we combine Legends and Canon) who never turned to the Dark Side. Good job, Anakin jr, high five!

Taichi Yagami's decisions are generally bad. Just ... just about everything. Even food choices. Stop eating your guidance counsellor's baked goods, you degenerate.

Franklin Richards... pretty good, at least for a ten year old. Maybe not dietary-wise if he's left alone too long (cheeseburgers and pop tarts, the meal plan of champions), but on the whole, not bad. (He probably doesn't eat his teachers' baked goods, at least.)

Abe no Seimei's decisions are mostly good, but he cheats (i.e., has divination powers).

YT makes a lot of less-than-prudent choices, but she's a teenager so she has an excuse. Also she is gutsy and resourceful enough to get herself out of most of the trouble she gets into.

Bahorel has no regrets! This clearly means he makes awesome decisions always. (Other people may disagree. He doesn't care, but he respects the right of other people to their Wrong opinions, like he respects his own right to ignore and/or argue with those opinions. His decisions are the best.)

Joly makes pretty reasonable decisions overall, though he prefers to have some time to consider them. He is willing to concede that perhaps some of them he should think about...more. Especially when voltage and/or corrosives are involved.

Gringoire makes the worst decisions always. Just eternally terrible. He would feel bad about it, if he ever spent time re-examining his life, which is one of many reasons why he's absolutely not going to do that, which is probably the main cause of his bad decisions. And so it continues.

I love Bahorel and his decisions, I mean he's just always 100 percent with every one no matter how good or matter. Its amazing.
