DE: Seen, not heard?

In the world where your character comes from, are children supposed to be loud and boisterous, or quiet and well-behaved? Or what else is expected of them?

In Michael's house, children are supposed to be children. He positively encourages games like his second-oldest son running about pretending to be a T-Rex with the youngest (foster) child riding on his back playing Dinosaur Cowgirl.

My mistake, it was no-longer-so-little Harry, the youngest Carpenter, not Matthew - but yeah, it was a lovely scene.

Kids need to be kids, especially if they've been through hard times, supernatural or otherwise.

Children in Vault 101 were expected to be well-mannered and polite, and if they couldn't be well-mannered and polite all around then they were expected to keep their noisy and disrespectful behavior pointed towards other children and respect their elders, dammit. (Bullying could be ignored if it didn't disturb grownups.) Kids got work assignments alongside adults at age ten, but were still considered children for quite some time and were made to stay in school until at least age sixteen. You either got your adult job assignment after that or you got tapped for further academic study and training for later, more detailed jobs. Not sure exactly where they drew the line between 'child' and 'teenager', though.

Children outside Vault 101 mostly get expected to be part of community survival from a very young age. Depends on where they live- there are a few visible children in Megaton and no discernible school, but no specific sign that the kids are doing work. The kids in Andale, um.... Andale is weird and I'm not counting that as representative. There is some indication of education in Rivet City, where things are considered safe and people have 'normal' jobs, but no indication of what the parents consider acceptable from their children. Children in the Brotherhood of Steel are trained up fairly young, including the ten-year-old last direct descendant of Roger Maxson, who's a Squire with a few training missions under his belt (although he's not allowed to go on any more for a while because he accidentally shot one of the older Brotherhood members in the shoulder last time). In New Vegas they have street kids running around chasing giant rat creatures. I can't tell if they're hunting the rats for food or if they're doing it for fun. I know in parts of New Vegas they pay children to stand on street corners and yell advertising slogans. In the Commonwealth, there's a school in Diamond City, complete with a human teacher and a robot assistant- however, not all children go there; the town's water purification plant is operated by a ten year old boy named Sheng Kowalski, who appears to do all the work of the plant unaided. Outside of Diamond City, kids are expected to work, and contribute to family survival.

Tess was not to be seen or heard. And then she was adopted into a place where she wasn't supposed to be at all.

Kylo's father is Han Solo. I think loud and boisterous was a requirement.

Parents expect their kids to be perfect little angels, and may even convince themselves that their kids are. In reality, they tend to be the cause of most problems, whether by being disobedient little brats that run away and make you chase after them, or being posssessed by some demon.

The horror genre is a weird place to live.

Amelia: Juvenile dragons are allowed to be loud and boisterous as long as Bethseba, the Heartstriker matriarch, finds them charming and amusing. When she does not, those children had best not get on her radar. Fortunately, Heartstriker mountain is huge and Bethseba rarely leaves the upper levels. Beyond this, all children are expected to increase Bethseba's power and standing. All Heartstrikers are expected to raise Bethseba's standing and those that don't tend to end up eaten or the like. I do not know if other dragon families are like this but evidence suggests the affirmative.
