Thursday DE

Yyyyyeah, I got nothing good for a DE question. I'm sorry. I'm still numb here too.

But here goes: my kids just got a book called The Battle of the Vegetables, prominently featuring leeks and carrots.

If your characters were vegetables, what vegetables would they be? Fruits are acceptable in a pinch!

And just for the record, Gredya disapproves of vegetables.

Crossing the vegetable/fruit divide (depending on your stance vis a vis appearance and internal edible seeds), Jim is a chili pepper. Small, colourful, and hella burns. Seems innocent at first bite, but you change your mind pretty damn quick.

...Gredya disapproves on principle, but only on principle. If you have to be a vegetable (or fruit), that may be acceptable.

Jim is curious as to what situation would necessitate having to be a vegetable, but is happy for Gredya's approval.

Can't even argue with that.

Ye gods, now I am imaging Milliways as Veggie Tales.

I'm imagining a Veggie Tales-themed plot. For three days, everyone who walks into the bar room turns into a vegetable.

At least one serial killer is preoccupied with musing on the definition of cannibalism, and any vegetarians are hit with an existential crisis.

Without giving it much thought, Amascut is a prickly pear. Maybe I'll come back after thinking about it more.

Yeah, that's pretty much it for Wilford as well. Or maybe just a straight up saguaro.

Sabine is a beet. I have no idea why aside from the color.

Rollo is something phallic, like a cucumber or summer squash.

Ahsoka seems like some kind of onion; they last forever and make you cry.

Tess is an onion. Has an intimidating reputation and she can make you want to cry.

Random, but this seems like the place for it. Would people be interested in having a friending meme?

I like this! Maybe I'll use it for tomorrow's DE? Sort of a who are you and what do you talk about kind of thing.

Sunshine is garlic. >_>

Aromatic! Versatile! It goes in so many recipes! It wards off vampires....

I'm not sure what vegetable Yrael would be, honestly.

Wasabi comes to mind, but I'm not sure exactly why. Sushi angle maybe?
sunbaked_baker: (Default)

[personal profile] sunbaked_baker 2016-11-10 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Probably! But Yrael also tends to be pretty sharp, is an acquired taste, and one can easily have too much with disasterous and overwhelming effects, so wasabi works! :D:D
bjornwilde: (Default)

[personal profile] bjornwilde 2016-11-10 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Plus it kinda ignores the rules since wasabi is a root not a vegetable.

[personal profile] sunbaked_baker 2016-11-11 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
It is totally a vegetable! Vegetables are just a plant or part of a plant that is edible. Fruits are more specific edible parts of a plant, but roots totally count as vegetables. Look at carrots, onions, and potatoes. Root bodies, and totally vegetables.

I did all sorts of random internet research on which foods traditionally thought of as vegetables are technically fruit, for little!Rae's bit of hesitation and confusion about where to enter her peppers at the milliways county fair this year. She had learned at school that tomatoes were technically fruits, but got a remark about having entered them in the previous years fair as fruits. So she wanted to be sure she was entering the peppers (also technically fruits, but thought of as vegetables, like tomatoes) into the right fair category.

Thor is a sunflower. Very tall, meteorological symbolism, may or may not count as a vegetable depending on your definition but gets along with them. (Okay, the meteorological symbolism is all wrong, but find me a vegetable associated with thunderstorms and I'm willing to change this.)

Cosette is a leek. Very hardy, grows even after repeated frosts, very French, goes with plenty of dishes, closely related to wild things.

Kazul is cinnamon bark, if that counts, or ginger if cinnamon doesn't. Spicy, but in a generally friendly way.

Dr. Dinosaur is a chili pepper which is also on fire.

Enjolras is an angel hair squash.
