Thursday DE: speed dating (or speed hating) edition

You ever feel like it’s hard to meet characters? Hard to find reasons to throw two characters together, and not sure you want to commit to a whole scene? Let’s try speed dating: Comment with your characters below, and people will tag in for a speed date. To simulate the time limit, each conversation can go no longer than 7 tags from each person. Characters who come as a set can absolutely join too, nothing wrong with a three-way or more-way date! (And no, these absolutely do not have to be dating-type conversations. Speed arguing, speed hating, speed friendly chatting, those are good too. Just throw characters at each other.)

This is all off-the-record, of course, not really IC. Unless someone has a character who wants to ICly set this up.

Jim Moriarty, why does that name--

Wait--

"You're a physics guy?" Barry's expression lights with excitement.

Wait, wait--

"Wait, you've been out there? For real?"

'Mmhmm.'

Yeah, we'd say he was looking smug because of the excitement but c'mon, when doesn't Jim look smug?

'Courtesy of X, if you know her. And yes, I'm a physics guy. Among other things.'

"Why would she-- " he starts, then decides the better question is, "How did you survive?"

He's totally going to get back to the physics thing in a moment.

'I survived by sheer force of will, and refusing to let the laws of physics damage me.'

He says this with a completely straight face, no hint at all of bullshit.

...and then smirks, and shakes his head.

'Ask X about the microverse if you want to know the ins and outs. We were very small, and as long as I didn't let go of her hand, I was fine.'

Barry's eyes widen and he's fully willing to accept that explanation until Jim smirks and Barry realizes it's a joke and he laughs, a bit embarrassed.

It isn't that he's fully gullible, but this is Milliways, and well, something like that isn't entirely out of the realm of possible here.

"Microverse, okay." He'll definitely be asking her about that next time they meet. For now, though, Jim still has Barry's interest with the physics thing.

"So are you a scientist, or a professor?" he asks, then offers, "I uh, I majored in physics and chemistry in college, and I work now as a forensic scientist for the police department."

This kid is precious. Jim would quite like to keep him in his pocket, but he'd only forget to feed him after a day or so.

'Oh, it's been a while since I could say I was a true academic. I've rather branched out since my doctorate.'

Academia is soooooo boring, and also doesn't pay enough to keep him in good suits.

'But astrophysics and mathematics was my field, once. It's more of a hobby these days, though I flatter myself I can keep up with developments.'

He could advance them, but why would he? His mind is not for the sharing.

'Why would a bright boy like you choose to work for the police, though? Seems a waste of talent.'

Considering how much Barry eats that would be a bad thing.

"What do you do now?" he asks, curious.

"Astrophysics is an amazing field. Not a lot of people would tackle it as a hobby." Barry is impressed, and pleased to meet a fellow nerd.

The comment about his job though, puts him off just a little, but Barry is easy with his reply. "I really like it. It can be important work, and it gives me a way to help people."

These days he has other, more direct, ways to help people, but he's still glad for the things he can do as a CSI.

NERD HOWDAREYOU WHAT HE IS THE EPITOME OF COOL AND okay yeah absolute nerd

Jim tilts his head at the reply, obviously amused. A way to help people. Precious.

'It's a field I always found interesting, yes. As for what I do now-'

A bell rings out, and Jim pulls a comically heartbroken face.

'-looks like that'll have to wait for our next date, my dear.'

Barry turns his head at the ding, then turns back to Jim with an apologetic look that comes with an easy smile and chuckle.

"Yeah. Well, it was nice meeting you. I hope to catch you around sometime."

He gives Jim a nod then steps away to find the next person to chat with.
